Målet for FUSE er å utvikle kunnskap og metoder for energieffektive og trygge skipsoperasjoner ved å kombinere KI og skips hydrodynamikk som muliggjør raske utslippsreduksjoner fra den globale flåten gjennom neste generasjons ruteoptimalisering.


Hovedideen er å utvikle metoder for mer nøyaktige numeriske modeller for skipsytelse, inkludert både energi- og bevegelsesegenskaper, ved å bruke kunstig intelligens i kombinasjon med klassisk hydrodynamikk. Tradisjonelle hydrodynamiske modeller er basert på grunnprinsipper og reflekterer fysiske lover. Kunstig intelligens kan trenes på operasjonelle data til å finne nye sammenhenger i dataene utover det man vet fra fysikkens lover. Begge tilnærmingene har sine fordeler og ulemper, og vi tar sikte på å kombinere det beste fra begge tilnærmingene og utvikle hybridmodeller. 
Potensielle effekter av de nye skipsmodellene vil evalueres gjennom bruk i ruteplanlegging.

Som utgangspunkt vil vi samle brukerkrav fra industripartnerne med fokus på to utvalgte brukstilfeller; deep sea og fergedrift. Forskningsaktivitetene vil dekke dataanalyse, KI og skipshydrodynamikk og reiseoptimalisering og beslutningsstøtte. Relevante forskningstemaer innebærer å sammenligne de ulike tilnærmingene for å estimere skipsytelse, vurdere nøyaktighet og gyldig bruk av modellene og evaluering av modellenes sensitivitet og anvendelighet. Til slutt vil den potensielle effekten av å bruke hybridmodeller i reiseoptimalisering bli undersøkt og demonstrert. En ph.d.-kandidat vil bli utdannet fra NTNU med fokus på å fusjonere KI med skipshydrodynamikk. 

Prosjektpartnerne er SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Ålesund, NTNU, Torghatten, Vard Electro, NAVTOR og G2 Ocean.

The FUSE vision is to rapidly reduce emissions from the global fleet by unlocking the full potential of operational data through fusing AI and ship hydrodynamics for next generation voyage optimization. The main idea is to develop theoretical approaches and methodology utilizing the potential of using AI in combination with classical hydrodynamics to develop more accurate numerical models for ship performance, including both energy and motion characteristics. Traditional hydrodynamic models are based on first-principle, reflecting physical laws. AI-based models which uses operational data are used to establish a statistical relationship between inputs and outputs. Both approaches have their pros and cons, and we aim to fuse the best of both approaches and develop hybrid models as input to voyage planning and onboard decision support systems.  As a starting point, we will gather user requirements from the industrial partners focusing on two selected use cases; deepsea and ferry operations. The industry partners will be involved during the whole project period ensuring that the competence and results can be exploited into their product and services. The industry partners will contribute with operational data from their ships as research data. 

The research activities will cover data analytics, AI and ship hydrodynamics and voyage optimization and decision support. Research partners are SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Ålesund, and NTNU. A PhD candidate will be educated from the NTNU with supervisors from Marine Technology and Engineering Cybernetics with focus on fusing AI with ship hydrodynamics. Relevant research topics involve comparing the different approaches for estimating ship performance, considering accuracies and valid usage of the models and evaluation of sensitivity and applicability of the models. Finally, the potential impact of using hybrid models in voyage optimization will be investigated and demonstrated.

Fusing AI and Ship Hydrodynamics for Next-Gen Voyage Optimization

I Nordsjøen finnes det organisk rike leirlag som har blitt begravd til flere kilometers dyp. Når slike leirlag blir begravd til flere kilometers dyp, blir de så varme at de begynner å generere olje og gass. Av all oljen og gassen som har blitt generert i Nordsjøen, har hele 98% lekket ut til havet over geologisk tid. Men hvor skjer dette? Hvor mye lekker ut? Hvilke miljøkonsekvenser har det? Hvordan påvirker det planer for CO2-lagring at væsker kan sive ut naturlig noen steder? Og kan det gi ny innsikt i hvor man bør lete etter olje og gass? Dette er spørsmål som InFluSe-prosjektet skal svare på. 

