Mennesker påvirker marine økosystemer på mange måter, som gjennom klimaendringer, forurensning og overfiske. Kumulative effekter refererer til de samlede effektene av slike stressfaktorer. Disse utgjør en av de største truslene mot økosystemer og biologisk mangfold. Likevel vet vi lite om hvordan stressfaktorer virker sammen i komplekse økosystemer. Dette gjør det utfordrende å forvalte våre kyst- og havområder bærekraftig.

CLIMAX-prosjektet har som mål å bedre forstå kumulative påvirkninger gjennom datasimuleringer. Det introduserer innovative modellerings- og dataanalysemetoder som kombinerer dagens datakraft med kunnskapen som økologer har bygget i flere tiår gjennom felt- og laboratoriestudier.

CLIMAX vil vise potensialet til disse nye metodene med en casestudie: menneskelige påvirkninger i Skagerrak og Kattegat. Her tar prosjektet for seg to sentrale miljøspørsmål. For det første vet vi allerede mye om de enkelte stressfaktorenes effekter på individuelle arter – men hvordan samhandler disse stressorene ved å skape økosystemendringer som redusert biologisk mangfold og produktivitet? For det andre, hvordan påvirker langvarig stress økosystemets evne til å motstå og komme seg etter ekstreme hendelser som marine hetebølger?

Marine økosystemer er bemerkelsesverdig stabile, men kumulative påvirkninger kan overvelde deres evne til å motstå og komme seg etter forstyrrelser. Derfor kan CLIMAX sine resultater forbedre bærekraftig bruk og vern av marine økosystemer i Norge og andre steder.

Cumulative impacts refer to the combined effects of multiple stressors on an ecosystem, e.g., climate change, pollution, and fishing. They are one of the biggest threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, but understanding them better remains a grand challenge in marine ecology. Modeling is a crucial component of tackling this challenge. However, current modeling approaches contradict empirical studies, suffer from data limitations, or ignore the statistical possibilities arising when ecosystem simulations are run many times. New modeling and analysis approaches are therefore needed. CLIMAX aims to 1) make a leap in the modeling of cumulative impacts and 2) exploit this methodological progress to understand how cumulative impacts emerge at the ecosystem scale.

CLIMAX’s scientific potential comes from a novel combination of leading-edge computational methods and a strong foundation in the empirical literature. This integration of methods is based on three ideas. First, ecosystem models (here, Ecospace) can simulate how stressor effects identified in empirical studies might ripple through the food web. Second, ecosystem models can generate big data about the simulated ecosystem in computational experiments (running the model many times with changing inputs). Third, such big data allow for unprecedented statistical analyses of how ecosystem-scale changes might emerge in the model system. CLIMAX will develop these methods, make them available in free software, and show their scientific potential by addressing two critical research questions: 1) How might stressor interactions at the ecosystem scale emerge from known effects on individual species? 2) How do chronic stressors affect ecological resilience to short-term, extreme disturbances like marine heatwaves?

By combining the best computational methods and harnessing the unprecedented computing power available today, CLIMAX has the potential to set an ambitious agenda for modeling cumulative impacts for decades to come.

Understanding cumulative human impacts in a marine ecosystem with computational experiments

Chemosensation is a critical signalling process for sea cucumbers which relies on the interaction between their chemosensory receptors and various ligands for foraging and reproduction. Although there is a vast amount of research on the chemistry of secreted specialized metabolites of sea cucumbers, and some behavioural data evidencing chemoreception of these metabolites, the chemosensory receptors of these organisms have not yet been identified and nothing is known about the physiology behind sea cucumber chemosensation. This setback is in large part because the scientific approach behind studying chemosensation requires a vast array of techniques and expertise in ethology, chemistry, molecular biology, and biophysics.  Firstly, a behaviour associated with a chemical cue must be quantifiable, secondly, the precise chemical cue eliciting the behaviour response must be identified and isolated, thirdly, the chemosensory receptor of this specific cue needs to be identified on a tissue, cellular, and molecular level, and finally, the activation of this specific receptor by a specific chemical cue must elicit a measurable response on a molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal level. Through this project, I will elucidate the physiology of chemical communication between sea cucumber by considering these sequential steps in chemosensation. With my previous experience in sea cucumber ethology and chemistry, SensHolo will enrich my skill base in molecular biology and biophysics so that the mechanisms behind intraspecific chemical communication between sea cucumbers may be determined from both the emitter and receiver perspective; from signal to receptor.  This holistic approach will be ground-breaking in chemosensation and sea cucumber research. It will enable future research to address the evolution of chemosensation in marine invertebrates and the chemical ecology of sea cucumbers both in the context of optimizing aquaculture and in their ecological conservation.

