Den økende digitaliseringen av grunnleggende offentlige og private tjenester har ført med seg enorme fremskritt. Samtidig har det økt risikoen for flere og mer sofistikerte cyberangrep. Cyberangrep rettet mot kritiske sektorer som helse, finans og energi setter befolkningens liv i fare når de lykkes og er derfor blitt en stor bekymring. For å håndtere disse truslene har EU forslått flere lover for å forbedre både den digitale og fysiske motstandskraften til kritiske enheter og nettverk, inkludert Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS 2), Critical Entities Resilience Directive (CER) og Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Fordi dette er et fagområde i utvikling med lite rettspraksis og annen veiledning, er det mangel på jurirdisk forskning. Der det er forskning er det ofte fragmentert mellom institusjoner og disipliner, noe som reduserer rekkevidden og påvirkningskraften.
CyberReg-nettverket samler et tverrfaglig team av forskere med mål om å fremme vitenskapelig utveksling og påvirkning ved å (1) stimulere til kollektiv forskningsinnsats og utvikle en felles forståelse for virkningen av lovforslag innen cybersikkerhet og (2) bygge broer mellom akademikere, beslutningstakere og industri for å bidra til et mer motstandsdyktig samfunn. For å nå disse målene vil nettverket fokusere på å besvare følgende spørsmål: (1) i hvilken grad adresserer de overnevnte lovforslagene cybertruslene samfunnet står overfor i dag? (2) Hvordan påvirker disse lovforslagene hverandre og eksisterende regler? (3) Hvordan skal vi bygge bro mellom generelle juridiske krav til cybersikkerhet og organisasjoners behov for å ha konkrete og handlingsrettede elementer? Nettverkets forskingsinnsats vil først og fremst fokusere på regulatorisk utvikling i EU og Norge, men vil også holde seg oppdatert på den globale utviklingen innen cybersikkerhetsnormer.

Cyberthreats have become a great societal concern. The increasing digitalisation of vital public and private services, together with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has expanded the cyberthreat landscape, giving rise to new vulnerabilities and risks. To deal with this new reality, the EU has unveiled several legislative proposals that aim to bolster cyber and physical resilience of critical entities and networks. Key among these initiatives are the proposals for NIS 2 Directive, the Critical Entities Resilience Directive, the Cyber Resilience Act and the Secure Connectivity Act. These initiatives come on top of existing and upcoming legislative initiatives that address security such as the GDPR, proposals for eIDAS Regulation and the Artificial Intelligence Act. This creates a complex and dense regulatory landscape that requires scrutiny. The CyberReg Network brings together researchers with the aim of stimulating harmonized research efforts on these legislative initiatives and increase impact by engaging with, and disseminating insights to, key change agents from the public and private sectors. 

The activities of the Network will focus on the follwoing three key areas: 1) creating avenues to foster knowledge exchange with a view to developing shared understanding of the regulatory developments, their interaction and impact in addressing the cyberthreats; 2) creating support system for researchers to increase visibility and collaboration internationally, encourage publication in international journals, and thereby strengthen the quality of research; 3) increase the discovery and accessibility of research on cyberthreats and associated regulatory developments and thereby improve the ability of industry, policymakers, and students to better understand and respond to the threats. The network will run for four years and will bring together an interdisciplinary team comprising researchers from BI, UiO, UiT, Politihøyskolen, TUM and University of Luzern.

Research Network on Regulatory Developments in Cybersecurity

Den geopolitiske situasjonen i Europa endret seg dramatisk med Russlands invasjon av Ukraina, og forårsaket umiddelbart bekymring for sikkerheten til europeisk energiinfrastruktur. Etter sabotasjen mot Nord Stream-rørledningene og observasjoner av uidentifiserte droner rundt norske olje- og gassinstallasjoner til havs, har det blitt et mål å sikre sikkerheten til petroleumsinfrastruktur. En rekke internasjonale, statlige og bedriftsaktører må nå samarbeide for å koordinere innsatsen for å sikre kritisk petroleumsinfrastruktur.

