Genredigering er den nye generasjonen av genmodifiseringsteknikker som kan anvendes på mat gjennom produksjon av planter, dyr og mikroorganismer med ønskede agronomiske egenskaper. Nano4CRISPR går fra en «transgen laboratorietilnærming» til en «på stedet tilnærming» hvor komponentene for genredigering vil bli anvendt direkte i åkeren for å modifisere planter, skadedyr og andre organismer. 
Hovedformålet til Nano4CRISPR er å utvikle, teste og risikovurdere en innovativ plattform der nanopartikler og CRISPR-konjugater utvikles for bruk til fremtidig genredigering av produkter. Denne plattformen er unik i sin kombinasjon av nano- og genteknologi og er derfor velegnet til bruk i den banebrytende teknologien som skal benyttes for transport av nanoCRISPR-konjugater og representerer en signifikant fordel over de eksisterende metodene for genteknologi. Målrettet design av nanopartikler vil muliggjøre utviklingen av nanoCRISPR-konjugater som kan trenge gjennom plantecellenes rigide cellevegger og membraner for å oppnå genredigering av hele planter ute i en åker, uten å benytte kompliserte, lange og arbeidskrevende genteknologiske prosesser. Denne tilnærmingen vil også være aktuell innenfor andre felt, slik som akvakultur, skadedyrkontroll og økologiske bevaringsformål.
I tillegg til å utvikle nye nanoCRISPR-konjugater, vil vi også sette søkelys på risikovurdering og undersøke uønsket bruk/misbruk ved hjelp av en RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) basert tilnærming. Vi vil også se nærmere på mulighetene for industriell produksjon og skalering av nanoCRISPR-konjugater, med den hensikt å forbedre underliggende risikovurderinger samt rammeverket innenfor vurderingen av samfunnsnytte, etikk og miljø som er relevante for genmodifiserte organismer. Interessenter fra akademia, industri, statlige etater og sivile samfunnsorganisasjoner i Norge og andre Europeiske land, vil delta aktivt sammen med oss i en samordnet prosess som vil gi en høy sosial relevans og tillit.

Nano4CRISPR will generate knowledge on nanoparticles based CRISPR delivery products that can be applied externally to crops in the open field for both agricultural and environmental purposes. The project aims to contribute to the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable food production following a Responsible Research and Innovation co-creation platform. NanoCRISPR conjugates have the potential to contribute to reducing the use of harmful chemistries that create persistent agrochemical pollution and to increasing resilience and suitability of our food system. The main goal of Nano4CRISPR is to develop, test and risk assess an integrated platform for the development of personalized nanoCRISPR conjugates for use in future gene-editing products directly in the field or at point of scale.  Rational nanoparticle design will enable the development of nanoCRISPR conjugates that can overcome membranes and rigid cell walls surrounding plant cells and enable gene-editing in whole plants, in the field, without the aid of complicated, long and laborious genetic engineering processes. Hence, the approach is also suitable for other field applications, such as in aquaculture, pest control, and ecological conservation purposes. The integrated gene-editing platform comprehends a holistic risk assessment approach including the investigation of unintended and malicious use. Stakeholders from academia, industry, governmental agencies, and civil society organizations in Norway and other European countries will actively participate with us in a co-creation process that delivers high societal relevance and trust.

Nano4CRISPR: Novel nanocarrier reagents for environmental delivery of CRISPR/Cas

De to vanligste formene for Inflammatorisk tarmsykdom (IBD), Ulcerøs colitt (UC) og Crohns sykdom (CD) er livslange, kroniske sykdommer som ofte diagnostiseres i ung alder.  En etablert hypotese er at IBD skyldes en kompleks kombinasjon av arv, mikrobiota, immunresponser og miljøfaktorer. Det er stor variasjon i symptomer, sykdomsforløp og effekten av medisiner hos IBD-pasienter. Legemidler som brukes ved IBD varierer derfor fra klassiske betennelsesdempende midler til antistoffer og små molekyler som mer målrettet påvirker deler av immunsystemet. Men, ikke alle IBD pasienter responderer på behandling, og ingen av legemidlene som brukes kan kurere IBD. I dag er målet med behandling å redusere betennelsen, gi lindring av symptomer og forhindre tilbakefall. Fordi UC og CD manifesterer seg som betennelsessykdommer, har det meste av IBD-forskningen konsentrert seg om immunceller. Epitelcellene i tarmen har sannsynligvis langt større direkte betydning for sykdomsutvikling og respons på behandling enn tidligere antatt. Fremdeles er det nesten ingen av medisinene som brukes i IBD-behandling som er direkte rettet mot funksjoner i tramepitelet. Videre vet vi ikke om legemidler som er utviklet for å påvirke immunceller har negative eller positive effekter på epitelfunksjoner. I dette prosjektet bruker vi avansert organoid-teknologi til å undersøke hvordan forskjellige medikamenter som brukes ved IBD-behandling virker på epitelceller. Organoider fra tarmbiopsier («mini-guts») er pasientens egne tarmepitelceller som videreføres i kultur over tid (kolonoider fra tykktarm og enteroider fra tynntarm). Slike 3D ex vivo modeller er nærmere faktisk sykdomsbiologi enn dyremodeller og kreftcellelinjer som har vært brukt tidligere i IBD forskning. I dette prosjektet vil vi også bruke «mini-guts» for å teste for mer effektive medikamentregimer eller screene for nye terapier i IBD-pasienters egne celler. Målet med prosjektet er å bidra til utvikling av persontilpasset IBD-behandling.

