Eldre brønner, også kjent som legacy-brønner, representerer gamle lete- og produksjonsbrønner som går gjennom bergformasjonene i undergrunnen. For å muliggjøre storskala lagring av CO2 og energi, må disse brønnene vurderes nøye og i tillegg konstant overvåkes for å unngå lekkasje fra lagringsreservoarene, som kan befinne seg flere hundre meter til flere kilometer under overflaten. Disse brønnene er normalt forseglet og utilgjengelige, slik at de må evalueres fra overflaten. For å oppnå dette, har vi planer om å utvikle innovative teknologier som tillater oss å vurdere brønnenes tilstand, overvåke dem ved hjelp av ikke-invasive metoder, samt modellere mulige lekkasjerater. Den andre fasen av prosjektet vil fokusere på å foreslå metoder for å minimere potensielle lekkasjer og undersøke hvordan disse brønnene kan utnyttes som en ressurs istedenfor trussel. Dette inkluderer bruk av den eksisterende infrastrukturen for å redusere kostnadene knyttet til overvåking av væskestrømmene i reservoaret og forutsi lekkasjer før de eventuelt inntreffer. Bedre innsikt og overvåking av slike brønner er av avgjørende betydning for den langsiktige sikkerheten til lagringskompleksene og for å oppnå bred aksept i samfunnet for slike prosjekter, som er avgjørende for å bekjempe klimaendringer.

CCS is world-wide considered a key measure to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees. CATF reports that by 2030, available CO2 storage capacity will amount to around half the volume of captured CO2. As more storage space is needed, more complex areas need to be considered. For CCS in historical oil and gas regions, containment of CO2 could be jeopardized
by leakage along legacy well paths. Without storage in those regions, with well-known and extremely well-suited geological features in addition to potentially reusable infrastructure, world-wide storage capacity would be significantly limited.
Primary objective of the LEGACY project is to develop tools and technologies for screening, modelling, monitoring, and mitigation of well integrity issues and leakage, thereby enabling safe and cost efficient, large-scale storage of CO2 in areas with legacy wells.
Scientific aims:
- Communicate effectively with industry, state regulators and general public on legacy wells threats and opportunities,
- Develop an automated workflow for screening of legacy wells,
- Demonstrate tools for cost-efficient non-invasive monitoring of well integrity and leakage,
- Develop and validate strategies for efficient modelling and prediction of leakage rates,
- Develop strategies for mitigation/remediation of well integrity issues, -Explore the possibility of using legacy wells to
improve monitoring of storage sites, 
- Develop recommendations for future well construction and abandonment to facilitate monitoring.

Field studies for de-risking existing wells and CCS site geology

Intensiv landbrukspraksis og klimaendringer er skyld i at jordsmonnet vårt brytes raskt ned over hele verden, slik at det blir næringsfattig. Med økende pris på handelsgjødsel er det nødvendig å skape nye løsninger for å gi jorda tilstrekkelige mengder næringsstoffer for å opprettholde dens fruktbarhet. I bærekraftig landbrukspraksis er resirkulering av næringsstoffer fra avfallsressurser til verdifull gjødsel en prioritet. Hovedmålet med AgroComposit er å skape en kostnadseffektiv, klimasmart komposittgjødsel gjennom samkompostering av biokull med lokalt tilgjengelige avfallskilder og biprodukter (f.eks. tang, avfallsstrømmer fra fiskeoppdrett, kloakkslam og den organisk delen av kommunalt fast avfall). Disse biokull-kompostkomposittene vil effektivt forbedre jordsmonn av lav kvalitet, og øke produktiviteten deres ved å bedre tilgjengeligheten av næringsstoffer og ved å øke karbonbinding, biomangfold og effektiviteten av bruk av vann under tørkestress. Reduksjon i utslipp av klimagasser er en fordel som vil komme i tillegg. EJP prosjekten AgroComposit bygger på nyere fremskritt innen samkompostering med biokull, og har som mål å undersøke hull i den vitenskapelige litteraturen. 
I AgriComposit, som konsortium, vil vi: 
 