Koordinering og samarbeid mellom vidt forskjellige aktører rundt felles problemer viser seg ofte å være utfordrende. INTERSECT utforsker hvordan det institusjonelle miljøet rundt petroleumsinfrastrukturen kan samarbeide om sikkerhetsstyring. Til grunn for prosjektet ligger antakelsen om at tilstrekkelig sikkerhetsstyring må omfatte flere styringsnivå og en rekke aktører. INTERSECT analyserer utfordringer og muligheter for sikkerhetsstyring mellom flere analysenivå; internasjonalt nivå, nasjonalt nivå, og sektor- og industrinivå. Prosjektet vil her studere samspillet og samarbeidet mellom aktører på ulike nivå, inkludert NATO, norske statlige institusjoner, tilsynsmyndigheter og petroleumsselskaper. Fokus vil ligge på å identifisere og overvinne samarbeidsbarrierer.

Staten er ansvarlig for nasjonal sikkerhet, men selskaper eier petroleumsinfrastrukturen. Ved analyse av industrinivået er bedriftsinterne forhold og tilpasningsevne sentralt. Petroleumsselskapene er rettet mot sikkerhet (safety), ikke først og fremst sikring (security), og de nye omstendighetene tvinger selskapene til å rette mer oppmerksomhet mot "security". INTERSECT utforsker bedriftsinterne løsninger i samarbeid med nøkkelbedrifter i norsk sektor, og analyserer også bedrifters roller i sikkerhetspolitikken kritisk.

INTERSECT er et tverrfaglig samfunnsvitenskapelig prosjekt som bygger på disiplinene statsvitenskap, organisasjonssosiologi og samfunnssikkerhet.

The geopolitical situation following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put a premium on the security of petroleum infrastructures. The changed geopolitical context represents a sudden and significant shift in the framework conditions for the petroleum sector's risk governance model. The shift involves 1) a more influential international dimension in the petroleum sector’s risk governance, and 2) changes in the intersections between safety and security, at different societal levels. These shifts, and how to deal with them, are the points of departure for INTERSECT.

The stronger international dimension involves a new regulatory and supervisory landscape where state security regulations (the Security Act) enter a field where risk governance has traditionally been based on strong sectoral-industrial risk regulation. The new geopolitical situation, and the corresponding changes in the regulatory framework conditions, challenge the sector’s institutional logic and the division of labour between safety and security regulators and supervisory agencies. Changes in power structures, roles and responsibilities emerge, and trigger a need for coordination and collaboration to be able to align matters of safety and security into comprehensive risk governance. The changes also challenge companies’ structures, cultures and practices for risk management.

INTERSECT responds to an industrial and societal need to detect and understand the conditions for constructing adequate security risk governance around petroleum infrastructure. Assuming that adequate security governance must be multi-level and multi-actor, INTERSECT studies coordination and collaboration between actors at different governance levels, from the international, through the state to the company level. INTERSECT explores challenges and opportunities for security governance, seeking to identify and overcome collaborative barriers, including the alignment and collaboration between safety and security professionals.

New geopolitics and the interaction between safety and security in petroleum risk governance

The TURNkey platform: an earthquake risk-informed system for preparedness and disaster management

I løpet av det siste tiåret har stadig flere offentlige og private aktører ønsket seg innpass i den eksklusive ‘romklubben’. Private organisasjoner og stater - inkludert de nordiske landene - utvikler utskytningsinstallasjoner i den arktiske regionen. Land i nordområdene har lenge vist liten interesse for utviklingen av romsektoren i nordområdene. Dermed markerer det økende politiske fokuset og økonomiske innspillene til sektoren et strategisk skifte, med mulige konsekvenser for styresett, bærekraftig utvikling og sikkerhet. Det er foreløpig lite kunnskap om hvordan utviklingen av rominfrastruktur i nordområdene så langt har påvirket sikkerhets- og miljøpolitikk og praksis, og hva konsekvensene er for den arktiske regionen. NordSpace-prosjektet skal adressere dette kunnskapsgapet. Forskningen vil omhandle skjæringspunktet mellom romvirksomhet og miljø- og sikkerhetspolitikk, i tre mindre kjente romnasjoner i Norden: Norge, Sverige og Island. Det tverrfaglige teamet vil kombinere kvalitativ nettverksanalyse, etnografiske og visuelle metoder, og diskursanalyse. Målet er nyansert empirisk kunnskap om økonomiske aktiviteter, styringsrammer og ambisjoner og visjoner til de tre landene i sammenheng med deres forsøk på å oppnå global anerkjennelse som romfartsnasjoner. Virkningene av disse aktivitetene på geopolitiske konstellasjoner og på lokalmiljøene i den arktiske regionen vil bli analysert.