InFluSe står for "Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage". På grunn av de viktige konsekvensene hydrokarbonlekkasje i Nordsjøen har, er det mange som er interessert i dette prosjektet. Prosjektet ledes av Universitetet i Bergen, og har partnere fra industri, akademia og statsadminstrasjon, og disse partnerene inkluderer UiT, Equnior, Vår Energi, AkerBP, Aarhus Universitet, Geomar Kiel, Havforskningsinstituttet og Sokkeldirektoratet. 

I løpet av det første av fire år, skal vi ansette fire PhD-kandidater og gjennomføre et tokt på 20 dager med forskningsskipet G.O. Sars. Den første av PhD-stipendiatene skal bruke satellittdata til å undersøke hvor, når og hvorfor olje lekker i Nordsjøen. Den andre PhDen skal undersøke eksisterende brønn-, kjerne- og seismikk-data fra Nordsjøen for å finne ut hvilke veier hydrokarbonene migrerer under bakken. Den tredje skal samle inn og prosessere nye høy-oppløselige 3D-seismiske data over områder med mye lekkasje for å undersøke hvordan hydrokarbonene kommer seg gjennom takbergartene. Den siste skal undersøke geokjemiske og biologiske prøver fra hydrokarbonoppkommene for å finne ut hvor de kommer fra, hvor lenge de har vert aktive, og hvilke påvirkninger de har på miljøet.

In the Southern Norwegian North Sea (SNNS), analysis of satellite radar data supported by recent scientific cruise activity reveals a previously unknown pattern of natural oil seepage. This seepage pattern indicates the presence of a widespread and previously unknown hydrocarbon migration system. Combined with the extreme availability of subsurface data in the study area and our ability to conduct scientific cruises with state-of-the-art research vessels, the observed seepage pattern makes it possible to characterize and understand migration of fluids in sedimentary basins from source to seep, at a hitherto unparalleled level of detail. Through an integrated and cross-disciplinary research program, the InFluSe project partners will create a complete understanding of hydrocarbon migration and seepage in the SNNS through two scientific cruises, a comprehensive analysis and modelling program, and education of 4 PhDs and >10 MScs in the disciplines of geomatics, subsurface geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Firstly, we will determine the hydrocarbon migration pathways in the SNNS area and develop a baseline of natural hydrocarbon seepage in terms of distribution and rates that past and potential future well-related emissions can be evaluated against. Secondly, improved knowledge about distribution and rates of hydrocarbon seeps in the Norwegian North Sea will make it possible to assess the geological contribution of hydrocarbons, carbon and methane (the most important greenhouse gas after CO2) to the environment and atmosphere, something that is poorly understood from both a conceptual and regional perspective, and may be exacerbated by the shallow depth of seepage here. Thirdly, several CO2 storage licenses are in place in the SNNS and the impact of the observed seepage on the CO2 storage integrity in these areas will be addressed by InFluSe. Finally, understanding of pathways of hydrocarbon migration will help improve play models and de-risk exploration prospects.

Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage

Prosjektet vil bruke avanserte massespektrometriske teknikker for å utvikle testprotokoller som kan redusere usikkerheten i data fra såkalt spesiell kjerneanalyse (SCAL). SCAL er et samlebegrep for visse laboratorietester utført på prøver av reservoarstein (borekjerner) og fluid fra oljereservoaret for å bestemme viktige reservoartekniske egenskaper. Den mest grunnleggende egenskapen på poreskala er hvordan reservoarsteinen fuktes av reservoarfluidene. Dette styrer i stor grad mobiliteten til olje, vann og gass i porerommene og påvirker dermed utvinningsprosessen.