1) designe, produsere og karakterisere nye biokull-kompostkomposittgjødsler 
2) teste gjødselverdien til komposittene fra laboratorium til felt i en oppskalert teknologiutvikling 
3) utvikle en database med gunstige koblinger mellom visse typer biokull, organisk avfall, lavkvalitetsjord og avlingssystemer for å lette utformingen av stedsspesifikke jordforbedringsteknologier 
4) anvende livssyklusanalyse, vurdere kostnadseffektivitet og miljørisiko for å vurdere teknologienes effektivitet og potensielle ulemper, og 
5) skape arenaer for implementering av de nye gjødselteknologiene i landbruket. 
 
Prosjektet vil ta for seg fem av FNs bærekraftsmål, og vil være et avgjørende skritt mot bærekraftig landbrukspraksis.

In a climate-smart agriculture, it is necessary to recycle waste resources, however currently still only a small proportion of all organic wastes is recycled back into the soil. The main goal of the Agrocomposit project is to develop site-specific soil improvement technologies applying composite soil amendments produced from region-specific organic wastes and by-products. The composites will be suitable for the effective improvement of low-quality soils and their productivity focusing on the enhancement of nutrient availability, water use efficiency under drought stress, carbon sequestration and improving biodiversity. The project will primarily focus on co-composting biochar and various organic wastes, such as kelp, aquaculture waste streams, 
sewage sludge, and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, which are produced in large quantities in the participant countries but are not effectively utilized. The European consortium will: 1) produce and characterize biochar-compost composite fertilisers 2) using a scale-up approach, test the efficacy of composites in lab-scale, greenhouse pot, and field scale studies against commercially available fertilizers 3) carry out Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and assess the benefits of the technology in terms of climate mitigation, economic outcomes and assess the environmental risks 4) Establish multiple channels of dissemination to implement the new approach of utilizing locally available waste to create fertilizers. The project will support the transition towards a sustainable circular economy and answer six UN SDGs.
NIBIO in Norway will work closely together with the European consortium to help connect the aquaculture/marine industries with agriculture and create a waste-based innovative fertilizer - from co-composting e.g. fish sludge,  kelp residues or other locally available wastes - that can sustain national food production and is less affected by geopolitical disruptions than mineral fertilizers.

Biochar-compost composites for supporting site-specific soil agro-ecosystem functions and climate change mitigation

For tidlig fødsel (<37 svangerskapsuke) rammer 15 millioner barn årlig (11%). 1-2% er født svært for tidlig (very preterm; VP; <32 uker) eller med svært lav fødselsvekt (very low birth weight; VLBW; < 1500g). Forbedret overlevelse siden 1960-tallet blant VP/VLBW barn i høyinntektsland har gjort at i Europa alene er det over 1 millioner barn som har overlevd for tidlig fødsel og som nå er voksne. Retinopati hos for tidlig fødte, (Retinopathy of prematurity; ROP), forklarer bare en liten andel av de synsvansker som kan oppstå etter for tidlig fødsel. Vi foreslår at mye av denne visuelle dysfunksjonen kan forklares av det samme inflammasjons-relaterte sykdomsspekteret. Med andre ord, vi foreslår at ROP bare er toppen av isfjellet av en sykdomsenhet som vi har valgt å kalle «Visuopathy of Prematurity» (VOP). Vi postulerer tilstedeværelsen av et spektrum av endringer i netthinnen (retina) og årehinnen (choroidea, både cellulært og i karnettverket) og at synsbanene i hjernen som ikke bør ses på som separat fra ROP, men som en inflammasjons-initiert entitet som forklarer spekteret av visuell dysfunksjon i for tidlig fødte barn bedre enn ROP alene. Det foreslåtte VOP paradigmet inkluderer bevis fra eksperimentelle funn, MR avbildning og optical coherence tomography (OCT) – avbildning av netthinnen. Til sammen understøtter disse data idéen om at pågående systemisk inflammasjon i for tidlig fødte nyfødte kan bidra til en forlenget patologisk sykdomsprosess som kulminerer i klinisk VOP, og som forklarer konstellasjonen av risikofaktorer, avbildningskorrelater og kliniske kjennetegn. I dette prosjektet er vårt mål å bekrefte tilstedeværelsen av VOP. Vi vil gjøre dette ved å lete etter og definere VOP fotavtrykket via detaljert in vivo avbildning av netthinne og årehinne, automatiserte analyser av netthinne ved bruk av kunstig intelligens teknikker, kombinert med elektrofysiologisk testing av netthinne og hjernens visuelle akse samt assosiasjoner til kliniske utkommer.