Over the last decade, outer space has become an opportunity for economic accumulation for public and private actors. While there is increasing interest in the social sciences in understanding how global space ambitions and commercial interests shape local environments or environmental geopolitics, there is however, little understanding how the development of space infrastructures in the High North affect security and environmental politics and practices today, and with what kind of consequences for the Arctic region. Located at the intersection of International Relations (IR), Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Social Anthropology, NordSpace aims to understand the ramifications of space infrastructures in the High North by systematically studying the intersection of space activities with environmental and security politics in the case of three lesser-known space nations in the Nordic region i.e., Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. Bringing together an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds from different social sciences and expertise in various qualitative methods, the project will innovatively combine qualitative network analysis with ethnographic, visual methods, and discourse analysis. The results of the project will advance scientific knowledge on space activities of three Nordic countries and the implications of space infrastructures for the High North to build critical expertise across Nordic countries on a new and rapidly developing phenomenon.

Nordic Space Infrastructures - Environment, Security, and Future Imaginaries of Outer Space in the High North

Den vedvarende smitteoverføringen av prioner som gir skrantesjuke (CWD) fortsetter å true overlevelsen til hjorteviltpopulasjoner i Nord-Amerika, og deres usikre zoonotiske potensiale vekker bekymring for folkehelsen.
Siden det første tilfellet av CWD hos norsk villrein og elg i 2016, er sykdommen funnet i flere norske regioner og nordiske land. Samarbeidet vårt med nøkkelpartnere i dette prosjektet har ledet til identifiseringen av flere CWD-stammer hos norsk rein, elg og hjort. Av spesiell betydning er disse stammene ikke relatert til de som for tiden finnes i Nord-Amerika. Disse funnene har klare implikasjoner for den fremtidige forvaltningen av disse europeiske skrantesjuke prioner hos hjortedyr.
Med konsortiets brede og komplementære kompetanse og ekspertise, vil dette ambisiøse prosjektet kombinere dyreforsøk i reinsdyr- og gnageremodeller, i tillegg til in vitro-eksperimenter med de nyeste og sensitive teknologiene (RT-QuIC, PMCA) og en potensiell feltanvendbar test, Minnesota-QuiC-testen (MN-QuiC).
Potensialet til CWD-stammer for spredning blant hjortevilt og for å infisere nye dyrearter, inkludert mennesker, avhenger i hovedsak av to hovedfaktorer: nivået av EKSPONERING for CWD-smitte og mottageligheten til de EKSPONERTE ARTENE for de forskjellige CWD-stammene. EmergingCWD tar sikte på å adressere begge sider av dette problemet. Det vil gi en ny forståelse av hvordan de fremvoksende CWD-prionene identifisert i Norge kan spre seg både innenfor og mellom vertsarter.
Siden prioner er forskjellige fra de fleste kjente smittestoffer som virus og bakterier, er kunnskapsmangelen om smitteevne og overføringsmekanismer fortsatt stor. Gitt de mulige dramatiske konsekvensene av prionrelatert sykdom, vil dette prosjektet representere et avgjørende innspill for å tette dette kunnskapsgapet av relevans for både Norge og det internasjonale vitenskapsmiljøet.

The inexorable contagious transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions continues to threaten the survival of cervid populations in North America, and their uncertain zoonotic potential raises concerns for public health. 
Since the first case of CWD in Norwegian reindeer and moose in 2016, the disease is found in several Norwegian regions and Nordic countries. Our recent collaborations with key partners in this proposal have identified multiple CWD strains in Norwegian reindeer, moose and red deer. Of particular importance, these strains are unrelated to those currently sustaining the North American epidemic. These findings have clear implications for the future management of these emerging European prions. 
With the strong and complementary skills and expertise of the consortium and the unprecedented resources it represents, this ambitious project will combine live animal experiments in reindeer and mice models, in addition to in vitro experiments with the most recent and sensitive technologies (RT-QuIC, PMCA) and a potential field-deployable test,  the Minnesota-QuiC test (MN-QuiC).
The potential of CWD strains for spreading among cervids and for infecting new animal species, including humans, essentially depends on two main factors: the level of EXPOSURE to CWD infectivity and the intrinsic SUSCEPTIBILITY of the EXPOSED SPECIES to the different CWD strains. EmergingCWD aims at addressing both sides of this issue. It will provide a new understanding of how the emerging CWD prions identified in Norway can spread both within and between host species. 
Being different from most known infectious agents like viruses and bacteria, knowledge about prions, their infectiousness, and their transmission mechanisms continues to lag behind. Given the possible dramatic consequences of prion-related disease, this project will represent a decisive input to close this knowledge gap of relevance to both Norway and the international scientific community.