Et ideelt krav for representative og pålitelige SCAL-data er at kjerneprøvene har beholdt sine opprinnelige fuktegenskaper når de leveres til laboratoriet. Det kan være stor usikkerhet knyttet til dette. Vanlig laboratoriepraksis er derfor å rense ut alle reservoarfluider og mulige rester av borevæske fra kjerneprøvene med ulike løsemidler for så å forsøke gjenoppretting av opprinnelige fuktforhold i kjernene ved å mette dem på nytt under kontrollerte forhold med olje produsert fra reservoaret. Om opprinnelige fuktforhold kan gjenopprettes på denne måten skal undersøkes ved å sammenligne den massespektrometriske profilen av oljekomponenter ekstrahert fra poreoverflatene i kjerneprøvene med profilen til olje produsert fra formasjonen. De massespektrometriske teknikkene som skal anvendes tillater bestemmelse av molekylvekt til individuelle oljekomponenter med en oppløsning som er høy nok til å identifisere elementformelen til hver forbindelse i oljen. Sammenligning av komponentprofilene til adsorberte hydrokarboner og mobil olje kan indikere om observerte fukt-egenskaper til en reservoarkjerne representerer opprinnelig reservoarforhold eller er påvirket av hvordan kjernen er behandlet før SCAL-analysen.

Mer pålitelige laboratoriedata vil gi bedre operasjonelle beslutninger, mindre risiko for mislykkede investeringer og bedre sjanser for optimalisering, både med hensyn til utvunnet oljevolum og energibruk.

Special core analysis (SCAL) is a set of laboratory procedures to determine essential reservoir engineering properties like oil displacement, permeability and wettability by conducting various tests on reservoir material. These properties – wettability in particular – are important to assess the resources in place, estimate fluid flow characteristics and in developing optimal strategies for hydrocarbon recovery. More reliable laboratory data will lead to better operational decisions, less risk of failed investments, and better chances of optimization, in regard both to oil volumes recovered and energy expended. Wettability is the most basic rock-fluid interaction at pore level. It largely governs the mobility of reservoir fluids and their distribution in the pore spaces and thereby affects oil recovery processes. A fundamental requirement for representative and reliable SCAL data is that core samples retain their original wettability when delivered to the laboratory or that the original wettability can be restored. It is hypothesized that the most surface-active components in an oil, being minority oil components containing elements such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur, will adsorb on the rock surface and thus determine the wettability. If originally only present in small amounts these components might not be present in the mobile oil, and if they are removed during core preparation (by use of strong solvents) it will not be possible to restore original wettability. The uncertainties of SCAL related to wettability can be reduced by an increased knowledge about the minority oil components. The hypothesis will be tested on representative reservoir rock and fluid samples. Employment of cutting-edge high- and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry techniques will be pivotal to the project. Comparison of the compound profiles of hydrocarbons adsorbed to the pore surfaces and oil produced from the relevant reservoir formation will be a key element of the analysis.

I løpet av de neste tiårene skal det bygges og driftes mange havvindmøller, noe som er viktig for å få til det grønne skiftet. Dette gir mange muligheter for norske verft. Norge er kjent for å være best i verden på design og produksjon av maritimt utstyr, og vi har gode forutsetninger for å lykkes med havvind. Men for å lykkes må verftene bli mer effektive.

Norske verft har tidligere blitt kritisert for å være for dyre og lite produktive. Selv om det går bedre, må de bli enda mer effektive. De må redusere kostnadene med 10-15% for å kunne vinne nye kontrakter og bidra til at havvindindustrien blir lønnsom. Derfor trenger vi mer kunnskap om hvordan verftene kan jobbe smartere.

Digitale tvillinger og kunstig intelligens har vist seg å fungere godt i andre industrier for å redusere kostnader og øke effektiviteten. I verftsindustrien har man hittil mest brukt digitale modeller til produktutvikling. Vi vet lite om hvordan de kan hjelpe med å planlegge arbeidskraft, utstyr og infrastruktur bedre. Med digitale tvillinger og kunstig intelligens kan verftene få bedre data og analyser, som gir mer detaljerte og nøyaktige planer. Dette kan redusere tid brukt på oppgaver som ikke skaper verdi.

Målet med TWinYards-prosjektet er å finne ut hvordan vi kan gjøre norske verft mer effektive ved å bruke digitale tvillinger og kunstig intelligens. Da kan verftene redusere kostnader og bidra til bærekraftig drift og en bærekraftig satsing på havvind.