The novelty of this project is the idea that visual problems of preterm infants are rooted in an entity we call Visuopathy of Prematurity (VOP) that has inflammation as a major etiological pathway and of which ROP is only the visible tip of the iceberg detectable by clinical examination. We have gathered an international team of experts that will define the VOP footprint, search for its (inflammatory) antecedents in the neonatal period, and simulate interventions with the ambition to find targets that can be modified to lower the incidence of VOP. We will apply state-of-the art AI-assisted imaging analyses and international population-based follow-up studies as well as computer simulations for intervention and objective functional studies applying neurophysiology. Furthermore, we will, in individuals with VOP, develop a brain plasticity training program. Our ambition is to pinpoint the site(s) of visual system lesion in this large group of patients, predict consequences of modifying risk factors on outcome and develop a strategy for brain plasticity training. Although ambitious, the qualifications of the cross-disciplinary international expert team that we have gathered, the complementarity of their competence, and the fact that data collections, feasibility studies and ethical approvals have already been performed and obtained prior to project start, will ensure the completion of the project and make success highly likely. Implementation of results from this project will decrease prevalence and personalize treatment of VOP, personalize rehabilitation of preterm birth survivors, and provide a tool for brain plasticity training. These are outcomes that have a clear relevance and large potential impact, and will benefit this extremely vulnerable patient population of preterm infants and, thereby, society.

Visuopathy of Prematurity - Is Retinopathy of Prematurity just the tip of the iceberg?

Samtidig som innovative offshore-teknologier for fornybar energi blir stadig mer og mer populært, er driften av dem i et tøft miljø til havs en kompleks og utfordrende prosess. Det betyr altså at potensielt vitkig teknologi for våre fremtidige genrasjoner kan bli holdt tilbake på grunn av miljøet vi opplever utenfor vår kyst. Wave Energy Conversion (WEC)-enheter er dynamiske strukturer med komponenter utsatt for flere typer belastninger og nedbrytningsmekanismer som alle kan virke sammen. Derfor kan de være utsatt for noe vi kaller for multi-degraderingsmekanismer, som per nå ikke er godt nok forstått til å ha gode løsninger lett tilgjengelig. Denne mangelen på grunnleggende kunnskap og mangelen på laboratorietester som er i stand til å simulere de komplekse multi-nedbrytningsmekanismene er en av hovedårsakene til at utviklingen og implementeringen av WEC-enheter bremses.
MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) foreslår å etablere av en ny robust metodikk med nye og forbedrede verktøy for materialvalg. Målet vil være å opprette forenkle testprosedyrer som er i stand til å generere og validere neste generasjon av materialer for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) enheter, å overkommne dagens energi- og miljøutfordringer. Gjennom den kombinerte effekten av korrosjon og slitasje (tribokorosjon) og multi-degradering (tribokorrosjon akselerert av utmatting) kan man potensielt oppnå en bedre forståelse til å nettop velge ut de best egnede materialene til et slikt formål. Nyskapningen til MORE-prosjektet er basert på harmoniserende små- og storskala multi-degraderingsrigger, for å skape et raskere forløp for validering av materialer, for å muliggjøre industriell bruk av nye metoder, og forbedre systemenes pålitelighet og levetid. MORE vil demonstrere en valideringsvei gjennom testing av multi-degradering for materialer og komponenter som skal brukes i den voksene fornybare energisektoren offshore.

MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) proposes the creation of a new robust methodology with improved tools for material selection and validation to harmonize testing procedures capable of generating the next generation of materials for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) devices, to overcome the present energy and environmental challenges.
This will be achieved by considering tribocorrosion (wear accelerated by corrosion) and multi-degradation (tribocorrosion accelerated by fatigue) in a field highly affected by these degradation mechanisms. This is a brand-new material selection methodology for the renewable energy sector compared to the current incomplete conventional material selection and validation process (DNV Guidelines1). This project will allow the offshore renewable energy sector to reach their milestones in a more resilient and realistic way, giving it an edge against its current fossil fuel competitors like the Oil and Gas (O&G) sector.
MORE’s methodology incorporates the functionality of small-scale testing, up to scaled-up devices. This approach is expected to contribute significantly to directly solving the ORE sector's challenges, making a step change improvement in the reliability, performance, lifetime predictability and longevity of their equipment.

Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices

BRAVO (Barents Sea Arctic Cenozoic Evolution and Paleogeographical Reconstructions) aims to reconstruct the Barents Sea Gateway since the Cenozoic (the last 66 Myr).

To do so, BRAVO’s objectives are to 1) reveal the effect of sediment loading–unloading, lithospheric strength, and surface-mantle processes on shaping the Cenozoic paleobathymetry-topography of Barents Sea, to 2) constrain the timing of the formation of the BSG, to 3) identify the interplay between climate dynamics and tectonics in erosion and deposition of sediments in the paleo-Barents Sea, and (4) compare the development of the BSG and Fram Strait, as well as the regional to global consequences of the Arctic-Atlantic shallow water connection.

BRAVO will achieve these objectives by numerical modelling (inc. finite element and volumetric methods) using open-source platforms of pyGPlates, pyBadlands and high-resolution 2D–3D seismic, well, gravity and magnetic data analyses. BRAVO’s results will be self-consistent 4D Earth models (space and time) of paleobathymetry-topography of Barents Sea Gateway and corresponding sedimentary pathways and accumulation. BRAVO’s ambition is to provide the most reliable paleobathymetric-topographic reconstruction of the Barents Sea Gateway for the Cenozoic. BRAVO will quantify the role of Barents Sea Gateway in exchanging Atlantic–Arctic water, highlight the significance of erosion–deposition of sediments in shaping the gateway, and form the basis for updated global oceanographic and climatic simulations. BRAVO’s pioneering model of the complete Cenozoic source-to-sink analysis for the regional Barents Sea will be a breakthrough for Arctic seabed characterization for offshore wind turbines and mapping slope failure geohazards."

Barents Sea Arctic Cenozoic Evolution and Paleogeographical Reconstructions

Digitalisering står sentralt i norsk bærekrafts- og energiomstillingspolitikk. Forhåpninger til digitalisering handler blant annet om effektivisering og «dematerialisering». Samtidig blir løftene rundt digitalisering sjelden sett i sammenheng med ringvirkninger av digital infrastruktur, slik som energi-, materialbruk- og konsekvenser for lokalsamfunn – materielle og stedbundne aspekter av den virtuelle «skyen» vi stadig blir mer avhengige av. 

Limits to digitalization (L2D) studerer datasentre som fenomen i lys av både global bærekraft, norsk omstillingspolitikk, og ringvirkninger for norske lokalsamfunn. Ved å dokumentere dilemmaene, konflikter og usikkerhet rundt datasentre i og på tvers av disse nivåene, vil prosjektet bidra til å se digital infrastruktur ikke bare som et redskap for effektivisering, men også for tilstrekkelighet, ved å utforske ideer og former for nøysomhet i relasjon til digitalisering. 

Prosjektets forskningsspørsmål er: Hvordan kan begreper om nøysomhet brukes på digital infrastruktur, for å forstå og forbedre konsekvensene av digitalisering? Spørsmålet studeres av et forskerteam fra NTNU Samfunnsforskning, NTNU og Boston University, som i samarbeid med lokale og nasjonale aktører gjennomfører casestudier, analyserer etiske og samfunnsmessige avveininger og utfører internasjonal komparativ forskning i kombinasjon med modelleringsaktiviteter for driftsoptimalisering.

