Training network for tracking and controlling therapeutic immune cells in cancer

Cancer immunotherapies have been established  in a growing number of clinical indications and the pace of development is massively accelerating. Currently over 6.000 clinical trials are investigating immune-related treatments in oncology especially in combinations. It includes both adoptive cellular therapies and immune modulating treatments like immune check point blockade. In contrast, the understanding of how such therapies mediate their mode of action is still mostly poorly understood. In particular, the role of distribution and relocation of immune cells after therapeutic interventions remains unknown. This is surprising, as immune cell interactions are a hallmark of therapeutic immune responses. T-RAFIC will enhance understanding of immune cell trafficking under therapeutic influence. It will open new paths and avenues to treatments, boost their efficacy and help prioritizing the plethora of immune therapeutic combinations. In the past, detailed analysis of cellular distributions was facing technical barriers. Advances in technologies, now permit tracking and visualization of cells in vitro and in vivo at an unprecedented resolution, allowing for the first time studies on immune cells under therapeutic influence. This emerging field of research has enormous potential and key importance for next generation of researchers in oncology and beyond. However, experts in this field are missing and this threats European research, development and medicine. Therefore, T-RAFIC joins forces of 13 academic and three industrial partners from nine European countries to conduct an innovative and interdisciplinary approach combining cell imaging with bioinformatics, cell engineering and clinician expertise. The network bundles recognised expertise in cancer immunotherapies, empowering European research and innovation and ensuring a sustainable cooperation in science and training.

METABOLIC REGULATION OF GENOME  FUNCTION AND CELL IDENTITY

NUCLEAR aims at educating future experts that can drive the emerging field of Metabolic Regulation of Genome Function and Cell Identity relevant for stem cell biology and cancer. It is a Doctoral Training Network composed of 14 beneficiaries and 12 partner organisations including three industrial partners, a training-oriented foundation, a patient support association from 8 EU member states, 1 associated country and a non-EU member state self-funding itself to the level of beneficiary. Given the highly interdisciplinary nature of this emerging field, no single institution can provide all suitable infrastructures and the know-how required for high-quality PhD-level training. To address this shortfall in training capacity, NUCLEAR brings together European leaders in metabolomics, functional genomics, chromatin regulation, stem cell biology and cancer with innovators in precision nutrition, mass spectrometry technologies and drug development. Together we are committed to the following: 1. To train 16 doctoral candidates (DCs) through an innovative program structured in four capacity axes and occurring on three complementary levels to deliver enabling scientific and transferable skills. 2. To guide DCs in collaborative research bridging boundaries of countries, sectors, and disciplines. 3. To address three key challenges that limit the advancement and exploitation of the field and that are the lack of tools to measure nuclear metabolism, the lack of understanding of underlying molecular mechanisms and the lack of targets for novel cancer therapies.  4. To build lasting infrastructures for dissemination, communication and exploitation promoting an entrepreneurial culture and maximizing and extending the impact of this proposal beyond its lifetime.  5. To increase the international visibility of European research by taking leadership in the emerging field of Metabolic Regulation of Genome Functions and Cell Identity.

Complex lipid membranes for science and technology

“CLIMB-Complex lipid membranes for science and technology” is a doctoral network of leading European lipid-research laboratories with highly complementary research expertise and training capabilities, which will allow participating PhD students to develop a wide range of research and transferable skills attractive to employers in both academic and industrial sectors. The research themes focus on the hypothesis that comprehensive understanding of the role of compositional complexity on “yet to be explored” structural properties and membrane-driven interactions is key to developing complex lipid-based nanomaterials that mimic the cellular environment and function as high-performance sustainable materials. A central aspect of the CLIMB programme is the development and physicochemical characterization of structure and stability of aggregates formed by novel lipid mixtures including natural extracts and novel protective polymer/peptoid-based coatings. Scientific results will be made available to non-academic partners to assess its possible translation into applications in the fields of mRNA delivery, bio-sensor development, and “green” formulations, areas in line with some of the grand challenges identified by EU. These objectives will be achieved by combining advanced and complementary experimental approaches from chemistry, physics, biology, and computational sciences. Through close collaboration with a network of both small and large industrial partners, the trainees will receive direct hands-on experience, and will gain insights into how lipid-based materials are used in innovative applications. In summary, CLIMB aims to advance the current knowledge on the interplay between structure, functions, interaction, and compositional complexity in lipid membrane. The generated results will contribute to important knowledge transfer between academia and the companies involved, promoting and increasing the success rate for innovations of grand societal challenges.