Chronic wasting disease  prions from Norwegian cervids: Assessing the pathogenesis, shedding, spillover and zoonotic potential

Om Paris-avtalen skal oppfylles må 80% av verdens energiproduksjon ha null utslipp innen 2030, og all energi må ha null utslipp innen 2050. Teknologiene som behøves for å få til dette dramatiske skiftet avhenger av mineraler som kalles «kritiske materialer» (litium, kobber, sjeldne jordarter osv.). Hvis disse utvinnes i betydelig omfang i Arktis kan det endre regionens fokus fra olje og gass til gruvevirksomhet. Det vil kunne komplisere relasjonene mellom de arktiske statene og mellom dem og eksterne aktører som er interessert i disse ressursene. Frem til nå har kritiske materialer fått lite oppmerksomhet innen forskningen på arktisk geopolitikk, og ditto har forskningen om kritiske materialer globalt viet Arktis lite oppmerksomhet. NEXTRUSH-prosjektet skal fylle tomrommet mellom disse to forskningsområdene. 

Prosjektet er tverrfaglig. En ingeniør skal studere hvilke materialer som etterspørres for teknologier for ren energi, en geolog vil studere eksisterende data om arktiske mineralreserver, og samfunnsvitere vil analysere hva det de finner ut betyr for geopolitikk, internasjonale relasjoner, arktiske institusjoner og Kinas rolle i regionen. Prosjektet vil inkludere en analyse av hvilke land og produsenter som dominerer markedene for de forskjellige mineralene samt en scenarioøvelse.

Prosjektet vil produsere seks artikler i fagtidsskrifter, Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI), scenarier for arktisk gruvevirksomhet og dens konsekvenser, Svalbard-symposiet om gruvevirksomhet på havbunnen og fora for kritiske materialer og risiko.

Prosjektet utføres av noen av de forskerne som er mest aktive innen samfunnsvitenskapelig forskning på nordområdene i Norge.

To fulfill the Paris Agreement, the world needs to transition to 80% zero-emission energy by 2030, and 100% by 2050. The clean energy technologies needed to make this dramatic shift are dependent on the minerals known as "critical materials" (lithium, copper, rare earth elements etc.). If these are sourced from the Arctic, it might cause a shift in the interest in the region from fossil fuels to mining. This may complicate relations among the Arctic states and with the external actors interested in these resources. So far, research on Arctic geopolitics has paid little attention to this shift, and, conversely, the growing literature on the geopolitics of critical materials for the energy transition pays little attention to the Arctic. The NEXTRUSH project will fill the gap.

The project is genuinely interdisciplinary. An engineer will review the materials needed for clean energy technologies, geologists will review the data on Arctic reserves and compare them to global reserves, and, finally, social scientists will assess the implications for geopolitics, international relations, Arctic institutions and governance, and the role of China. The reviews of existing technological and geological data will be combined the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to measure the market dominance of supply sources and a Shell-style scenario-building exercise will be carried out. 

The project will result in six articles published in academic journals, the Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI) on oil, gas and mining in the Arctic (with its own website), a set of scenarios for Arctic mining and its consequences, the Svalbard Seabed Mining Symposium and Critical Materials Risk Fora.

The project team include some of the people who are most active in research on the Arctic in Norway and who have an exceptional track record and resources available for academic and public communication, see the section on dissemination.