Kommunal- og distriktsdepartementet, Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet, Invest in Norway og Norsk Datasenter Industri deler kompetanse om nasjonale rammevilkår og hensyn. Kommunene Løten, Hadsel, Hamar, Skien, Vennesla og Vågå deler sine ulike erfaringer omkring datasentre sine implikasjoner for lokalsamfunn. Kunnskapsmålene er både ny og politikkrelevant forskning om næringen og dens rolle i relasjon til bærekraft, samt nye verktøy og modeller med relevans for drift og regulering i sektoren.

The energy transition tends to foreground the efficiency of energy-intensive industries over energy sufficiency. Limits to digitalization (L2D) will address this paradox by studying digital infrastructures (e.g., data centers) to explore the socio-environmental implications of digitalization. L2D will develop a conceptual framework for digital infrastructure sufficiency, thus contributing to the challenges outlined in the portfolio plan through addressing knowledge gaps around energy and material consumption and local impacts of data center establishments, seen against the beneficial prospects of digitalization through improved efficiency, de-materialization, and value-creation. Fundamentally, L2D asks whether these tensions imply a need for “limits” to digitalization, and what such limits might look like. 

L2D explores Twin Transition challenges through the lens of Norwegian data centers. We consider energy transitions’ impacts on society, climate, and nature, through the on-going attempt by Norway to become a global hub for digital infrastructure, justified by reference to digitalization’s environmental, climate, and societal benefits. Norwegian decision makers at all levels struggle to make sense of and govern the trade-offs around data center establishments. Through a novel partnership with Norwegian municipalities, national policy makers, and industry, L2D conducts local case studies, studies national governance in a cross-national comparative perspective, and helps shape the emerging frameworks around this nascent industry. The project’s unprecedented access to and collaboration with the notoriously secretive data center industry aims to hold Norwegian industry partners accountable to the highest international standards, and enable leading scientific partners to develop knowledge and tools for improved decision-making and transparency around energy and data center governance.

Limits to digitalization: Exploring the transition challenges of Norwegian data centers

I industriell bioteknologi er en digital og automatisert revolusjon kjent som Bioprosess Industri 4.0. Denne transformative bølgen har bygget seg opp over tre tiår, drevet av store fremskritt innen bioteknologi. Genetiske modifikasjoner har gitt bakterier muligheten til å fungere som miniatyr fabrikker, som konverterer bioressurser til ettertraktede produkter som fargepigmenter, parfymer og kraftige antimikrobielle midler.

De fleste bakterier Imidlertid foretrekker glukose over andre sukkerarter, noe som begrenser vår evne til å utnytte nye bioressurser som sukkerrik tang. Utforme effektive metoder for samdyrkningkontroll.

Møt "AILEEN," vårt tverrfaglige teams banebrytende skapelse. AILEEN er en AI-drevet lærealgoritme som administrerer bakteriestammer i samdyrkninger. Cellefabrikkene vil effektivt konsumere de fleste sukkerarter innen komplekse substrater.

Som et supplement til AILEEN er det et toppmoderne biosensorsystem som raskt gir tilbakemelding om samdyrkningskomposisjon og forhold. AILEEN lærer kontinuerlig av samspillet med samdyrkningen og optimaliserer balanse og forhold over tid.

De praktiske implikasjonene er dype. Vi vil demonstrere hvordan AILEEN, sammen med samdyrkningsteknologi, kan fullt ut utnytte det uutnyttede potensialet til tang og produsere produkter med høy verdi. Denne monumentale transformasjonen lover å omforme industriell bioteknologi og fremme innovasjon innenfor aktiverende teknologier.

Without doubt, the future of industrial biotechnology will incorporate digitalization, automation to improve bioprocess industry 4.0. Over the last 3 decades, biotechnology have made immense progress and genetic modifications have turned bacteria into micro production units that can convert feedstocks into products desired by modern society, e.g. colors, perfumes, antimicrobials. But most microbes prefer glucose over other sugars, which prevents bioprocesses to deploy new bioresources, e.g. seaweed, that contain sugar mix. Attempts to introduce large numbers of modifications in bacteria to extend their substrate spectra have so far failed due to genetic instability. To enable this technology we need to i) develop a microbial bioprocess that can bypass this metabolic burden so the cells can perform complex operations with minimal genetic modifications ii) develop biosensor feedback system in co-cultures and iii) develop control of the co-culture despite its complex dynamics.   