Isolating the first ARCtic GIant viRUSes and their bioactive compounds (ARCGIRUS)

Giant viruses (GVs) comprise a ubiquitous and unique viral group. Their large genomes encode a majority of proteins with unknown functions, an important but overlooked source for new biotechnological breakthroughs. Most known GVs have been isolated in hosts from the genus Acanthamoeba and none has yet been found from the Arctic, one of the most important ecosystems in the world. This came as a surprise considering various metagenomic studies revealed the presence of GVs worldwide, especially in marine ecosystems. More studies on host-GVs interaction also bring forth their potential for viral-derived bioactive compounds. Hence, this project (ARCGIRUS) aims to innovate in giant virus research by (O1) isolating the first algal-infecting giant virus from the Arctic. This will overcome the Acanthamoeba-focused host bias and at the same time explore an important but never studied environment in this field. Then, I will (O2) characterize the isolates, and (O3) develop a novel method using mass spectrometry to find potential bioproducts at the phenotypic level from cells infected with giant viruses. The biological data obtained through this project will have an impact on virology and evolutionary biology, likely leading to interesting basic research projects and applied science advances, in addition to increased awareness of the Arctic virosphere, and nature in general. The GVs isolates and publications generated through this project will become important references in the field and open the possibility of collaboration. The use of social media and collaboration with museums will advertise the study of GVs and raise awareness of their role in the marine microbiome to general audiences. Overall, the novelty of finding giant viruses infecting microalgae from the Arctic, together with the training and knowledge acquired from this fellowship, will support my career goal of becoming a leading polar microbiologist specializing in giant viruses.

Network for Cross-disciplinary assessment of Endocrine Disrupting compounds: training the next generation of toxicologists

The EU has flagged endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which interfere with normal hormonal function leading to adverse health effects, of particular concern. Within different EU regulatory programmes the assessment of EDCs has recently changed significantly and continues to evolve rapidly. Advances in test methods for assessment of EDCs are needed to meet these changing regulatory requirements, and a new generation of toxicologists must be trained to support the implementation of the most advanced approaches. NeXED will address three critical challenges in this area. First, human and environmental EDC assessment have historically been separate disciplines while there is an increasing need to use data across species in a One Health approach. Second, EDC assessment currently addresses single compounds while in an environmentally realistic scenario organisms are faced with complex mixtures of EDCs. Third, new test methods for EDC assessment are needed, covering less well-characterised mechanisms and effects. NeXED aims to facilitate a paradigm shift in EDC assessment by training a new generation of cross-disciplinary toxicologists specialised in using harmonised approaches in a One Health framework. NeXED will train its 15 doctoral candidates through research, secondments and training events using an interdisciplinary and intersectoral training programme. NeXED brings together 9 Beneficiaries and 11 Associated Partners from 10 countries, building upon long-standing collaborations through existing projects including the Horizon 2020 EURION projects and the Horizon Europe Partnership on the Assessment of Risk from Chemicals (PARC). The consortium includes leading researchers from institutions with excellent doctoral training programmes who are all experts in ED assessment, as well as industry partners, regulatory agencies, SMEs and consultancy firms. With its complementary expertise the consortium is ideally placed to train the NeXED generation of toxicologists.