Next Arctic Rush? Critical Materials for the Energy Transition

Pollinatorene er truet. Dette får konsekvenser for både det biologiske mangfoldet og matsikkerheten vår. I WINGS skal vi utvikle løsninger for å etablere mer pollinatorvennlige kulturlandskap.
Pollinatorer, som bier og blomsterfluer, er helt avgjørende for de fleste blomstrende planter som formerer seg med frø. Dette gjelder også for mange av matplantene våre. Faktisk blir rundt 30 % av all maten vi spiser direkte eller indirekte påvirket av at pollinatorene gjør jobben sin. 
Trusselen mot ville pollinatorer er i stor grad knyttet til tap eller redusert kvalitet av viktige leveområder i kulturlandskapet, som slåttemark, kystlynghei, naturbeitemark og artsrike veikanter. Arealendringer, som intensivering av landbruket, er hovedårsaken til at disse leveområdene reduseres. 
For å ivareta ville pollinatorer er det et hovedmål i WINGS å utvikle løsninger for å forvalte og restaurere pollinatorvennlige kulturlandskap i alle våre landsdeler. Løsninger rettet mot ville pollinatorer skal ta hensyn til både ulike interesser innen involverte sektorer som landbruk, næringsliv og miljø og kulturlandskapets ulike sammensetninger rundt om i Norge. 
Delmålene i prosjektet er å:
(i)	identifisere og samle eksisterende data om hvor i kulturlandskapet det finnes ressurser som er viktige for pollinatorer, 
(ii)	vurdere kvaliteten av leveområder som er påvirket av ulike matproduksjonssystemer og kulturlandskap,
(iii)	forbedre tilskuddsordninger som skal ivareta ville pollinatorer,
(iv)	skape bærekraftige løsninger for pollinatorvennlige jordbrukslandskap og
(v)	formidle løsninger for pollinatorvennlige tiltak til samfunnet.
WINGS er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom forskning, forvaltning, næringsliv, landbruk og miljøorganisasjon, alle med en felles interesse om å ivareta pollinatorer. Partnere er NIBIO (prosjekteier), Norsk Landbruksrådgivning, Statsforvalteren i Nordland, Norsk Kylling, Sabima, NINA, NMBU og Aarhus Universitet.

Globally, wild pollinators are under pressure due to the total impact of land use changes which has caused the loss, fragmentation and reduced quality of pollinator habitat. Successful implementation and uptake of management solutions aimed at protecting wild pollinators requires coordination between sectors that may have conflicting interests and goals. The main objective of WINGS is therefore to develop solutions for the management and restoration of pollinator-friendly agricultural landscapes that consider sustainability trade-offs across sectors and agricultural landscape contexts. To reach this objective, WINGS uses a transdisciplinary co-learning approach in which researchers from social, ecological, and mathematical sciences team up with agricultural advisors, food industry, NGOs and area management authorities. WINGS is organised into five integrated work packages (WPs) that address knowledge gaps about area-resource management, sustainability and ecology when safeguarding pollinators. WP0 will ensure the coordination and communication between WPs which is paramount to the success of the transdisciplinary backbone of WINGS. In WP1, we will mobilise and integrate data on area-based resources important for wild pollinators. In WP2, we will quantify pollinator habitat quality across agricultural landscapes. WP3 will identify solutions for improving agri-environmental schemes and their synergies. In WP4, we will develop and communicate sustainable solutions for management of pollinator-friendly agricultural landscapes. A variety of communication channels will be used to reach target audiences, including a national conference and farmer excursions. Close collaboration with partners from stakeholder groups will ensure capacity building and outreach across sectors and society. WINGS will contribute both nationally and internationally to a broader understanding of how to safeguard pollinators as an integrated part of agri-environmental land use practices.

Pollinator-friendly agricultural landscapes: Solutions for management of habitats under pressure

I DIATOX vil vi geneditere mikroalger for å muliggjøre industriell produksjon av det sjeldne pigmentet diatoxanthin. Forskning tyder på at diatoxanthin har antioksidant- og anti-inflammatoriske egenskaper, og i tillegg egenskaper som potensielt kan forhindre kreftutvikling.