Our interdisciplinary team will establish the knowledge and approach to create "AILEEN", a novel A.I. reinforcement learning algorithm that supervises a palette of strains in co-cultures, each cell can stably and rapidly consume one type of sugar in complex substrates. A novel biosensor system will provide rapid feedback about the consortia composition and co-culture conditions back to AILEEN, which learns by interaction with the co-culture how to improve its balance and conditions.  

We will demonstrate how this radically new technology can fully utilize abundant, yet unexploited brown seaweed and produce high valuable products. AILEEN, with her accompanied co-culture technology holds the potential to transform industrial bioprocess forever, moving from traditional monocultures to effective co-cultures, enabling to valorize a range of alternative bioresources. This radical bioprocess transformation will be realised across the enabling technologies industrial Biotechnology.

Den økende digitaliseringen av grunnleggende offentlige og private tjenester har ført med seg enorme fremskritt. Samtidig har det økt risikoen for flere og mer sofistikerte cyberangrep. Cyberangrep rettet mot kritiske sektorer som helse, finans og energi setter befolkningens liv i fare når de lykkes og er derfor blitt en stor bekymring. For å håndtere disse truslene har EU forslått flere lover for å forbedre både den digitale og fysiske motstandskraften til kritiske enheter og nettverk, inkludert Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS 2), Critical Entities Resilience Directive (CER) og Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Fordi dette er et fagområde i utvikling med lite rettspraksis og annen veiledning, er det mangel på jurirdisk forskning. Der det er forskning er det ofte fragmentert mellom institusjoner og disipliner, noe som reduserer rekkevidden og påvirkningskraften.
CyberReg-nettverket samler et tverrfaglig team av forskere med mål om å fremme vitenskapelig utveksling og påvirkning ved å (1) stimulere til kollektiv forskningsinnsats og utvikle en felles forståelse for virkningen av lovforslag innen cybersikkerhet og (2) bygge broer mellom akademikere, beslutningstakere og industri for å bidra til et mer motstandsdyktig samfunn. For å nå disse målene vil nettverket fokusere på å besvare følgende spørsmål: (1) i hvilken grad adresserer de overnevnte lovforslagene cybertruslene samfunnet står overfor i dag? (2) Hvordan påvirker disse lovforslagene hverandre og eksisterende regler? (3) Hvordan skal vi bygge bro mellom generelle juridiske krav til cybersikkerhet og organisasjoners behov for å ha konkrete og handlingsrettede elementer? Nettverkets forskingsinnsats vil først og fremst fokusere på regulatorisk utvikling i EU og Norge, men vil også holde seg oppdatert på den globale utviklingen innen cybersikkerhetsnormer.

Cyberthreats have become a great societal concern. The increasing digitalisation of vital public and private services, together with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has expanded the cyberthreat landscape, giving rise to new vulnerabilities and risks. To deal with this new reality, the EU has unveiled several legislative proposals that aim to bolster cyber and physical resilience of critical entities and networks. Key among these initiatives are the proposals for NIS 2 Directive, the Critical Entities Resilience Directive, the Cyber Resilience Act and the Secure Connectivity Act. These initiatives come on top of existing and upcoming legislative initiatives that address security such as the GDPR, proposals for eIDAS Regulation and the Artificial Intelligence Act. This creates a complex and dense regulatory landscape that requires scrutiny. The CyberReg Network brings together researchers with the aim of stimulating harmonized research efforts on these legislative initiatives and increase impact by engaging with, and disseminating insights to, key change agents from the public and private sectors. 