We hypothesize that intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) are significantly more central in gut inflammation than previously acknowledged and challenge the view that immune cells should be the main target for treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). Every IBD patient presents with a unique disease and treatment history, and their own hereditary and environmental backdrop. This IBD cohort heterogeneity can only be captured through combinatory analyses of clinical information and laboratory results from real-life biological material or patient-derived ex vivo models faithfully reproducing the heterogeneity. Therefore, the proposed project has a genuine translational approach focusing on systematic clinical observations in parallel with research on patient specific epithelial organoids (“mini-guts”) that can reproduce patient heterogeneity. We will perform state-of the art functional studies and evaluate approved and investigational IBD-drugs as treatment options targeting observed physical, biochemical, and immunological intestinal epithelial dysfunctions. Since research into IBD pathobiology has mainly focused on immune cell-mediated mechanisms there is very limited information about how the drugs commonly used in IBD affect epithelial functions in health and disease. The American Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (ACCF) recently highlighted that “understanding the essential role of the intestinal epithelium in IBD is paramount, particularly since mucosa healing has become major endpoint in clinical management of patients”. The present project will directly answer important questions regarding IEC biology and meet challenges as stated by ACCF. The ambition for the project is to bring forward detailed mechanistic knowledge about the role of IECs in IBD that can facilitate precision medicine.

Intestinal epithelial cells: Central coordinators in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and targets for treatment

Det siste års sterke svingninger og raske økninger i energiprisene har satt søkelys på hvordan den pågående omstillingen av Norge til et lavutslippssamfunn kan slå ulikt ut for ulike samfunnsgrupper. Det har vist seg utfordrende å finne politisk og økonomisk gode grep som både kan kompensere utsatte forbrukere og samtidig sikre andre mål i klima- og energipolitikken. FAIRPOWER-prosjektet vil ta for seg dette dilemmaet. Det består av tre integrerte deler: 

Arbeidspakke 1 vil utforske modellscenarioer for hvordan kraftmarkedene vil kunne respondere på lavutslippsutviklingen. Kraftmarkedene vil bli påvirket direkte, men også indirekte via andre sektorer og internasjonale markeder. Et sentralt element i omstillingen vil være å gå over fra fossil energi til fornybar kraft. Scenarioanalyse er en måte å illustrere usikkerhet på; utfallene vil avhenge ikke bare av strategivalgene i Norge, men også i utlandet, ikke minst utviklingen i og samspillet med resten av Europa. 

Med scenarioene som bakteppe vil vi i arbeidspakke 2 analysere hvordan ulike husholdningsgrupper påvirkes av energiomstillingen. Virkningene forventes å være forskjellige avhengig av husholdningenes inntekt, hvor de bor og arbeider og hva slags teknologier og energikilder de benytter til oppvarming og transport. Til disse analysene vil vi utvikle en ny husholdningsmodell som kan koples til de økonomiske scenarioene. 

In arbeidspakke 3 vil vi bruke erfaringene fra de to første delene til å vurdere mulige tiltak som kan kompensere husholdningene for økte energipriser og motvirke uønskede fordelingsvirkninger av lavutslippsomstillingen. Som del av arbeidet vil vi gå gjennom kompensasjonsordninger som er blitt brukt i ulike europeiske land siden energiprisene steg betraktelig i 2022. Vi vil sammenlikne ulike utforminger med tanke på fordelingsvirkninger, samfunnsøkonomiske kostnader og utslag på sentrale energi- og klimapolitiske mål.

The recent energy price peaks have called attention to how an accelerating low-emission transition ahead may have undesired distributional impacts. A key challenge is to design compensatory policies that do not set the transition nor other energy policy goals at risk. FAIRPOWER seeks to advance the scientific knowledge base relevant to this policy dilemma through 3 research steps. Main outcomes of Work Package (WP) 1 will be scenarios for how the power markets respond to low-emission strategies. The case is Norway, who aims to substantially electrify the economy. The use of a multisectoral, multiregional macroeconomic model system will capture interrelated adaptations across all sectors, indirect power market feedbacks and Norway’s dependency on the EU’s low-emission strategy, given their partly integrated power markets and common climate policies. The scenarios will reflect the uncertainty about how these international political and economic relations will evolve. 

WP2 will investigate distributional impacts of the low-emission transition, both across income groups and across households distinguished by a variety of attributes within income groups, incl. region, job sector and heating equipment, household composition and residential characteristics. The research will methodologically go beyond state-of-the-art by building a microsimulation model with better data, more details and simultaneity. With the consistent macroeconomic scenarios as a backdrop, we will study distributional impacts of simultaneous changes affecting households through consumer prices, investment costs and income elements. 

WP3 will use the results from WP1 and WP2 to analyse compensatory schemes. First, we will survey and analyse European recent compensatory policies. Based on this insight we will investigate how various designs can balance fairness concerns against the low-emission transition and other energy and climate policy goals in the Norwegian setting and under different scenarios.

