Consumer society’s manufacturing industry has taken on such a massive scale and reach as to make it abundantly clear that designing as an activity and a profession has decisive impact on ecological systems both locally and globally. Designing entails crucial decisions on which and how much materials to mine, blast, drill, excavate, or fell. This project examines how these decisions regulate consumption, and how this under-appreciated aspect of the design process has changed from the second industrial revolution to the present. Design is habitually cast as a catalyst of consumption, whether formulated as criticism or as promise. At the same time, design has long been seen as key in efforts to steer consumption in more desirable directions. In all these contexts, however, design is related to consumption through its manifestation as consumer products. But the cultural significance and ecological impact of design can not be fully appreciated from the ideological and socio-economic functions and circulations of commodities. To better understand how design influences consumption, we need to open the black box that is the consumer product, dig beyond its shiny surfaces and mesmerizing interfaces and examine its constituent parts. We need to study the ecological properties and entanglements of the materials of which it is made. By doing so, this project allows us to observe how design regulates consumption, not at the point of purchase, but at the point of origin: in the mines, quarries, and wells supplying designers and manufacturers with the extractive materials making up the industrialized world with all its modern conveniences and objects of desire. The project is off to a good start. The recruitment positions are filled, and the first publications are out.

Designing with/out Extractive Materials

Design and designers hold an ambiguous place in contemporary environmental discourse. They are alternatively being blamed for causing environmental problems, and hailed as possessing some of the competences that could help solving those problems. Despite this long-standing centrality of design to environmental discourse, and vice versa, these interrelations remain underexplored in design historical scholarship.

Design is both making and unmaking the environment. Conversely, it might be argued that the environment is both making and unmaking design. This conference seeks to explore how these processes unfold, across timescapes and landscapes, thus opening a new agenda for the field of design history.

In the anthropocene, we can no longer talk about design (and) culture without also talking about design (and) nature. The conference theme is intended to stimulate new directions in design historical discourses that take seriously design's complex interrelations with nature and the environment. Not only does design feature prominently in the making and unmaking of the environment; studying the history of these processes will also help reveal how the idea of the environment itself has been articulated over time. Engaging with issues of environmental controversies and sustainable development can move design history beyond its conventional societal significance, and may thus enable more resilient futures.

Making and Unmaking the Environment

This project explores the historical conditions for, and development of, sustainable design. Today, sustainability is a key feature of all design practice, education, research and mediation. However, the history of this 'green revolution' remains to be written. Understanding that history is essential in order to build a solid knowledge base for present and future decision-making staking out the road to a sustainable future. The immense societal significance of sustainability and the crucial role played by design in its past, present and future, makes it a highly topical subject for design history in particular and for research in the humanities in general. The project has shown that traces of a rising concern with issues such as ecology, nature, and sustainability can be identified in a broad range of design discourses, from the UK-centred Appropriate Technology Movement, via Italian radical design and US counter-culture, to Nordic design education and trade magazines. The first two doctoral theses emerging from the project were completed in 2017 and discuss, respectively, key design ideological responses to the sustainability imperative since the 1960s, and convergences between ecology and cybernetics in the discourse surrounding the design exhibition Italy: The New Domestic Landscape (MoMA, 1972). In September 2017 the project managers organised the conference Making and Unmaking the Environment - Design History Society Annual Conference 2017 at the University of Oslo, gathering 170 delegates from 30 land. The project has produced a number of international peer-reviewed publications, and more are in preparation.

This project will explore the historical conditions for, and development of, sustainable design. Today, sustainability is an essential parameter in all design practice, education, research and mediation. However, this 'green revolution' is a glaringly whi te spot on the design historical map, still awaiting its scholarly historicization. Historical understanding of and critical reflection on the rise of sustainability as the primordial trope in design discourse is essential to building a solid knowledge ba se and to underpin present and future decision-making. Given the immense societal significance of sustainability and the crucial role played by design in its past, present and future, the project will also have great relevance both for contemporary discou rse and cultural history broadly defined. Researching the design history of sustainability requires new, interdisciplinary collaborations and approaches, as well as new methods of inquiry. To that end, this project will forge bonds with the field of envir onmental history, and explore the untapped but promising potential of the Digital Humanities in a sustained effort to renew the discipline of design history more in tune with an ever more pervasive design culture.

Dette vil ikke bare dreie seg om indu¬stri- og  design¬historie. Aluminiumen kan ikke bare forstås gjennom teknisk og naturvitenskapelig terminologi. Dette prosjektet tar derfor sikte på å studere hvordan aluminium har blitt framstilt, tatt i bruk, fortolket og kulturelt integrert gjennom forhandlinger  mellom teknologi, design og marked. Hvordan har produsentenes fortellinger og forestillinger om sine produkter forholdt seg til de opplevelsene forbrukerne har skapt i samspill mellom disse produktene og sine omgivelser? Hvordan har designere fortolket o g forvaltet sine roller som formidlere og forhandlere i denne kulturelle verdsettingen av aluminium og aluminiumsprodukter?
Historien om aluminium og dets anvendelse er innfelt i skiftende sosiale, politiske og økonomiske kontekster. Industrialisering, gl obalisering, produksjons- og forbruksmønstre, krigføring, teknologisk utvikling, kultur og livsstil, og miljøhensyn har alle vært med å forme aluminiums historie. Som et resultat av sosial innovasjon og menneskelig oppfinnsomhet vil en studie av aluminium  frembringe innsikt i bredere kulturelle, politiske og økonomiske strømninger i vår historie. Aluminium, på sin side, har hatt kraftig innvirkning på det moderne liv, både som dets materielle inkarnasjon og ved å forme modernitet som konsept og som opplev else. Denne dynamikken ligger til grunn for dette prosjektet. Gjennom case-studier av norske aluminiumsprodukters design og formidling vil prosjektet kartlegge den rolle design har spilt som estetisk praksis og kulturell verdsetting i aluminiumsindustrien .