The activities of the Network will focus on the follwoing three key areas: 1) creating avenues to foster knowledge exchange with a view to developing shared understanding of the regulatory developments, their interaction and impact in addressing the cyberthreats; 2) creating support system for researchers to increase visibility and collaboration internationally, encourage publication in international journals, and thereby strengthen the quality of research; 3) increase the discovery and accessibility of research on cyberthreats and associated regulatory developments and thereby improve the ability of industry, policymakers, and students to better understand and respond to the threats. The network will run for four years and will bring together an interdisciplinary team comprising researchers from BI, UiO, UiT, Politihøyskolen, TUM and University of Luzern.

Research Network on Regulatory Developments in Cybersecurity

Klimaendringer sammen med fiskepress er allerede kjent for å være en viktig trussel mot hav og marine ressurser. I et miljø i endring trengs det mer kunnskap om konsekvensene av disse menneskeskapte stressorene på fiskers reproduksjonsbiologi og avkom, berettiget av den grunnleggende relevansen til disse livsstadiene for at fiskebestander skal kunne tilpasse seg disse stressorene. Våre foreløpige data har vist fascinerende og underutforskede, atypiske reproduksjonsmønstre hos nordøstatlantisk torsk som dagens kunnskap ikke kan forklare. Disse endringene i reproduksjonssyklusen, som potensielt er relatert til forhøyede temperaturer, kan føre til forskyvning av gytesesongen fra vår til høst. Under de pågående klimaendringene forventes det at forekomsten av disse atypiske fenomenene vil kunne øke hos atlantisk torsk. Konsekvensene av slike endringer på reproduksjonssuksess og avkom er imidlertid ukjent. Prosjektet er utformet for å undersøke potensielle menneskeskapte effekter av klimaendringer (dvs. temperatur) og fiskerier på torskens reproduksjonsbiologi og fysiologi, med spesielt fokus på om disse stressfaktorene forårsaker de observerte atypiske reproduksjonsmønstrene, og effektene dette har på avkommet. Ved å kombinere eksperimentelle, laboratorie- og feltstudier vil flere bestander av den ikoniske Atlantiske torsken bli undersøkt og resultater vil bli sammenlignet med andre fiskearter som Atlantisk hyse og sild, som har ulike vekst- og reproduksjonsegenskaper. Økt forståelse av effekter fra havoppvarming og fiskerier på fiskers biologi er avgjørende for å kunne evaluere økosystemkomponentenes sårbarhet for slike påkjenninger. Gjennom å utforske disse prosessene i Atlantisk torsk, har ANTHROCOD-prosjektet som mål å svare på spørsmål som danner grunnlaget for beslutninger om nåværende og fremtidig forvaltning av torskebestandene.

Climate change together with fishing pressure is already known to be an important threat to oceans and marine resources. In the context of a changing environment, consequences of these anthropogenic stressors on fish reproductive biology and offspring require further study, warranted by the fundamental relevance of these life stages for the population to be able to adapt to these stressors. Indeed, our preliminary data highlighted fascinating and underexplored atypical reproductive patterns in Northeast Atlantic cod that the current knowledge cannot explain. These changes in reproductive cycle, potentially related to elevated temperatures, could result in shifts in spawning season from spring to autumn. Under the ongoing climate change, the occurrence of these atypical phenomena in Atlantic cod would be expected to increase. However, the consequences of these changes on reproductive and offspring performance are unknown. The proposed project is designed to explore the potential anthropogenic impacts of climate change (i.e., temperature) and fisheries on male and female Atlantic cod reproductive biology and physiology, in particular examining if these stressors are drivers of the atypical patterns observed, and the consequences on offspring. By combining experimental, laboratory and field studies, several stocks across different latitudes of the iconic Atlantic cod will be investigated and findings will be compared to species presenting different life-history traits, the Atlantic haddock, and herring. Understanding ocean warming and fisheries effects on fish biology is decisive for assessing the vulnerability of ecosystem components to such pressures. Therefore, by exploring these processes in Atlantic cod, ANTHROCOD project will address questions of the highest priority from the perspective of phenological implications, but also of high ecological relevance involving key principles that form the basis for decisions about current, and future management of cod stocks.