I en tid med historisk og fremtidig oppvarming av kloden trenger vi modeller som kan predikere de fremtidige økologiske konsekvensene. For marine system består disse modellene ofte av en global klimamodell knyttet til ulike temperaturdrevne funksjoner som representerer biologiske og fysiologiske effekter. De fleste slike funksjoner er svært generelle og ofte basert på gjennomsnittsverdier på tvers av arter og system. Det er derfor sannsynlig at prediksjonene blir feil for en enkelt art eller region. Dessverre vet vi lite om hvor vanlige slike feil er, ettersom modellene nesten utelukkende brukes til å predikere fremtiden, og så godt som aldri fortiden.
I denne søknaden plukker vi ut sentrale modell-forventninger og skalerer dem ned til det regionale miljøet for ulike fiskebestander i norske farvann. Forventningene testes og analyseres ved hjelp av eksepsjonelt lange tidsserier, fysiologiske eksperiment og mekanistiske modeller for bioenergetikk og livshistorie.
Foreløpige resultater peker mot at flere fiskearter er mer fleksible, både fysiologisk og adferdsmessig, enn generelle modeller klarer å fange opp. Disse og fremtidige prosjektresultater vil bidra til å lage bedre prediksjoner, og forhåpentligvis også utvide forståelsen vår om hvordan temperatur virker og ikke virker på ulike biologiske prosesser.

In the face of global warming, state-of-the-art eco-physiological theories and their implementation in global models make sweeping predictions that high-latitude fish populations are imperilled from unavoidable physical-physiological mechanisms. These are often rooted in reproductive constraints, and at the base we find two main theories: 

1) The theory of thermal tolerance windows, predicting that spawning fish (with narrow tolerance) will encounter unavoidable thermal bottlenecks in a warming ocean. 
2) The theory of temperature-dependent physiological rates, predicting an unfavourable advancement of fish spawning time, causing offspring to fall out of sync with their zooplankton food – known as trophic asynchrony 

These are predictions, often drawn from controlled laboratory experiments, and in turn extrapolated to global models. But just as downscaling to regional specificities and higher resolution was necessary to improve predictive ability of earth system models, so a similar biological downscaling to particular ecosystems and species is required to assess predictions at the scale relevant for population processes and ecosystem dymanics.

In this project we will downscale these predictive theories for two test species - Atlantic cod and herring, among the best documented fish stocks in the world. Our previous publications and preliminary findings suggest that these species have remarkable plasticity in the timing of spawning, often opposite to that dictated by temperature, and in surprising synchrony with each other and with lower trophic levels.

Here, we pick key expectations from the high-profile literature on biological effects of ocean change and attempt to downscale these to local conditions for key high-latitude fish species using particularly long and detailed timeseries of biological data, remote sensing, high-resolution water column processes, individual behavioural observations, and biological models of bioenergetics and life histories.

Confronting global predictions with local observations.

Antimikrobiell resistens (AMR) er et stort folkehelseproblem, og blir noen ganger referert til som «den stille pandemien». Akvakultur representerer en viktig matproduksjonsprosess som i stor grad blir gjennomført i kystmiljøet. I global sammenheng blir det i akvakultur brukt en rekke kjemikalier, inkludert antimikrobielle biocider som bunnstoff og antibiotika, sammen med fôr. Dette har en effekt på den mikroorganismene i havet og blant marine dyr. Antimikrobielle biocider og antibiotika er kjent for å selektere for antibiotikaresistente bakterier inkludert sykdomsfremkallende bakterier (patogener). AMR-Aqua-prosjektet vil bidra til å forstå om og hvordan bruk av ulike kjemikalier i akvakultur fører til seleksjon av AMR i det marine miljøet og dets forhold til resistens påvist ved infeksjoner hos mennesker og dyr. Videre vil prosjektet foreslå mulige løsninger for å redusere bruken av disse kjemikaliene i akvakultur ved å beskrive nye vaksinekandidater for den fiskepatogen bakterien P. salmonis, samt å teste ulike biocidfrie bunnstoff for evnen til å selektere for AMR, dette kan bidra til mer bærekraftig akvakultur i fremtiden. Miljøovervåking av AMR er foreslått av verdens helseorganisasjon, FN og EU-parlamentet. AMR-Aqua prosjektet vil også designe en metode for overvåking av AMR i miljøet. AMR-aqua skal studere akvakultur i Norge og Chile for å få en bedre forståelse av miljø- og helseeffekter av akvakultur. AMR-Aqua har et internasjonalt tverrfaglig team bestående av partnere i Norge (HI, Bergen kommune og Fiskeridirektoratet), Sverige (Sahlgrenska sykehuset, Sveriges forskningsinstitutt) og Chile (Universidad del Desarrollo, Chile, Universitetet i Chile, Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso).