Diatoxanthin finnes kun i enkelte grupper av mikroalger og produseres kun når algene må beskytte seg mot sterkt lys. Diatoxanthin kan sees på som et «solbrillepigment». Forskning på dette sjeldne pigmentet er begrenset, men nyere data tyder på at diatoxanthin har høyere bioaktivitet enn kommersielt tilgjengelige pigmenter. Kommersiell produksjon av diatoxanthin fra «naturlige» mikroalger vil ikke være mulig siden pigmentet hurtig fjernes fra cellene når de ikke lenger utsettes for sterkt lys, noe som vil være tilfelle under høsting av algebiomasse i stor skala. Produksjon av kommersielt interessante nivå av diatoxanthin i «naturlige» mikroalgeceller vil også være avhengig av at kulturen utsettes for sterkt lys over lengre tid. Dette kan være teknisk utfordrende ved høye algekonsentrasjoner og forbundet med høye strømkostnader i land hvor algeproduksjonen er avhengig av kunstig lys. I dette prosjektet vil vi lage algemutanter som overproduserer diatoxanthin uten å være avhengig av å bli utsatt for veldig sterkt lys, og hvor produsert diatoxanthin er stabilt selv etter at algecellene er fjernet fra lyskilden. Vi vil finne optimale dyrkingsbetingelser, og høstings- og prosesseringsmetoder som sikrer høyt utbytte og intakt bioaktivitet av pigmentet. Bioaktivitet som kan ha en positiv effekt på menneskers helse vil bli undersøkt, og potensiale for kommersiell produksjon vil bli evaluert av bedrifter med erfaring innen storskalaproduksjon av mikroalger. Produksjon av et høyverdiprodukt som diatoxanthin kan gjøre mikroalgedyrking lønnsomt og åpne for muligheten til å bruke resten av algebiomassen til fôr eller biodrivstoff.

Microalgae are a sustainable resource that have the potential to meet the world’s energy, feed and material needs. However, the microalgae industry is still in its infancy, and several challenges need to be overcome to lower the production costs of microalgae ingredients. Production of high-value compounds like carotenoids has the potential to secure economic viability of the microalgae industry and pave the way for use of the rest of biomass for e.g. feed and biofuel. Carotenoids are beneficial for human health through their antioxidant effects and might offer protection against a variety of diseases. Recently, the photoprotective carotenoid diatoxanthin has been shown to have pronounced bioactivity, outperforming commercially available carotenoids as a potential disease preventing agent. However, to enable industrial production of the pigment it is necessary to overcome the dependence of prolonged exposure to high light intensities to reach commercially interesting pigment levels and to avoid loss of accumulated diatoxanthin during harvesting of the biomass. In this project we aim to establish a diatoxanthin production line suitable for large-scale commercial production of the pigment. Microalgae mutant lines that overproduce diatoxanthin without the need for high intensity light and where the accumulated product is stable after removal of the algae cells from the light source will be created. Growth conditions will be optimized, and methods will be established for harvesting and processing of the diatoxanthin-containing biomass to maximize yield and secure intact bioactivity of the pigment. To confirm the bioactivity of diatoxanthin and expand upon its published effects relevant to human health, antioxidative, photoprotective and chemotherapeutic properties will be evaluated. The potential for commercial production of diatoxanthin using the gene edited algae strains will be explored by companies experienced in industrial-scale cultivation of microalgae.

QualiSea_Diss har som mål å styrke resultatformidlingen fra ERA BlueBio-prosjektet "QualiSea" (Nye metoder for kvalitetskontroll og optimalisering av forsyningskjeden for dyrket tare til mat og fôr, for økt kvalitet og bærekraft). I QualiSea er ett av målene å utvikle energi- og kostnadseffektive konserveringsmetoder. Som basis for dette, undersøkes faktorer som påvirker stabilitet og kvalitet for fersk biomasse, og som også har betydning for valg av konserveringsmetoder. Videre vurderes og testes metoder og instrumentering som raskt kan estimere sammensetning og kvalitet av biomassen i felt, under transport, og ved ankomst til prosesseringsanlegget, siden dette vil bestemme bruk av biomassen og valg av konserveringsmetode. Utfordringene relatert til konservering har blitt enda mer presserende de siste årene. Siden deler av prosjekt er svært anvendt og vil ha praktisk betydning for taredyrkerne, ønsker vi å formidle disse resultatene i et format tilpasset tareindustrien. I QualiSea_Diss vil det bli utarbeidet to faktahefter, eller enkle håndbøker. Disse vil inneholde anbefalinger og praktiske protokoller for A) Bruk av sensorer, instrumentering og hurtigmetoder for analyse av biomassesammensetning og kvalitet, og B) Valg av konserveringsmetode.