The HEPI (Health Economics for Policy Impact) proposal utilise an existing European research infrastructure, the ELIXIR, to develop the scientific integration of Europe and Africa in the area of health economics, and to promote better integration of research in policy processes. Our Objectives for HEPI are directly aligned with the key areas of ‘sustainable growth and jobs’ and ‘peace, security and governance’ outlined in the European Union and European External Action Service’s ‘Towards a comprehensive strategy with Africa’, specifically in the field of population health and health system strengthening. We will (i) facilitate improved policy and research interactions in health economics and financing in Africa, (ii) foster alignment between academic and political infrastructures in health economics across Europe and Africa and facilitate the sharing of resources, (iii) strengthen capacity at institutional level, and (iv) strengthen the capability of individual researchers and policymakers to produce, interpret and apply health economic evidence.   We will establish and expand Health Economics Communities of Practice (HE COPs) in both East and West Africa. These platforms will bring together stakeholders from member states’ policy and academic communities to strengthen health economics knowledge, support the uptake of research evidence into policy, and enhance collaboration on pertinent health policy issues. We will align academic and political infrastructures in Europe and Africa in the field of health economics, and lay the foundation for sharing of materials, methods and data. We will support higher education institutions to enhance their capacity in training highly skilled professionals proficient in health economics methods. Finally, we will promote individual capability building by providing personalized guidance and support through a 2 year mentorship program. 

Health Economics for Policy Impact

NeuroNanotech will train eleven researchers to tackle one of the major challenges in Europe’s ageing population - neurological diseases. The ability to monitor and modulate neural activity using interfaces has enabled a better understanding of brain function and has led to therapeutic solutions for some neurological disorders. Yet, fundamental technological challenges, such as ensuring proper brain tissue interfacing and reliable long-term recording/stimulation after implantation, impede widespread clinical use. New approaches to provide effective treatments are urgently needed.  NeuroNanotech will develop novel nanostructured flexible neural interfaces with highly improved tissue integration, minimizing foreign-body reactions and tissue scarring and allowing stable stimulation treatments. As main innovation, we will develop minimally invasive, ultra-sensitive spintronic magnetic sensors able to record stably without interfering with stimulation signals and avoiding electrode degradation. Connecting both interfaces, we will construct a low-invasive, closed-loop neurostimulation system that integrates feedback signals from the neural activity and provides real-time stimulation of the target structures according to the patient´s needs.  To achieve these goals, NeuroNanotech brings together experts in nanotechnology, device engineering, neuroscience and clinical neurology. The individual research projects are highly interconnected, ensuring interdisciplinary training. Researchers will benefit from training in advanced research and relevant complementary skills, imparted by an international and intersectoral consortium of research institutes, universities, companies, hospitals and social organisations from 9 different countries. We will provide researchers a unique environment focused on innovation and collaboration, with a view to commercial applications of the research results. This framework will open researchers avenues in both academia and health-related industry.

Nanoplatforms for Neuroscience

InSilicoHealth- Training the virtual twin professionals to support healthy ageing

InSilicoHealth aims to train doctoral candidates in the field of virtual human twin technology, with a specific focus on addressing challenges related to healthy aging in Europe in three core domains: heart, musculoskeletal, and brain. There is a two-way transfer between the research projects and the interdisciplinary training programme,  in which candidates will receive a broad education that spans different fields relevant to digital health. A compelling interdisciplinary joint degree-DN programme for 11 DCs is proposed answering four interdisciplinary research objectives, shouldered by intersectoral training components (i.e., academic and non-academic secondments) to prepare a new generation of outstanding digital health professionals.   InSilicoHealth will provide a comprehensive and forward-looking programme that combines research, interdisciplinary training, and collaboration with industry to address the complex challenges of healthy ageing, using virtual human twin technology. The DCs will be actively encouraged to surpass the technology-driven focus and to explicitly addressing the ethical, legal societal implications of VHT technologies. By providing the DCs with a 360° view on the methodological, technological, ethical, social, and regulatory challenges associated with this digital revolution of healthcare, InSilicoHealth is conceptualized as a steppingstone for a sustainable EU-based, doctoral programme on in silico health.