AMR-Aqua recognizes that a ‘One Health’ approach is required to address the dynamic and cross-sectorial aspects of the AMR-threat. The roles of external environment in emergence, transmission and persistence of AMR is not fully understood.  The project places focus on the marine aquaculture (seafood) and aims at understanding emergence, persistence, and transmission of AMR in marine aquaculture- human- animal interfaces. AMR-Aqua will study the interactions between environmentally occurring bacteria in aquaculture and bacterial species categorized as being of critical priority by the World Health Organization (WHO). AMR-Aqua project will assess the impacts of antimicrobial use (antibiotics and metal-based antifouling paints) in the aquaculture industry in Chile and Norway on emergence and selection of AMR in pathogens. Further, with cross-sectoral analysis, we will study the transmission of pathogens and AMR between environment, seafood and clinics. AMR-Aqua will thus provide, largely missing, holistic understanding of the environmental impact of aquaculture with regards to AMR and its relationship to human and animal health. Further, it will provide a much needed framework for environmental monitoring of AMR.
AMR-Aqua will address strategies for understanding dissemination of AMR and pathogens in the marine environment and reducing antibiotic use in aquaculture by designing rapid and reliable diagnostics for AMR and pathogens as well as computational models for understanding spread in the marine environment. Further, AMR-Aqua will identify novel/new epitopes for vaccine development against Piscirickettsia salmonis, the pathogen responsible for high fish mortality and high antibiotic use. We will identify new candidate biocide-free antifouling paints, that do not co-select for AMR, for use in aquaculture. AMR-Aqua has international multidisciplinary team consisting of IMR, SH, RISE, UDD, UC, PUCV, Bergen municipality and The Norwegian directorate of fisheries.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the marine aquaculture-human interface, knowledge gaps and possible interventions: A One Health approach

De siste tiårene har varmere atlantiske vannmasser trengt dypere inn i det sentrale Polhavet (CAO) og svekket de typiske ekstreme kuldeforholdene. Denne endringen påvirker mangfoldet og funksjonen til marine organismer, og endrer hvordan karbon transporteres fra overflaten til dypet — en prosess som spiller en viktig rolle i å regulere jordens klima. Disse endringene strekker seg utover Arktis og påvirker verdenshavene og klimaet. Likevel er vår forståelse av CAO fortsatt begrenset. Tradisjonelt har forskere trodd at CAO stort sett var lite produktivt, spesielt om vinteren og i dypere vannlag. Nyere vinterekspedisjoner har utfordret dette synet, og viser at de sesongmessige og regionale variasjonene i CAO er mer komplekse enn tidligere antatt. Det ser ut til at oppvarmingseffektene varierer både geografisk og gjennom året. For å forstå disse prosessene bedre skal SEDNA-prosjektet delta i en banebrytende 15-måneders ekspedisjon fra den nye Tara Polar Station (TPS), en drivende forskningsplattform i Arktis. Målet er å følge og måle effekten av sesongmessige og regionale endringer på det marine økosystemet. SEDNA vil fokusere på små organismer som plankton og mikroorganismer, samt fisk, for å se hvordan de reagerer på de nye varmere forholdene og hvordan dette påvirker karbonkretsløpet. Resultatene fra SEDNA vil være avgjørende for et større internasjonalt samarbeid som undersøker hele spekteret av arktiske økosystemer, fra vannmassene til isen og atmosfæren. Prosjektet har også som mål å utvikle en datamodell av økosystemet for å hjelpe beslutningstakere med å håndtere de raske endringene i Arktis. Denne ekspedisjonen markerer starten på et 20-årig forskningsprogram ved TPS, og gir en unik mulighet til å samle langtidsdata. Ved å forstå hvordan de fysiske, biologiske og kjemiske prosessene i Arktis endres gjennom sesongene, kan vi bedre forutsi og håndtere klimaendringenes innvirkning på dette miljøet.

The Central Arctic Ocean (CAO) endures ongoing Atlantification, defined as a relaxation of extreme Arctic conditions due to increased intrusion of warmer Atlantic waters. In turn, changing oceanographic conditions modify the diversity and functionality of pelagic organisms as well as carbon export through physical and biological carbon pumps. These processes percolate outside the CAO and have strong impacts on the world’s oceans and climate. Yet, our understanding of the functioning of the CAO is limited and based on the paradigm that the winter season and deep basins are not productive. A handful of sporadic overwintering research programs have suggested that seasonality and regionality are more complex than expected and that the effects of Atlantification do vary across seasons and basins. The complexity of the marine processes occurring in the CAO remains to be studied over long time periods and with high taxonomic resolution to inform  resource managers and climate models. By participating in the first 15-month drift expedition from the new Tara Polar Station (TPS), SEDNA aims to identify and quantify the links between seasonal and spatial changes in physical ocean conditions and the pelagic ecosystem of the CAO. More precisely, we seek to better understand how pelagic microorganisms, primary producers, zooplankton, and fish react to Atlantification regimes across seasons and how it impacts carbon export. SEDNA will be a key part of a large international consortium examining CAO ecosystems, from pelagic to ice-associated and atmospheric processes, and will directly inform management by using its observations to develop a dynamic ecosystem model for managers. Covering the first drift of a continuous twenty-year program for the TPS, it will allow understanding physical, biological, and biogeochemical seasonal dynamics to better manage the ‘new’ Arctic, and provide unique datasets for assessing the impacts of climate change over the next two decades.