In QualiSea, factors that affect the stability and quality of fresh biomass are studied, and methods for characterisation of fresh and stored biomass are assessed, with the aim to develop cost- and energy efficient preservation methods for the biomass. Since the proposal was prepared, the challenges that the project aims to solve, has become even more urgent for the seaweed farmers. Since parts of the results from the QualiSea project have a high applied and practical impact for the seaweed farmers, these results should be shared and disseminated in a targeted way. 
QualiSea_Diss will significantly expand the dissemination of the applied aspects of the project. Specifically, we will produce two handbooks that will contain recommendations and practical protocols for A) Use of sensors, instrumentation, and rapid analytical methods for assessing the biomass composition and quality; and B) Choice of preservation methods.

CLEANHYPRO gathers some of the most recognised experts in Europe on the electrolysis field for clean hydrogen production and acknowledged facilitators of technology transfer, corporate finance, funding and coaching, making available (i) the most promising and breakthrough manufacturing pilots and (ii) advanced characterization techniques and modelling together with (iii) non-technical services through this Test Bed: while relevant improvement metrics can be defined, the potential network of reachable stakeholders counts thousands of businesses on an international scale. Key facts are reported below. Within the scope of CLEANHYPRO, several circular innovative materials and key components, four main electrolysis technologies and geometries will be covered, providing for the first time a single entry point for industrial partners, mainly SMEs, aspiring to answer their concerns but with minimum investment costs and reduction of risks associated with technology transfer, while opening-up opportunities for demonstration of materials and components (TRL7) and thus faster opening the market for these new products. The main KPIs for CLEANHYPRO: Technical: >20% cell productivity improvement, 30% faster verification, 27-58% and 22-79% cost reduction of technologies in CAPEX and OPEX respectively, 3-9% efficiency enhancement. Non-Technical: 4 Showcases, 4 certification schemes, =16 Democases, >100 reachable SMEs and > 300 reachable investors. INNOMEM stems from the consideration that the development of products based on key materials and components for electrolysis require access to finance and an optimised business planning, relying on a sound prior analysis of the market, of the economic impacts and capacity of a company. The project aims at developing and organizing a sustainable Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) for electrolysis materials and components for different applications. The OITB will also offer a network of facilities and services through a SEP to companies.

I FreshARC-prosjektet studerer vi hvordan hav- og klimaendringer påvirker transport av ferskvann og havis fra Polhavet til Nordatlanteren. Siden 1990 har tilføring av ferskvann til Polhavet økt samtidig som havisutbredelsen har minket. Store mengder av ferskvann som flyter fra Polhavet mot sør kan påvirke havsirkulasjon i Nord-Atlanterhavet fordi ferskvann er lettere enn salt sjøvann. Hvis havsirkulasjon i Nord-Atlanterhavet endres på grunn av uvanlig store menger tilføring av ferskvann fra nord, kan dette påvirke både været og klima i Europa. Vi skal undersøke hvor mye den totale mengden av ferskvann i havet og havis (som er også ferskvann) gjennom Framstredet (havområdet mellom Svalbard og Grønland) har endret seg de siste tiårene. De store endringene i Polhavet kan ha økt ferskvannstrømningen sørover. Samtidig er havisen i Polhavet både tynnere og mindre utbredt enn for få år siden, og det kan ha minket andelen av ferskvann fra havis.
I FreshARC benytter vi et unikt datasett fra "Arctic Outflow Observatory" i Framstredet. Dette er rigger med måleinstrument som har vært plassert i havet siden 1997 og løpende målt strømninger, saltinnhold og havistykkelse året rundt. Vi kombinerer både historiske data fra tidlig på 1990-tallet og nyere data fra riggene frem til 2020. I denne tidsserien studerer vi endringer, trender og variasjoner i eksporten av ferskvann og havis gjennom 30 år.