A fair low-emission transition of the power market (FAIRPOWER)

Digitalisering står sentralt i norsk bærekrafts- og energiomstillingspolitikk. Forhåpninger til digitalisering handler blant annet om effektivisering og «dematerialisering». Samtidig blir løftene rundt digitalisering sjelden sett i sammenheng med ringvirkninger av digital infrastruktur, slik som energi-, materialbruk- og konsekvenser for lokalsamfunn – materielle og stedbundne aspekter av den virtuelle «skyen» vi stadig blir mer avhengige av. 

Limits to digitalization (L2D) studerer datasentre som fenomen i lys av både global bærekraft, norsk omstillingspolitikk, og ringvirkninger for norske lokalsamfunn. Ved å dokumentere dilemmaene, konflikter og usikkerhet rundt datasentre i og på tvers av disse nivåene, vil prosjektet bidra til å se digital infrastruktur ikke bare som et redskap for effektivisering, men også for tilstrekkelighet, ved å utforske ideer og former for nøysomhet i relasjon til digitalisering. 

Prosjektets forskningsspørsmål er: Hvordan kan begreper om nøysomhet brukes på digital infrastruktur, for å forstå og forbedre konsekvensene av digitalisering? Spørsmålet studeres av et forskerteam fra NTNU Samfunnsforskning, NTNU og Boston University, som i samarbeid med lokale og nasjonale aktører gjennomfører casestudier, analyserer etiske og samfunnsmessige avveininger og utfører internasjonal komparativ forskning i kombinasjon med modelleringsaktiviteter for driftsoptimalisering.

Kommunal- og distriktsdepartementet, Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet, Invest in Norway og Norsk Datasenter Industri deler kompetanse om nasjonale rammevilkår og hensyn. Kommunene Løten, Hadsel, Hamar, Skien, Vennesla og Vågå deler sine ulike erfaringer omkring datasentre sine implikasjoner for lokalsamfunn. Kunnskapsmålene er både ny og politikkrelevant forskning om næringen og dens rolle i relasjon til bærekraft, samt nye verktøy og modeller med relevans for drift og regulering i sektoren.

The energy transition tends to foreground the efficiency of energy-intensive industries over energy sufficiency. Limits to digitalization (L2D) will address this paradox by studying digital infrastructures (e.g., data centers) to explore the socio-environmental implications of digitalization. L2D will develop a conceptual framework for digital infrastructure sufficiency, thus contributing to the challenges outlined in the portfolio plan through addressing knowledge gaps around energy and material consumption and local impacts of data center establishments, seen against the beneficial prospects of digitalization through improved efficiency, de-materialization, and value-creation. Fundamentally, L2D asks whether these tensions imply a need for “limits” to digitalization, and what such limits might look like. 

L2D explores Twin Transition challenges through the lens of Norwegian data centers. We consider energy transitions’ impacts on society, climate, and nature, through the on-going attempt by Norway to become a global hub for digital infrastructure, justified by reference to digitalization’s environmental, climate, and societal benefits. Norwegian decision makers at all levels struggle to make sense of and govern the trade-offs around data center establishments. Through a novel partnership with Norwegian municipalities, national policy makers, and industry, L2D conducts local case studies, studies national governance in a cross-national comparative perspective, and helps shape the emerging frameworks around this nascent industry. The project’s unprecedented access to and collaboration with the notoriously secretive data center industry aims to hold Norwegian industry partners accountable to the highest international standards, and enable leading scientific partners to develop knowledge and tools for improved decision-making and transparency around energy and data center governance.

Limits to digitalization: Exploring the transition challenges of Norwegian data centers

I industriell bioteknologi er en digital og automatisert revolusjon kjent som Bioprosess Industri 4.0. Denne transformative bølgen har bygget seg opp over tre tiår, drevet av store fremskritt innen bioteknologi. Genetiske modifikasjoner har gitt bakterier muligheten til å fungere som miniatyr fabrikker, som konverterer bioressurser til ettertraktede produkter som fargepigmenter, parfymer og kraftige antimikrobielle midler.

De fleste bakterier Imidlertid foretrekker glukose over andre sukkerarter, noe som begrenser vår evne til å utnytte nye bioressurser som sukkerrik tang. Skape et sofistikert biosensor-tilbakekoblingssystem innenfor samdyrkninger for å overvåke og kontrollere deres intrikate dynamikk.
Utforme effektive metoder for samdyrkningkontroll.

Møt "AILEEN," vårt tverrfaglige teams banebrytende skapelse. AILEEN er en AI-drevet lærealgoritme som administrerer bakteriestammer i samdyrkninger. Cellefabrikkene vil effektivt konsumere de fleste sukkerarter innen komplekse substrater.

Som et supplement til AILEEN er det et toppmoderne biosensorsystem som raskt gir tilbakemelding om samdyrkningskomposisjon og forhold. AILEEN lærer kontinuerlig av samspillet med samdyrkningen og optimaliserer balanse og forhold over tid.

De praktiske implikasjonene er dype. Vi vil demonstrere hvordan AILEEN, sammen med samdyrkningsteknologi, kan fullt ut utnytte det uutnyttede potensialet til tang og produsere produkter med høy verdi. Denne monumentale transformasjonen lover å omforme industriell bioteknologi og fremme innovasjon innenfor aktiverende teknologier.