A high number of offshore wind turbines is expected to be built, installed, operated, and decommissioned over the next decades, constituting a critical element in the green shift. This offers numerous opportunities for the Norwegian yard industry. Norway leads globally in maritime equipment design and production, with unique expertise and infrastructure, providing a solid foundation for success in offshore wind. However, the success relies on more efficient yard operations. The Norwegian yard industry's lack of cost competitiveness and productivity has been stressed previously, and even though there are signs of improvement, their effectiveness should have been much higher. They need to reduce costs by 10-15% to win newbuild orders in the long run and be able to contribute to the cost efficiency improvements required for a profitable offshore wind industry. There is, therefore, an urgent need for increased knowledge on efficient operations of the yards. 

Digital twins and artificial intelligence have been successfully used in manufacturing to reduce costs and improve efficiency. In the yard industry, the use of digital models has primarily been from a product perspective. There is a lack of knowledge on how they can support efficient planning of the people, equipment, and infrastructure at yards. With digital twins and artificial intelligence, yards gain access to robust data and analytical capabilities that provide more detailed and accurate plans and schedules that minimize non-value adding activities, promising a significant reduction in non-value adding time.

The overall objective of TWinYards is to develop knowledge on how to achieve resource efficiency and flow in the Norwegian yard industry by exploiting digital twins and artificial intelligence. The yards will thereby be able to reduce costs and contribute to green yard operations and a sustainable shift towards offshore wind.

TWinYards – Scaling up for offshore wind at Norwegian yards: Efficient operations through digital twins and artificial intelligence

Store skip (over 5000 bruttotonn), som containerskip, bulkskip og tankskip står for ca. 90% av karbondioksidutslippene (CO2) forårsaket av den maritime sektoren i dag. For denne typen fartøy er nullutslippsløsninger, som elektrifisering, ikke lett tilgjengelige. Det er derfor avgjørende å finne andre løsninger for å avkarbonisere dem. En ny teknologi spesielt egnet for store fartøyer, er moderne seil, kalt vindassisterte fremdriftssystemer (WAPS). WAPS har potensial til å redusere drivstofforbruket med opptil 60% og dermed redusere klimagassutslippene betydelig. 
For å realisere og maksimere potensialet til WAPS er det avgjørende å ha en grundig forståelse av de komplekse vindforholdene som oppleves på havet og forstå hvordan WAPS bør brukes for å møte denne utfordringen på en optimal måte. Vindforholdene i skipsfart kan variere betydelig avhengig av ruten (dypt hav, kyst, osv.), men også innenfor samme seilas. WAPS må derfor utformes for å fungere i et bredt spekter av vindforhold. Dette kompliseres ytterligere av bevegelsen indusert av fartøyet. Som en ny teknologi, er den fulle innvirkningen av de dynamiske, realistiske vindforholdene på WAPS ennå ikke fullt ut forstått. 
reSail vil fremme vindassistert fremdrift ved å forbedre forståelsen av vindforholdene som WAPS vil utsettes for. Vindmålinger på skip vil sammen med vindtunnelmålinger og modelleringsarbeid muliggjøre forbedring av kontroll, plassering og implementering for å realisere det fulle drivstoff- og utslisppsbesparende potensialet til WAPS.

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) have the potential to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of international shipping. They are particularly suited for large vessels, which contribute heavily to global emissions from the maritime industry. To maximise the potential of wind-assisted propulsion the wind conditions WAPS are facing and how they affect wind propulsion ships need to be well understood. reSail will address this challenge by generating full-scale measurement data from a demonstrator ship, examining the ideal placement of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) on a ship, developing advanced aerodynamic models and control strategies to make the newly acquired knowledge available to a broad audience and finally assess the implications of complex wind conditions on ship operation. 
This will be obtained by a combination of methods ranging from, field measurements on a sea-going vessel, laboratory scale experiments in tailored flow conditions, to simulations of both individual components, such as the control system, as well as the ship holistically. The project will be conducted by a strong consortium comprised of three research institutions with strong competence in maritime transport, fluid mechanics, control strategies and ship operation, both experimentally and numerically, as well as key industry actors in shipping, wind-assisted propulsion and Geo-data. Close collaboration between the partners and among the different tasks in the project will advance wind-assisted propulsion and thus efficient green shipping in Norway.

