Dr.techn.Olav Olsen (OO) are investigating together with Canadian and other cooperation partners the possibilty to construct several concrete structures in Canada.

OO has a long tradition to develop the use of concrete structures both on- and offshore. OO are now working to start several projects in Canada together with Canadian industrial and research partners.

As an example, OO has for a long time developed floating offshore concrete structures for oil and gas production. This has been especially applicable to fields offshore Canada and Norway. In general concrete structure are very robust as they can have great capacity to withstand forces from impacting icebergs and they demand very little maintenance during the lifetime of the structure. This means concrete structures are very well suited for the harsh environment offshore Newfoundland. OO works now with a proposal for a joint industry project (JIP) where several Canadian energy companies, construction companies and research institutions are considering to participate.

Reisen vil benyttes, i tillegg til deltagelse på NOIA konferansen, til å planlegge og diskutere muligheten for tre konkrete prosjekt:
1. All concrete LNG - Lagertank for LNG bygd i betong. OO lanserer nå et industriprosjekt (JIP) sammen med TechnipFMC og er i dialog med flere oljeselskaper bl.a. i Canada om gjennomføring. Det planlegges samarbeid med University of Toronto på betongdimensjonering og Memorial University på prosessystemer av LNG tanker. Prosjektet har som mål å bygge en skalamodell for testing av en lagertank for LNG oppført i betong.

2. Concrete Spar - OO har i lengre tid jobbet med å realisere flytende betongkonstruksjoner for olje- og gassproduksjon. Dette har spesielt vært aktuelt for felter i Canada og Norge. OO arbeider nå med et forslag til et industriprosjekt (JIP) hvor flere Canadiske oljeselskaper, entreprenører og forskningsinstirusjoner er tenkt å delta. Reisen vil brukes til å ha møter med disse selskapene.

3. Subsea Iceberg Protection Structure (SIPS) - Technip/FMC i St.Johns har akkurat startet et forskningsprosjekt finansiert bl.a. av Petroleum Research NewFoundland & Labrador, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency og InnovateNL. OO deltar i prosjektet sammen med C-CORE og NRC Canada. Prosjektet utreder en alternativ løsning til utgraving av sjøbunn for beskyttelse av brønnhoder (såkalte glory holes) mot isfjell. Prosjektet har nettopp startet og OO vil på reisen kunne ha direkte dialog med de kanadiske prosjektdeltagerne.