Without doubt, the future of industrial biotechnology will incorporate digitalization, automation to improve bioprocess industry 4.0. Over the last 3 decades, biotechnology have made immense progress and genetic modifications have turned bacteria into micro production units that can convert feedstocks into products desired by modern society, e.g. colors, perfumes, antimicrobials. But most microbes prefer glucose over other sugars, which prevents bioprocesses to deploy new bioresources, e.g. seaweed, that contain sugar mix. Attempts to introduce large numbers of modifications in bacteria to extend their substrate spectra have so far failed due to genetic instability. To enable this technology we need to i) develop a microbial bioprocess that can bypass this metabolic burden so the cells can perform complex operations with minimal genetic modifications ii) develop biosensor feedback system in co-cultures and iii) develop control of the co-culture despite its complex dynamics.   

Our interdisciplinary team will establish the knowledge and approach to create "AILEEN", a novel A.I. reinforcement learning algorithm that supervises a palette of strains in co-cultures, each cell can stably and rapidly consume one type of sugar in complex substrates. A novel biosensor system will provide rapid feedback about the consortia composition and co-culture conditions back to AILEEN, which learns by interaction with the co-culture how to improve its balance and conditions.  

We will demonstrate how this radically new technology can fully utilize abundant, yet unexploited brown seaweed and produce high valuable products. AILEEN, with her accompanied co-culture technology holds the potential to transform industrial bioprocess forever, moving from traditional monocultures to effective co-cultures, enabling to valorize a range of alternative bioresources. This radical bioprocess transformation will be realised across the enabling technologies industrial Biotechnology.

KSP: “AILEEN” Artificial Intelligence guided Multi-Microbial Cultivation process

Norge har et stort antall områder med viltfare langs veier hvor det ikke er kostnadseffektivt å bygge store gjerder eller viltkryssinger. Tilstedeværelsen av dyreliv langs åpne veier kan forårsake trafikkkollisjoner med dyreliv, skape stress og skape farlige situasjoner for sikkerheten til både mennesker og dyr. Alvorlighetsgraden av situasjonen er synlig i antall kollisjoner med hjortevilt. Til tross for forsøk på ulike løsninger har disse hatt liten suksess og antall trafikkpåkjørsler med dyreliv har økt med rundt 50 % de siste 5-10 årene. WILDETECT har som mål å samle inn både eksisterende og nye data for å bygge kunnskap om hvor sannsynligheten for kollisjonsulykker er høyest, for å varsle trafikanter og redusere antall trafikkulykker med dyreliv. Prosjektet skal utforske ulike løsninger som samler inn data om antall og/eller bevegelse av viltgrupper, som: 1) statistiske data, 2) sensordata og videoobservasjoner med droner, og 3) ustrukturerte data fra trafikantene, for eksempel. sosiale medier. I tillegg vil det bli utforsket hvordan man kan bringe data sammen (datafusjon), for å bygge kunnskap om hvilken type data man skal kombinere og hvordan man kan forbedre statistiske modeller for å forutsi kollisjoner. Kunnskapen som genereres i WILDETECT skal også brukes til å teste ulike varslingssystemer, alt fra mobilapplikasjoner til skilt med variabel hastighet som aktiveres når risikoen er høy. Disse varslingssystemene vil bli evaluert av sjåfører. For å teste ulike varslingsløsninger, vil WILDETECT benytte seg av Virtual Reality (VR) og en kjøresimulator for mer effektivt å evaluere sjåførenes adferd når det varsles om risikoen. WILDETECT vil også inkludere aktører involvert i transportsystemet, inkludert de som mottar data, varsler, og trafikantene. Dette vil tillate samskapingsprosesser, hvor bidrag fra interessenter og brukere vil bli vurdert for å definere hvilken type data som kan inkluderes i en løsning.

WILDETECT explores and extends various statistical and technical solutions in investigating the integration potential of data and technology in answer to traffic collision avoidance between vehicles and animals. The project aims to develop knowledge-based outcomes for the development of a safe and smart traffic system that can detect wildlife and warn road authorities and drivers of increased collision risk. The project results will be a starting point for developing future technology systems that can be applicable to traffic planning, providing road users with real and dynamic traffic information, thus contributing to increased transport safety.