Sailing with wind-assisted propulsion in realistic wind conditions

From the SEA to the SOLution. An integrative assessment of marine pollution in a changing Arctic

Marine chemical pollution poses known threats to human health and to biodiversity, ecosystem and societal services. The Arctic is a major sink of global mercury (Hg) pollution. Arctic sediments, sea and glacial ice constitute vast Hg reservoirs. Recent studies raise concerns about their increasing role as local Hg sources. In a rapidly warming Arctic, the consequences of potentially increased environmental Hg on marine biota remain unknown. The objective of SEASOL is to identify the pathway(s) of Hg bioaccumulation in marine food webs of the High Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard). This changing glacial fjord is recognised as a ‘natural laboratory’ of climate change in the Arctic. The fellow’s earlier research has shown the sole measurement of Hg levels as insufficient to connect biotic Hg dynamics to environmental change, whereas the analysis of Hg stable isotopes proved to be a promising tool for source discrimination and biotic transfer. SEASOL will build on the novel application of stable isotope analysis to identify the sources of Hg within the fjord system and the pathways to Hg accumulation within sentinel marine species. On the short-term, the study will provide fundamental knowledge to help understand how emerging sources of Hg from rapid environmental change will impact Arctic marine predators. On the long-term, SEASOL will contribute to the development of early-warning, adaptive management strategies, including modelling, for mitigating the cumulative impact of pollutants and climate change on Arctic marine species. This multidisciplinary approach and the central position of the host institution (Norwegian Polar Institute) in the field of Polar Research will equip the Fellow with a broad set of new skills and lay the foundation for building her specific niche as a future leader in marine pollution science.

Vi vil arrangere Havforskarmøte 2024 i Tromsø. Norsk havforsking står sterkt internasjonalt, men det er få nasjonale arenaar der havforskarar i Noreg kan samlast for å dele forsking og bygge nettverk. Havforskarmøtet er derfor ein viktig møteplass. Dei ca. 40 - 100 deltakarane kjem frå ulike sektorar og representerer marine fagmiljø frå heile landet. Det er eit ope arrangement, med påmelding via nettsidene til NHF. 
Havforskarmøtet blir arrangert årleg, og kvart år er fokus på eit spesifikt tema. Eksempel på tema frå dei seinaste åra har vore: «Hvordan få mer mat fra havet» (2017), "Hvordan kan forskere gjøre økologi mer politisk relevant?" (2019), "Klimaendring i havet" (2020, online), "Nye metodar for å møte morgondagens utfordringar" (2021), «Bruk eller vern – arealbruk til havs» (2022) og «Mat frå havet» (2023) - sjekk https://www.havforsk.no/nb/arkiv/ 
I 2024 blir temaet “Effektar av klimaendringar og klimatiltak på marin natur”, kor vi ønskjer ein diskusjon både om direkte effektar av klimaendringane på enkeltartar og marine økosystem, men og korleis dei tiltaka vi iverksett for å motverke klimaendringane kan påverke marin natur. Eksempel på slike tiltak være naturbaserte løysingar i sjø, bygging av havvindmølleparkar for grøn energiproduksjon, eller gruvedrift i fjord og hav for å sikre mineral nødvendig for ei grøn omstilling. Vi ønskjer å ha ei tverrfagleg vinkling til forskingsspørsmåla, og vil gjere møtet til ein møteplass mellom akademia, forvaltning og industriaktørar. Dei største effektane av klimaendringane ser vi i nordlege havområde, som i Barentshavet der forskarar har observert eit skifte frå eit arktisk til eit meir atlantisk klima og økosystem dei siste tiåra. Samtidig er det i dette området fleire initiativ både knytt til gruvedrift og havvind (til dømes GoliatVind-prosjektet). Vi fant det derfor naturlig å legge årets møte til Tromsø.

Havforskermøte 2024

Økosystemene og arealene i havet er under økende press med høy petroleumsproduksjon og nye prosjekter innen havvind og karbonfangst. De samlede forurensingseffektene av denne utvidelsen i kombinasjon med økt risiko for oljesøl og negative effekter av klimaendringene forverrer forholdene for livet i havet. Vitenskapelige studier bidrar til økt kunnskap om miljøkonsekvensene av denne type industri, men ineffektive data- og informasjonsflyt inn i operasjonelle forvaltningsverktøy er et hinder for en oppdatert og treffsikker bærekraftig arealplanlegging. 