Assessing Human Health Impacts of Maritime Air Pollution

While local air pollutants are well-known to have detrimental impacts on human health, we lack a complete understanding of the economic costs imposed by the negative health effects from exposure to maritime air pollution. In addition, because health effects are uncertain and likely to be heterogeneous due to the non-uniform population distribution and location of ships, it is difficult to design efficient policies to mitigate maritime emissions.  Nevertheless, the transition to a net-zero emissions economy will require the implementation of policies to curb emissions in the maritime sector.  By combining detailed Norwegian administrative data with highly granular geo-referenced data on shipping routes and air pollution, MARHEALTH aims to quantify the health effects of maritime air pollution and to assess the effectiveness of pollution mitigation policies in the shipping sector. These objectives will be addressed through three specific subgoals: 1) Generate high-quality data sets by combining administrative health and socio-economic data on individuals with highly granular geo-referenced data on shipping routes of all container and passenger vessels and satellite- and ground-based environmental data on air quality and weather. Further, I will collect and merge information on the transition from fossil fuel-operated to electrified passenger ships.  2) Empirical analysis of the health impacts of maritime air pollution by estimating causal impacts of pollution from ports. Linked data on health outcomes with socioeconomic characteristics of individuals allows me to uncover socio-demographic disparities in the health effects of exposed individuals. 3) Empirical quantification of the benefits of green transition policies in the maritime sector by merging the environmental and individual-level data with information on shipping routes of electrified vessels to econometrically recover causal estimates.

This SUSCARE project addresses the call for proposals on global health by proposing an international partnership between Norwegian and Colombian Universities, Research Institutes, and International Diabetes Federation, Colombia. The primary objective of SUSCARE is to establish a long-term partnership on advancing “SDG 3-Good Health and Well-being” by fostering the Norwegian government`s “Better Health, Better Lives” goal. The main purpose of this pre-project is to build a consortium and lay the theoretical and practical foundations for applying for Collaborative and Knowledge-building Projects (KSP) in Global Health in 2025 aimed to implement and evaluate a sustainable and equitable Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) Based Patient-centred framework for self-management of type 2 diabetic (T2D). Overall, this pre-project will help to get a better overview of the research challenges, perform necessary assessments of user requirements and research needs to improve self-management of T2D, identify, and engage potential stakeholders, and make concrete development goals and research direction for the KSP application to be submitted in March 2025.

Development of industrial scale nanoparticle deposition for high-performance nanomaterials in thin film solar cells and medical application.

I middelalderen var en av de vanligste typene av tekster som ble produserte av kvinnelige forfattere visjonære tekster. Den hellige kvinnen Birgitta av Sverige (1303-73) var kjent over hele kontinentet, og i England, gjennom sin enorme samling av guddommelige åpenbaringer, Den latinske Revelationes, som ble oversatt til mange folkespråk. Imidlertid er vår forståelse av Birgittas påvirkning i England fremdeles utydelig fordi de fleste av hennes engelske tekster ikke har blitt redigert. Hennes innflytelse på litteratur og religion er derfor fremdeles et uutforsket felt.

Dette prosjektet legger opp til den første omfattende studien av Birgitta og hennes Åpenbaringers fulle innflytelse i middelalderens England. Hvordan ble hennes tekster mottatt og sirkulert, og hva var omfanget av hennes innflytelse? En dristig overordnet hypotese som vil bli testet er at fra rundt 1380 til den engelske reformasjonen på 1530-tallet var Birgitta den mest innflytelsesrike kvinnelige forfatteren i England, med en uutslettelig påvirkning på det engelske samfunn. Samtidig endret engelske lesere Birgitta og hennes tekster for å passe til sine egne behov og preferanser, noen ganger ved dramatisk tilpasninger av tekstene.

For å teste denne hypotesen, kombinerer prosjektet tre innovative metoder. Først opprettet vi en mangefasettert database med åpen tilgang med engelske manuskripter og andre bevis relatert til Birgitta. For det andre blir utvalgte mellomengelsk versjoner av Birgittas åpenbaringer redigert for første gang, i både trykte og digitale utgaver. For det tredje produserte vi nettverksgrafer som kan belyse hvordan Birgittas tekster sirkulerte i England, og hvordan hennes innflytelse spredte seg. Til slutt, med all denne kunnskapen kombinert, gjør vår analyse oss i stand til å foreslå en ny fortelling om kvinners forfatterskap i England, sentrert om Birgitta av Sverige som den mest innflytelsesrike kvinnelige forfatteren. Samlet sett fremmer prosjektet vår forståelse av hvordan kjønn, forfatterskap og religiøs litteratur fungerte i senmiddelalderens England.