Energiomstilling for å redusere utslipp av klimagasser vil kreve en massiv økning i fornybar energiproduksjon i Norge, samtidig som naturkrisen bør vurderes på lik linje med klimakrisen.  I tillegg, har vi sett at utbygging av fornybar energi har blitt stoppet på grunn av konflikter og uheldige fordelingsvirkninger, noe som viser at økonomisk effektivitet ikke kan skilles fra fordeling og aksept av politikk. Det kreves derfor en mer helhetlig tilnærming for å balansere hensyn til klima, natur og bredere samfunnsinteresser. EnergyWise er et tverrfaglig prosjekt som tar sikte på å sammenstille og vurdere de viktigste konsekvensene for samfunn, økonomi, klima og natur av økt fornybar energiproduksjon i Norge. Prosjektet vil deretter inkludere disse konsekvensene som verdsatte kostnads- og nyttekomponenter, eller ved å holde viktige naturområder utenfor utbygging ("bærekraftsskranker"), i den nasjonale energisystemmodellen TIMES. EnergyWise-prosjektet vil så analysere i TIMES avveininger og fordelingseffekter av scenarier for økt fornybar energiproduksjon og anbefale effektive og akseptable løsninger som kan gi en bedre balanse mellom ulike interesser. Prosjektet har seks arbeidspakker (WP) der WP1 sammenstiller konsekvensene av økt fornybar energiproduksjon, WP2 har som mål å verdsette konsekvensene for natur og samfunn av den økte produksjonen, WP3 gjennomfører analyser av de ulike produksjonsscenariene i TIMES-modellen der de ulike konsekvensene er verdsatt i kroner eller inkludert som skranker, og WP4 analyserer ulike virkemidler og bidrar med anbefalinger. WP5 er rettet mot brukersamarbeid og formidling, mens WP6 er viet prosjektledelse. Forskere fra Statistisk sentralbyrå (SSB), Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE), Norsk institutt for naturforskning (NINA) og Menon skal gjennomføre prosjektet i samarbeid med partnere fra flere statlige institusjoner, inkludert NVE, Miljødirektoratet, Statkraft, privat og frivillige organisasjoner og et vitenskapelig ekspertråd.

The energy transition will require a massive expansion of renewable energy production in Norway. At the same time, the nature crisis needs to be considered on par with the climate crisis. Further, attempts at energy expansion have stalled due to conflict and distributional impacts, demonstrating that economic efficiency cannot be separated from acceptability and equity of policies and outcomes. Hence, a more holistic approach is required to achieve a better balance between climate, nature and wider societal interests. We propose an interdisciplinary project that aims to synthesise and assess the most important impacts on society and economy, climate and nature from renewable energy expansion and integrate these either as monetised welfare effects (costs and benefits) or as sustainability constraints in an integrated national energy system model framework. This framework will be used to analyse trade-offs and distributional effects of expansion scenarios and recommend efficient and acceptable policies that can achieve a better balance between interests. Hence, the proposed project addresses the main topic and challenges of the call and portfolio plan: “The need for comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the issues and trade-offs we face “..” when “Development of new energy production and infrastructure puts pressure on land and biodiversity, while efficient resource management is more important than ever.” Further, we address the two priority areas of the call in an interdisciplinary way, “generating knowledge of power markets, regulations….and distributional effects” and taking head on “controversial topics involving conflicting societal interests”. Researchers from Statistics Norway, Institute for Energy Technology, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, and Menon will implement the project in cooperation with collaborators from government, e.g. Environment Agency, the Energy Regulator, Statkraft, private and NGO sectors, and a scientific advisory board.

EnergyWise: Integrated modelling of efficient and acceptable expansion of renewable energy in times of nature and climate crises

Europas energiforbruk øker for hvert år, og bygninger står for mer enn 40% av det totale energiforbruket (Europaparlamentet, 2022). 

Ifølge Eurostat (2020) står innendørs oppvarming og kjøling, sammen med varmtvann, for opptil 80% av energiforbruket i boligsektoren. Med tanke på klimaendringene er det avgjørende å utvikle lokale og rimelige lavkarbonenergikilder med lav miljøpåvirkning for å kunne nå EUs klimamål for 2030, samt innfri den langsiktige strategien om å bli klimanøytrale i 2050 (2030 Climate Target Plan). 

Ettersom karbonavtrykket fra elektrisitet reduseres, er elektrifisering av oppvarming og kjøling gjennom bruk av høyeffektive jordvarmepumper nøkkelen til å redusere bruken av ikke-fornybar energi og bidra til reduksjon av CO2-utslipp. Imidlertid er høyere oppstartskostnader, installasjonstid og teknologiske utfordringer fortsatt betydelige barrierer for adopsjon.

Til tross for det enorme potensialet, installeres geotermiske systemer i lavere hastighet enn andre fornybare kilder. Siden 1980-tallet har utviklingen av Energy GeoStructures (EGS) gjort det mulig å utnytte grunn geotermisk energi fra betongstrukturelle elementer i kontakt med bakken (f.eks. pælefundamenter, støttemurer og tunneler) ved å installere varmevekslerrør i dem. EGS er dermed tekniske underkonstruksjoner som ikke bare kan brukes som bærende elementer, men også for varmeoverføring og lagring. Prinsippet er å installere varmevekslerrør koblet til armeringsburene for disse geostrukturene. Dette gjør at den termiske energien i bakken/fjellet kan benyttes til oppvarming og kjøling, i tillegg til den mekaniske støtten konstruksjonen uansett gir. Målet med LEG-DHC-prosjektet er å fremme utviklingen av EGS i Norge og Europa for å både redusere forhåndsinvestering, samt redusere karbonavtrykket betydelig.