Følgende millepæler av prosjektet er nådd: alle data samlet fra rigger som var tatt opp på toktene til Framstredet i september 2019 og august-september 2020 er prosessert. Tidsserier fra ferskvanntransport i Øst-Grønlandstrømmen har blitt oppdatert og analysert frem til august 2019 i WP1. En forskningsartikkel om dette er publisert i Journal of Geophys. Res.-Oceans (Karpouzoglou et al., 2022). På grunn av flere nye instrumenter som var installert på riggene i de siste årene var en ny metode nødvendig å sette sammen alle data til en konsistent tidsserie, som ikke er avhengig av antall instrumenter. Artikkelen som beskriver den nye metoden og analysen for tidsrommet mellom 2003 og 2019 viser følgende: 1) ferskvanntransport i Framstredet har minket siden 2015, 2) dette var på grunn av en minking av strømhastighet og ferskvannmengder, 3) tykkelsen av polhavsvannet og dens østlige rekkevide har generelt blitt mindre over de siste 10 årene. En studie av ferskvannstransport på den brede Øst-Grønlandssokkelen viser at det er et betydelig bidrag fra strømmen på sokkelen spesielt om vinteren, og det kan doble estimatene fra langtidsmåliner fra rigger på sokkelskråningen. En kort artikkel om disse resultatene er sendt til Geophys. Res. Lett. i høst 2022. Den siste oppgaven med å kvantifisere regionale versus oppstrøms drivere for ferskvanns- og volumtransporten i Øst-Grønlandsstrømmen pågår for tiden og er planlagt å bli sendt inn i Q2 i 2023 (WP1 og WP3).

Artikkelen som beskriver resultater fra havistransporten mellom 1992 og 2018 er publisert i tidsskriftet Nature Communications (Sumata et al. 2022) i WP2. Artikkelen beskriver hvordan havistranporten har minket, og spesielt hva som skjedde i 2018, da det var minimal havistransport, relatert til sørlige vinder,  kombinert med fortsatt minkende istykkelse. En annen artikkel i WP2 er til vurdering i Nature og mindre revisjoner blir gjennomført nå mot slutten av 2022. Denne artikkelen beskriver hvordan havisens tykkelse i Framstredet ble gjenstand for et regimeskifte i 2007 og hvordan dette er relatert til pan-arktiske endringer. En enkel modell viser hvordan skiftet kan forklares med kortere oppholdstid for isflak i Arktis siden 2005-2007. I tillegg undersøkes havishastighetsdata innhentet fra fortøyd instrumentering fra 1996-2004 vs 2015-2019 med hensyn til endringer (dvs. reduksjon) i havisdekke og tykkelse, og dette sammenlignes med en satellittavledet tidsserie for havisdrift som brukes til å beregne havisens volumtransport som beskrevet ovenfor. Resultatene vil bidra til å evaluere skjevheter i fjernmålingsprodukter.

Til slutt pågår arbeidet med de historiske dataene med tidsseries fra havrigger fra 1984-86 og tidlig på 1990-tallet, for å utvide tidsserien for ferskvannstransport tilbake i tid. Det er imidlertid svært få tidsserier med saltholdighet for å gjøre nøyaktige ferskvannsestimater for disse årene. Vi tar sikte på å gjøre noen tilnærminger rundt dette, fortsatt basert på gjeldende målerdata og årlig hydrografi. Dette er det siste arbeidet som vil bli lagt til den endelige syntesen (WP3) som skal etableres i Q2-Q3 2023.

FreshArc quantifies the response of the Arctic Ocean to climate change and delivers a groundbreaking up-to-date 30-year long record of freshwater and sea ice export from the Arctic. The upper ocean freshwater content of the Arctic Ocean has increased significantly since the 1990s while sea ice extent and thickness have declined dramatically. The freshwater
accumulation is of particular concern as a release of freshwater and sea ice into the North Atlantic Ocean has the potential to slow down the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and thereby impact weather and climate in the Arctic, Europe, and Africa. It is at present, an open question whether the total freshwater export (liquid and sea ice) through Fram Strait, the largest gateway of the Arctic, has changed. The rapid changes in the Arctic may already have led to an increase in the ocean's freshwater export while sea ice export may have decreased. However, as sea ice is thinning, the ocean and sea ice circulation become more vulnerable to changes in atmospheric forcing. To assess if the export of total freshwater through Fram Strait to the North Atlantic has increased in the last decades, unique year-round ocean and sea ice data collected by ocean moorings in Fram Strait since 1990 will be integrated and analysed. New, higher resolution, and novel near-surface data collected since 2009 will be assimilated to provide more accurate freshwater and sea ice transports, and will also allow for an improved quantification of exports prior to that time. Model simulations with a Pan-Arctic ocean-sea ice model will demonstrate how observed trends and variability of the total freshwater export during the last decades are related to the large-scale Arctic ocean and atmospheric circulation. Ultimately, FreshArc will provide new state-of-the-art Arctic freshwater exports in Fram Strait and assess its contribution to the AMOC in recent years, essential for the improvement of future climate change projections.