Tobis er en nøkkelart i Nordsjøen og i økosystemene langs kysten, der den spiser dyreplankton og er selv viktig mat for sjøfugler, fisk og sjøpattedyr. De voksne tobisene er stedbundne til områder med grov sand og grus de graver seg ned i lange perioder. Her jakter tobisen plankton i vannsøylen om våren og sommeren, og midtvinters foregår gytingen i de samme områdene. Tobis legger egg som kleber seg til sand og grus, og i norsk sone av Nordsjøen er disse habitatene definert som særlig verdifulle og sårbare områder for å gi ekstra beskyttelse for denne nøkkelarten. Tobislarvene derimot drifter med havstrømmene etter klekking om våren, og sprer seg over store geografiske områder der overlevelsen er avhengig av strømmønster, larvens svømmeadferd og mattilgang. Larvefasen er sårbar, og mengden larver som overlever har stor betydning for produksjonen i økosystemene i Nordsjøen og langs kysten av Norge. 

Industriaktivitet og forurensing kan påvirke driftsmønsteret og overlevelsen til tobislarvene, og KnowSandeel prosjektet skal lage en operasjonell larvedriftsmodell som skal fôres med ny vitenskapelig kunnskap om naturlig larveadferd, og sårbarheten for oljesøl og industriaktivitet. Verktøyet vil effektivisere integreringen av ny vitenskapelig kunnskap inn i driftsmodellene, og dermed bidra til en mer effektiv og presis kunnskapsbaserte risikomodeller ved planlegging av ny industriaktivitet i de marine økosystemene.

Marine ecosystems are under increasing pressure from expanding energy production, including offshore petroleum, wind, and carbon capture projects. This expansion leads to cumulative pollution and a higher risk of oil spills, exacerbating the impact on the marine environment. Climate change further compounds these challenges. The lack of dynamic data pipelines hampers the integration of scientific findings into spatial planning tools for eco- sustainable development in the offshore energy industry. Knowledge gaps about vulnerable early-life stages of key fish species, like the lesser sandeel, hinder effective regulation in the North Sea and Norwegian coast industries.
The lesser sandeel plays a crucial role in marine food webs, connecting plankton to top predators. Despite protective measures for adult sandeel, knowledge gaps persist regarding larval dispersal, recruitment dynamics, and responses to stressors from the petroleum industry. The survival of sandeel larvae depends on behavioral patterns, and anthropogenic stressors can impact behavior, affecting individual survival and larval drift pathways.
Existing risk assessment models in Norway consider fish eggs and larvae dispersion but lack species-specific knowledge on larval drift patterns and vulnerability to stressors. The KnowSandeel project aims to address these gaps by enhancing risk assessment models by including realism-based larval drift model and empirical sensitive data in addition to develop an operational larval drift forecast tool specifically for sandeel. The project contributes to more precise and sustainable decisions in spatial planning and industrial development in marine environments. Overall, KnowSandeel seeks to promote the coexistence of ecological sustainability and industrial development in offshore activities.

Realistic assessment of the effects of anthropogenic offshore activity on the habitats of a keystone ecological and commercial fish species