Anthropogenic impacts of climate change and fisheries on reproductive and offspring performance of high-latitude marine fishes

Kystområder med høy folketetthet er uten sidestykke i frontlinjen for konsekvensene av klimaendringer. En av de mest sårbare kystlinjene i India er kysten til staten Kerala, som også er den tettest befolkede kystsonen langs landets vestkyst. Prosjektet C3-eKerala er en indo-norsk, tverrfaglig innsats (forskere, politikere og samfunns-/borgervitenskapelige eksperter) for å vurdere effektene av klimaendringer på Keralas marine kystøkosystem. Resultatene vil støtte utvikling og implementering av relevante planer for skadebegrensning gjennom Keralas statlige handlingsplan for klimaendringer 2023-2030. C3-eKerala vil undersøke i detalj de klimarelaterte endringene i havnivå og bølge-klima og dets kaskadeeffekter på strandlinjeendringer, sensitive økosystemer som mangrover og sjøgress, og dynamikken og intensiteten til skadelig algeoppblomstring (HAB). C3-eKerala vil bruke en tverrfaglig tilnærming, inkludert integrert bruk av satellittsensorsynergi, in-situ observasjoner, statistisk og numerisk modellering sammen med toppmoderne maskinlæringsmetoder. Vi vil bruke den oppnådde kunnskapen til å forutsi årlige strandlinjeposisjoner frem til 2050, lage et interaktivt kart som foreslår restaureringssteder for sjøgress, og varsle HAB-hendelser langs Kerala-kysten. Vi vil kommunisere prosjektresultatene direkte til kystsamfunnene og valgte beslutningstakere via en rekke offentlige møter og workshops. I samarbeid med Kerala State Disaster Management Authority gjør vi vitenskapen om til handlingsplaner som tar opp klimaendringer for kystsamfunn. Sammen vil vi utvikle strategier for å dempe og tilpasse oss de endrede forholdene, for å øke motstandskraften til sårbare kystsamfunn. Oppsummert fremmer C3-eKerala forståelsen og motstandskraften til Keralas kystbefolkning overfor klimapåvirkninger via en omfattende tilnærming – vitenskapelig forskning, modellering, teknologisk integrering og samfunnsengasjement.

Coastal areas with high population density are in the frontline of the unprecedented impacts of climate change. India, one of the top-most densely populated nations of the world has highly vulnerable coastal areas subjected to climate change. Of many in India, one of the most vulnerable is the coast of Kerala state (total length, 593 km) which is also the most densely populated coastal zone  in the entire South India (tropical Latitudes lower than 20N). Urban settlement, industrial as well as port establishments in the Kerala coast reside within 25 km to the shore and hence most of the socio-economic exchanges happen here. The project C3-eKerala is an Indo-Norwegian, transdisciplinary (scientists, policy maker and social/citizen science experts) effort to assess the impact of climate change on the marine coastal ecosystem of Kerala, which will support the development and implementation of relevant mitigation plans through the Kerala state action plan on climate change 2023-2030.
Using a multidisciplinary approach including the integrated use of satellite sensor synergy, in-situ observations, statistical and numerical modeling together with state-of-the-art machine learning methods, we attribute the impact of climate change on the coastal sea level and ocean waves via changes in the winds and ocean warming, map the observed shoreline changes along the Kerala coast and to predict future coastal shoreline changes and inundations, assess the impact on the structure and functioning of the vulnerable coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass, and understand the impact of climate change induced ocean variability in triggering the Harmful algal blooms. All results obtained are further transferred to the policy makers and the societal stakeholders.

The role of knowledge in the construction and regulation of health and education policy in Europe: converences and specificities among natio

This project is a part of a 30 ECTS master thesis conducted at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The fieldwork consists of gravity measurements along several profile lines around the area of Billefjorden on 20-24 of April 2022. The gravity data will be complemented with magnetic measurements. The new measurements will further be integrated with different datasets in Petrel. The project is a cooperation with RIS-11827, where gravity profiles will be conducted across the Central Spitsbergen Basin. Together with this project, a large area can be mapped and interpreted.