In the light of low-carbon sustainable city, underground structure, such as retaining wall, pile, tunnel etc., can be equipped with ground heat exchangers to harness thermal energy stored by the ground for heating and/or cooling buildings, leading to a friendly technology namely Energy Geostructures (EGS). Previous investigations over the decades have significantly advanced the technological readiness level (TRL) of some EGS (thermo-active piles) to a higher 4+ level with a number of pilot sites. Despite this well-known interest, there still remains some technical barriers on the route of the implementation and integration of EGS at a large scale as mentioned below: 
• The lack of visibility on positive thermal and mechanical feedback for the stakeholders
• The integration of EGS into a district heating system at the regional scale 
• The collaborative operation and management of geothermal energy, solar and other local energy sources for a climate neutral regional community.
To breakdown the aforementioned barriers, this project will aim to: - Show the global feasibility in terms of thermal efficiency and mechanical impact on existing complex infrastructure. In particular, the energy production, carbon reduction and other existing data will be analysed to demonstrate the environmental protection over previous efforts. - Provide a structured, easily accessible and clear database presenting feedback on thermomechanical behaviour, energy performance, overall efficiency, durability, etc.

Large-scale climate neutral Energy Geostructures in District Heating & Cooling systems/networks. Funded by CETP2022, RCN Aage Stangeland.

Man0EUvRE will improve energy system modelling across Europe and provide open research-based answers with ambitions to: 1. Develop robust pathways for the European energy system that meet climate targets towards net-zero GHG emissions and consider current policies 2. Provide feedback and advice to the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) of the individual EU countries. 3. Improve a set of models for conducting energy transition studies at European and national level,
which can support NECP generation, evaluation and future updates. 4. Publish consistent energy system modelling datasets and scenario projections at European and national level. 5. Strengthen coordination between national energy plans and EU-wide transition goals. Man0EUvRE will push the research frontier by: • Bridging the gap between academic energy system models and real-life applications that support the clean energy transition with model development, • New insights in
scenarios and pathways for Europe that lead us to a net-zero 2050 while incorporating the perspective of a secure energy supply described in the REPowerEU strategy and the Net Zero Industrial act, • Man0EUvRE will provide a pan-European perspective to the NECP development, enabling joint undertaking with lower costs. Energy System Modelling for Transition to a net-Zero 2050 for EU via REPowerEU

The aim of this project is to assess, control, and manage thermal storage potentials and flexibility at both building and district level to enable the complete renewable, smart, resource, and cost-efficient energy systems. Current district heating (DH) systems and existing buildings are huge free assets to store thermal energy and thereby enable bigger flexibility of the entire energy system. The flexibility can be used to make the heating system more resource efficient, and thereby economical and environmentally friendly. To scale up the proposed solutions, the project approaches will be tested on three case studies and several synthetic studies built on the real-time long-term measurements. The project concept is based on a unique smart control idea to optimize at the same time the demand side based on the variable energy prices and the supply side based on the resulting demand prediction and thereby to use renewables in resource efficient way for heating and cooling purpose. To fully utilize all possibilities for flexibility in energy systems, with the increasing deployment of electric vehicle (EV) and photovoltaic (PV) deployment in the residential sector, this project will also evaluate how EVs and PVs can be optimally coupled with DH (e.g., via heat pumps), as well as their potentials in balancing the demand and supply in both heating and electricity sector.
TRAINING will provide solutions to achieve a resource-efficient and sustainable distribution, storage, and utilization of heating and cooling. It also considers the coupling of the heating sector with other sectors and thereby increasing flexibility, resource-efficiency, and climate-neutrality. Further, TRAINING will also strongly focus on utilization of digital and smart technologies in buildings and DH systems.
TRAINING is a joint effort among partners from academy, research, and industry. Partners from Sweden, Germany, and Norway are involved in the project.

LABCare er et forskningsprosjekt som skal bidra med kunnskap om hvordan kompetansen til helsefagarbeidere som jobber i eldreomsorgen kan styrkes gjennom gode læringsmiljø i og mellom utdanninger og kommuner. Helsefagarbeidere er en yrkesgruppe som utgjør nøkkelpersonell i omsorgen for eldre, men som i utgangspunktet har lav formell utdanning. Det er stort behov for kunnskap om betingelser for læring og kompetansebygging innen eldreomsorgen, spesielt blant denne yrkesgruppen. LABCare omhandler læringsmiljø, yrkesfaglig utdanning og omsorgsarbeid og har fokus på læringsmiljø i og på tvers av yrkesfaglige utdanninger og arbeidsplasser innen eldreomsorgen. Den består av dokumentstudier, feltarbeid og intervju i seks større bykommuner og mindre distriktskommuner på tvers av tre regioner i Norge og Danmark. En dokumentstudie ser nærmere på politiske styrende tekster og tidligere forskning på feltet. Forskningsprosjektet rommer også omfattende feltarbeid og intervju for å beskrive utdanningsinstitusjoner, kommuner, arbeidsgivere, elever, studenter, lærere og veilederes erfaringer. De ulike studiene vil sammen gi viktig kunnskap om betingelser for læring og læringsmiljø. Dette kunnskapsgrunnlaget vil kunne brukes i videre utviklingsarbeid, både strategisk, organisatorisk og praktisk, med mål om å sikre en kompetent og kvalifisert arbeidsstyrke innenfor eldreomsorgen.

