Highlights 2007-2017
CEES´ research activities have been organized in four colloquia. Colloquium 1 explored concepts vs. measurements (e.g. Houle et al., Q. Rev. Biol. 2011) and has been a foundation for the sequential research.

Colloquium 2 coupled genomics and evolutionary theory. Our sequencing of the Atlantic cod genome (Star et al., Nature 2011) revealed that it has lost immune genes essential for combating infections. This loss occurred around 100 million years ago in the branch leading to codfishes, and the alterations in immune genes have influenced the speciation rate in this important group of vertebrates (Malmstrøm et al., Nature Genet. 2016).

We also demonstrated that a ubiquitous bird is at the centre of a rare event: hybrid speciation: The house sparrow has interbred with the Spanish sparrow, forming a distinct species, the Italian sparrow. This provides important insight into how species arise (Hermansen et al. & Elgvin et al., Mol. Ecol. 2011, Elgvin et al., Science Advances 2017).

We combined empirical and theoretical work to explore the evolution, persistence and distribution of disease pathogens (Colloquium 3). Schmid et al. (PNAS 2015) demonstrated a strong correlation between climate-driven outbreaks of Yersinia pestis in Asian rodents and waves of plague in Europe, and further that the spread of plague during the Second Pandemic in Europe likely was caused by human ectoparasites such as lice and fleas (Dean et al., PNAS 2018).
Colloquium 4 linked ecological and evolutionary thinking. The work of Voje et al. (ProcB 2015) is a good example: By fitting models describing macroevolution (caused by living organisms) to data, the predictions could be dissected, i.e. narrowing the gap in our current understanding of micro- and macroevolution. Another example is Zliobaite et al. (Nature 2017) that sheds new light on the Red Queen´s Hypothesis from 1973 - emphasizing the expansion of species as the most useful measure of their success.

Ecological and evolutionary processes are highly intertwined. Environmental change exposes organisms to novel selection pressures to which they may respond evolutionarily. Human impact on nature has increased and is of great concern worldwide. Hence, we n eed more knowledge of how ecology determines the course of evolution, which in turn determines ecological dynamics. Understanding how living organisms respond or adapt remains an urgent challenge. 

The CEES shall synthesize ecology and evolutionary biolo gy. The team consists of theoretical and experimental biologists, as well as statisticians experienced in the analysis of biological data, and has broad expertise on diverse biological systems. The CoE will facilitate a broad international collaboration t hrough the extensive scientific networks of the individual team members and by providing opportunities for inviting and supporting visiting researchers. Furthermore, the CoE will provide a unique training program educating a new generation of scientists. 

The research activities will be organized into three long-term research Themes, focusing on yet unresolved issues: 
1. The role of population structuring for adaptive evolution. 
2. The potential for adaptation. 
3. The evolution of  reproductive isolat ion. 

Through four Colloquia (each lasting 3 years) we will promote communication across the various research field, and in particular address conceptual and methodological problems of integrative work. The 
Colloquia will be led jointly by CoE-members a nd invited scientists and will deal with problems related to definitions and measurements of fitness and evolvability, the relation between molecular and evolutionary genetics, evolutionary and ecological implications of genome dynamics, and how to synthe size ecology and evolution. 

The originality of the CoE therefore lies both in the content of the research topics, in the synthesis of research fields, and in the structural mechanisms for a synthesis.