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Formålet med dette brukerdrevne prosjektet er å utforske, utvikle og evaluere effekten ved bruk av Virtual Reality Teknologi (VRT) for å fremme helse og velferd for personer med psykiske lidelser og ruslidelser i samarbeid med RIO og Hamar kommune. Studien er tverrfaglig, multisektoriell, bruker flere forskningsmetoder og utvikles i nært samarbeid med brukerne for å utforske effektiviteten av velferdsteknologi i bedringsprosessen til en av de mest sårbare brukergruppene: personer med samtidig rus og psykisk lidelse, som ofte blir glemt som deltakere i teknologisk utvikling. Brukerdrevet innovasjon er et grunnleggende prinsipp i denne studien. Vi ønsker å vise hvordan denne sårbare og marginaliserte målgruppen forholder seg til VRT, noe som vil gi ny innsikt og være et utgangspunkt for forebygging og behandling av personer med rus og psykiske lidelser. Prosjektet vil samle ny empirisk kunnskap om hvilke psykologiske effekter som en VR-opplevelse kan gi på kort og lang sikt. Et spesielt trekk ved prosjektet er at det skal utvikles en VRT prototype som lett kan tilpasses andre målgrupper, og målet er å utvikle denne prototypen på en kostnadseffektiv måte, som vil redusere helse- og sosialutgiftene på lang sikt. Videre vil VRT sannsynligvis endre arbeidet til de som gir tjenester til denne målgruppen. Prototypens innovative potensial betyr at den også kan overføres til andre land. Et nytt aspekt er at brukerne selv vil være involvert, både i studiedesignet og utviklingen av VR-prototypen. Dette vil være fruktbart for designerens utviklingsprosess og gjøre det mulig for forskere å diskutere etiske aspekter og bekymringer ved å anvende VRT på personer som står overfor store samfunnsutfordringer. For å nå våre mål, har vi knyttet til oss medarbeidere som kombinerer høy kompetanse fra forskere innen psykologi, psykiatri, teologi, sosiologi, helseøkonomi og audiovisuelle medier med spillutviklere, lokale myndigheter og erfaringskonsulenter

This collaborative and user driven study aims to deploy virtually reality technology(VRT) to enhance social inclusion among persons with MHD/SUD who belong to one of the most disadvantaged groups. They are marginalized when it comes to education, employment, meaningful activity and social relations. The Norwegian Service User Plan, a register on persons with MHD/SUD, shows that meaningful daily activities are the greatest challenge for these persons. The ability to be included in the society as regular citizens is one of the strongest desires and an indicator of quality of life. According to recent research, lack of social inclusion among persons with MHD/SUD is both intrinsic and structural in nature, but there is no panacea to solve this problem. To a limited degree, VRT has been utilized in treating MHD/SUD, but little is known about the target groups behavior and attitudes towards VRT and how an e-health solution could be beneficial to avoid marginalization. The greatest challenge in our study is the possible lack of interest among the target group and their health care workers to use VRT as a tool to improve social inclusion. We have received support for the study from our two collaboration partners RIO - an user organisation and the municipality of Hamar, that using VRT may be a possible "life turning tool" for persons with MHD/SUD. Further, VRTs are advancing rapidly and we might end up using outdated VRT until we have the results. To mitigate this we put an emphasis on the development of software and less on hardware and believe that the VRT we build will be generic and useful for any type of hardware. The anticipated results will have far reaching implications for the quality of life of persons with MHD/SUD including other marginalized groups. Providing a VRT may have positive effects on the delivery of care to under served groups, and might further have economic implications with more resources are available to expand services to those in greatest need.

Virtual Reality as a facilitator for participation in society among persons with mental health and/or substance use disorders

Multiple drivers influenced the chain of events called "Arctic amplification", reflecting in ecosystem impacts. It is precisely in an Arctic fjord environment, the Kongsfjorden-Krossfjorden system (KKS), located on the northwest coast of Spitsbergen, that also the Atlantification process is occurring. Due to the influx of abundant Atlantic water masses into the fjord throughout the year, this process is also changing the salinity regime and influencing the hydrography of the fjord system. Moreover, considering the rapid retreat of the front of tidewater glaciers, huge amount of sediments rapidly accumulates in the inner part of the fjord. All these parameters also affect the occurrence and availability of pollutants in the marine environment. In particular, information on the relative importance of local sources vs long-range transport of pollutants, and also studies including assessments on Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) are lacking. The main objective of this project is to improve our knowledge and provide new data on biogeochemical conditions and contamination (POPs and CECs) of the Artic KKS at different environmental levels. Specifically, sampling of particulate organic matter, superficial bottom sediments and sediment cores will be carried out to provide more information about: i) how much the contribution of suspended material (nutrients and organic matter) released by the glaciers in the inner fjord area affects the sediment characteristics and accumulation rates; ii) the effects of Atlantification on marine biogeochemical condition and contaminants fluxes; iii) the contamination trends, focusing on selected POPs and CECs, comparing local sources due to human activities with LRT and secondary emissions in summer season, to figure out their impact on marine life and ecosystem; iv) the evolution of the contaminant concentrations over the last century.