Worker recruitment, retainment, and upskilling are interwoven challenges in the elderly care field. Although these are priorities in both Norway and Denmark, the complex demands and treatment of healthcare students and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) is complicating the fulfillment of such goals. A richer account of learning environments, vocational education, and experiences of care work will be necessary to provide a competent and reliable workforce for the future. Responding to the urgent need to attract and retain qualified elderly care staff, a core objective of LABCare is to explore, using appropriately boundary-crossing frameworks, how conditions for learning may be enhanced through collaborative arrangements between vocational education and municipal employers. Built around the concept of Expansive Learning Environments this project proposes an interdisciplinary, comparative study that extends across demographic and national boundaries. A multi-case-study design, which uses several data sources and methods, is employed for cross-site comparison. The key sites of the study are the learning environments in and across vocational education and elderly care workplaces, and the research, involving document studies, fieldwork, and interviews, will be conducted in 6 municipalities across 3 regions: Nordland, Oslo, and 1 Danish region. By utilising the Expansive-Restrictive Framework from Fuller & Unwin (2004), LABCare will newly identify policy and organisational elements that shape student/LPN motivation and learning, investigate synergies between the personal engagement of students/LPNs and the development of elderly care education and organisations, and ultimately provide a novel analytical framework for evaluating the quality of learning environments pertaining to care work. The findings will be of critical relevance to several development initiatives – strategic, managerial, practical – that endeavour to secure a competent and qualified elderly care workforce.

Learning across boundaries in elderly care (LABCare): Enabling expansive learning in and across vocational education and workplace practices

CONCERTO aims to provide the means to maximize the opportunities for CO2 reduction and to introduce non-CO2 impact management in daily operations. The goal is to reach TRL6 processes and tools that allow the ecosystem to achieve more eco-friendly trajectories and thus higher climate impact reduction without requiring major changes on legacy ATM and airlines systems.   To do so, two specific objectives are declined for CONCERTO. The first one focuses on CO2 emissions reduction when the second one introduces non-CO2 climate impact reduction mitigation means. Finally, as CONCERTO is a data driven project, generating data on CO2 and non-CO2 effects and opportunities at TMA, ATSU and possibly network level, the project presents the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of european environmental performances dashboards. Ambition #1- Keep the pace on CO2 emissions reduction, integrate Green ATC capacity in ATM processes, with the appropriate level of automation, and support ATM actors in balancing permanently regularity and environmental performance at local and network level.  Ambition #2- By leveraging state-of-the-art climate science, allow ATM actors to take their “eco-responsibility” to the next level  Ambition #3- Strengthen cooperation, anticipation and exchange of information between NM, Air Traffic Control, Airlines and Flight Planning Service providers.  Ambition #4- Demonstrate that mitigation measures such as the eco-friendly orchestrator and ECHO area avoidance concepts can be deployed progressively at network level, in close connection with scientific progress

PJ.05-W2 Digital technologies for Tower - SESAR-IR-VLD-WAVE2-05-2019 deals with two Solutions: Solution 35: "Multiple Remote Tower and Remote Tower centre" and with solution 97: "HMI Interaction modes for Airport Tower". 14 SESAR members (in sum 31 legal beneficiaries) showed interest in these solutions. For solution 35 cost-effectiveness is the principal key performance area (KPA). It proposes the development of a remotely provided aerodrome air traffic service by a "multiple" and/or "center" setting. Those settings help to combine ATS services from various aerodromes in a centralized control room  independent on airport location in order to make use of the valuable resource ATS provider more efficiently. In the end, the passengers will benefit from by a better passenger comfort in terms of shorter travel times and better point to point connections. PJ05 will bring the multiple/center concept to such a matured level ready for industrialization.  PJ05-Solution 97 aims to validate, in different Airport operating environments, innovative HMI modes and associated technologies. Those solutions are expected to positively contribute to the Safety and HP KPAs with reduced Controllers’ head down time and workload, as well as increased situation awareness and controllers' productivity. The PJ05-W2 DTT attracted plenty of European organisations to participate: ANSPs, industries, R&D and airport stakeholder intends to provide their specific competences to broaden the operational needs and technological expertises. The PJ05 variety of partners and validation activities will help to adequately reflect the variety of operational needs and technical solutions which in the end of the project will consolidate into a harmonized and widely accepted SESAR2020 PJ05 solution. The complete work is structured in a very collaborative way throughout all work packages and will ensure the transfer of knowledge and know-how between all participants and external to SESAR2020 projects. 

PJ05-W2 Digital Technologies for Tower

According to EUROCONTROL’s 2013 Challenges of Growth Report, Air traffic in the ECAC region is forecast to increase by 50% between 2012-2035 (most-likely scenario). Air traffic diversity is expected to become even more complex with the emergence of Remotely Piloted aircraft Systems (RPAS) and the multi-task nature of military aerial missions. The extension of free route operations will also imply more complex and dynamic traffic patterns. Network Operations will have to become more flexible and adaptable, allowing effective balance between capacity, mission effectiveness, flight efficiency and environmental requirements on one hand, and the diversity of user requirements on the other. PJ08 Advanced Airspace Management (AAM) brings key European aviation industry partners combining the right expertise and investment to address this challenge. Aligned with the ATM Master Plan, AAM Partners focus on Dynamic Airspace Configurations (DAC) and Dynamic Mobile Areas (DMA).  Compared to today’s airspace scenarios, which by their nature are static, DAC/DMA enable flexible solutions that can be dynamically adapted to traffic demand to respond to different regional/local performance objectives, which may vary in time and place. AAM Partners will further elaborate the definition of DAC/DMA, the associated data models and operational processes, validate the operational feasibility and assess the performance impact. The readiness for integration of the DAC operational process in the DCB process will be as well addressed. Automated tools to generate optimum sector design and configurations, as well as DMA optimal location and volume to meet performance targets will be developed. AAM supports the SESAR Deployment regulation and addresses European concerns on economic (more efficient use of ATM Network resources) and environmental sustainability (reduced fuel burn and emissions) of Air Transport system giving Civil and Military Users the ability to optimise their operations.