Prosjektet AKMA (Avansert Kunnskap om Metan i Arktis) har som hovedformål å utvikle og etablere tverrfaglig utdanning og forskning med fokus på Arktiske metankilder. AKMA skal utdanne framtidige eksperter i Arktisk marin forskning spesielt knyttet til klimagass problematikk.
Utdanning og forskning i prosjektet er basert på et samarbeid mellom Senter for fremragende forskning CAGE (Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate) ved UiT Norges Arktiske Universitet, Tromsø, Norge, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution WHOI USA, og mange andre internasjonale universiteter og forskningssentre over hele verden, fra Sør-Amerika, Sentral-Asia, Afrika og Europa.
I samarbeidet inngår vitenskapelig og teknisk utveksling mellom partnere og utvikling av nye studietilbud på Master/PhD nivå i Arktisk geokjemi inkludert utdanningstokt i Arktis.

AKMA skal gi grunnlag for langsiktige samarbeidsrelasjoner mellom de involverte institusjonene og etablering av nye permanente studietilbud ved UiT Norges Arktiske Universitet.

The INTPART AKMA (Advancing Knowledge on Methane in the Arctic) project will support education and research collaboration between the Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE), at the Department of Geosciences, UiT-The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. With a teaching oceanographic cruise and an intensive course, we will engage graduate students from Norway, USA and other countries in exploring science questions related to Arctic Ocean microbe communities related to the release of the greenhouse gas methane from the seafloor. Established students will participate in a two-weeks teaching cruise when they will receive instruction during transit to the sampling sites, and be active members of the scientific party, being involved in data collection and all other activities at sea. Also, AKMA will develop an intensive two-week course centered on Arctic cold-adapted microorganisms, the global methane cycle, and oceanographic processes to give a different set of students in depth knowledge about theory and methodology. To sustain this effort beyond the duration of the project, we assure that the course will continue at both MSc and PhD levels beyond 2022 and be included in the UiT course catalogues, offered every second year. This application is affiliated with CAGE (http://cage.uit.no), a SFF Centre of Excellence, conducting world-class research in the Norwegian Arctic, primarily in the field of gas hydrate and affiliated studies. The INTPART program will leverage involvement of CAGE partners, such as researchers from the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics at UiT-The Arctic University of Norway.

Advancing Knowledge on Methane in the Arctic (AKMA): Norway-USA Collaboration

The aim is to directly sample, instrument and assess life, hydrology and flow dynamics within and around a subglacial lake (SGL) beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet. SGLs are an extraordinary component of the hydrosphere and among the most extreme aquatic environments where life is found. The impact of the 1000s of predicted SGLs on ice sheet flow is also unconstrained and lacustrine sediments that drape their beds provide records of past environmental change and ice sheet stability. Direct access, sampling and analysis is a technical and scientific challenge requiring a focused yet multidisciplinary approach. G-SLIDE has five key objectives and will be first to:
1. Characterise a Greenland SGL along with its hydrological, glaciological and geological setting;
2. Drill multiple boreholes into it to sample its water, sediments and ice properties;
3. Analyse microbial life within it, along with its biogeochemical signature, cycles and flow-paths;
4. Determine the impact that SGLs have on basal hydrology and ice flow dynamics and;
5. Assess the past stability and future trajectory of the most vulnerable SW sector of the ice sheet.

The ERC panel evaluation: "The exploration of the subglacial lakes of Greenland is a very ambitious project and likely to generate new knowledge of these systems, particularly regarding the life forms and their mode of metabolism. The panel recognized this as very exciting exploratory science, although there were some concerns about the broad-scale applicability and impact of the findings. WP4 to investigate the role of subglacial lakes in the hydrology and flow dynamics of the ice sheet was insufficiently developed, and the panel was not convinced that the results could be effectively scaled to address global issues. The PI is an excellent glaciologist with extensive experience in expeditions to high-latitude regions and a strong history of mentoring early career scientists."
All points will be addressed and a full risk assessment implemented.