Advanced Airspace Management

Cost-effectiveness, clearly described in the topic SESAR.IR-VLD.Wave1-08-2015 as the main key performance area (KPA), is the principal KPA addressed by “PJ05 Remote Tower” project. It proposes the development of a remotely provided aerodrome air traffic service by a "multiple" and/or "center" setting. Those settings help to combine ATS services from various aerodromes in a centralized control room  independent on airport location in order to make use of the valuable resource ATS provider more efficiently. “Single” remote tower settings have already been deployed in former project, but most significant impacts in cost-effectiveness are to be expected with multiple and/or center settings that was only partly covered so far and needs immediate development effort to deploy it short term. PJ05 will bring the multiple/center concept to a higher matured level. In the end, the passengers will benefit from: More cost-effective aerodrome ATS would allow rural, less frequented airports to work cost-effective and to keep them in operations or even to increase the service levels for more day hours operations or even to upgrade non-controlled to controlled airports. All this would contribute to a better passenger comfort in terms of shorter travel times and better point to point connections. The PJ05 aim attracted plenty of European organisations to participate: ANSPs, industries, R&D and airport stakeholder intends to provide their specific competences to broaden the operational needs and technological expertises. The PJ05 variety of partners and validation activities will help to adequately reflect the variety of operational needs and technical solutions which in the end of the project will consolidate into a harmonized and widely accepted SESAR2020 PJ05 solution. Remote Tower for Multiple Airports

SESAR 2020 Programme aims to modernise and harmonise the European ATM System from operational and technological perspective. It will develop and validate different ATM solutions that will contribute to achieving its high level performance objectives. In this complex context, it is crucial to have a transversal activity that generates a consolidated big picture of the future European ATM System – the SESAR 2020 Concept of Operations, the High Level Architecture options, Services and the associated performance results. In SESAR2020 this important task will be under the responsibility of PJ19 – Content Integration. The other main task of the PJ19 will be to provide steering guidance, principles and frameworks to support and facilitate the production and the integration of the content produced by SESAR2020 Solution and Enabling projects. It will enable the assessment of the overall performance of the SESAR Solutions brought together against the performance improvements expectations. It will provide the main input for the future updates of the European ATM Master Plan. PJ19 will bring together 16 partners. The broad representation of experts from the European Air Navigation Service Providers, Airports, Airborne and Ground industries and Network Manager will provide the necessary skills to successfully and efficiently carry out the project tasks and to meet the expectations of the SJU. PJ19 will produce a set of deliverables that consolidate the SESAR2020 Programme outcomes and provide an integrated reference material on a yearly basis. All these tasks will be performed in collaboration with all SESAR 2020 projects throughout an interactive, continuous and iterative process on all aspects of content integration. PJ19 deliverables will support the SJU to assess the maturity of the SESAR Solutions for delivery to the SESAR Deployment Manager, to monitor the SESAR2020 Programme execution and to support the SJU decision making.

Controller Working Position / Human Machine Interface - CWP/HMI

PJ.16 project aims to reduce development and operating costs of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP). These savings will ultimately benefit airlines and their customers. It achieves this by delivering the ATM Master Plan goals (defined by the European Air Traffic Management (ATM) community) for a more efficient deployment of human resources,  a progressive increase in automation support, the implementation of virtualisation technologies and  the use of standardised and interoperable systems whilst increasing the safety level.   Within the PJ16 proposal, there are two innovative solutions: The first solution develops a concept for separating the Controller Working Position (CWP) from the datacentre where the data is produced. This lean and efficient use of ANSP infrastructure tackles the issues presented by fragmented European ATM systems and country-specific architectures, enabling Europe to move to an interoperable, cost-effective and flexible service provision infrastructure. Decoupling of the CWPs should enable a more efficient use of the most valuable and expensive resource, the human. By enabling increased flexibility the ANSPs should better manage staffing for prevailing traffic conditions and assure service continuity.   The second solution deals with new methods of controller interaction with the Human Machine Interface (HMI), applying mature technologies from other domains to ATM. This will increase controller productivity, reduce workload, stress level and enable the use of SESAR advanced tools, safely facilitating performance based operations. Furthermore, the use of modern thin client technology and the processes for developing HMI solutions are investigated, aiming at more efficient CWP development and operation.  PJ16 has expertise from most of the ANSPs in Europe, the major European industrial partners, the leaders of research domains in the previous ATM R&D phase and has an expanded knowledge pool including new participants from Eastern Europe.