Prosjektfremdriften i 2024 inkluderer den endelige versjonen av "DIGITAL BIRGITTA"-nettressursen og grafisk visualisering av manuskriptforhold. Forsker Samira Lindstedt fortsetter redigeringen av Revelations i samarbeid med tidligere postdoktor Katherine Zieman (nå i Poitiers, Frankrike). Forskningsassistent Lotte Devoldere bistår med kritisk kildeinnsamling og arbeidet med utgaveordlisten til Revelations utgave. PI fortsetter forskning angående åpenbaringene i middelalderske andaktssamlinger og arbeidet med en offentlig vendt bok om Birgittas innflytelse i England. Deltakerne til det internasjonale seminaret i mai 2025 er valgt ut, og et innsamlet essays volumbokforslag er oppe til godkjenning hos redaksjonen ved Boydell & Brewer Press.

It is a commonplace that we continue to underestimate women's roles in shaping literature and culture, both in the present and in the past. Holy woman and visionary Birgitta of Sweden (1303-73) was well-known in late-medieval England and her Revelations were translated multiple times, but she remains chronically understudied. Nearly all of the English texts concerning Bridget are unedited and trapped in medieval manuscripts, and no-one has yet undertaken what this ReVISION project proposes: a comprehensive study of the full impact of Birgitta and her Revelations on English literature and culture. 

The main research question will be: what was the reception and influence of St. Birgitta of Sweden, and her Revelations and related texts, in late-medieval England? In pursuing this question by means of a text database, new editions, and their analysis, the ReVISION project will test a bold overarching hypothesis: that from when the Revelations first crossed the Channel around 1380 into the English Reformation in the 1530s, Birgitta was in fact the most influential female author in medieval England, indelibly shaping the English society - and, at the same time, the English also shaped Birgitta and her texts to fit their own needs and tastes, sometimes through dramatic adaptation. 

The original methodologies chosen to tackle this question would be path-breaking in two ways. First, the combination of an open access database, network graphs, and digital editions represents a leap forward in the development of new knowledge about medieval manuscripts in England and textual circulation (not only for within the project itself but for other research). Second, analysis of these resources offers high potential for significant theoretical advancement about how gender and authorship functioned in late medieval England. This creative approach to expanding the current knowledge base fills important gaps in the fields of English literature, women’s writing, and religious culture.

Re-assessing St. Birgitta of Sweden and her Revelations in Medieval England: Circulation and Influence, 1380-1530

Birgitta Birgersdotter (1302/3-1373), bedre kjent som Hellige Birgitta av Sverige, ble i 1391 kanonisert på grunn av hva hun påstod å være visjoner hun mottok direkte fra Gud. Ut i fra disse visjonene, nedskrevet i verket "Revelaciones", kunne Birgitta hevde seg på den politiske og religiøse scenen i Europa på 1300-tallet - en tid da kvinner generelt var utestengt fra disse områdene. Under kanoniseringsprosessen, da "Revelaciones" skulle vurderes for å slå fast om Birgitta virkelig hadde gudommelig kunnskap og fortjente helgenstatus, fikk hennes pilegrimsreise til det Hellige Landet i 1372 spesiell oppmerksomhet. Flere av Birgittas forsvarere hevdet at hennes tilstedeværelse på akkurat de stedene der Kristus hadde blitt født og dødd da hun fikk sine visjoner var et bevis på at de virkelig var sanne. Hva slags forestillinger om fysiske steders betydning for Birgittas påståtte gudommelige kunnskap finner vi her? Selv om Birgittas mange pilegrimsreiser har vært gjenstand for en viss forskningsinteresse finnes det ingen studier av betydningen av hennes besøk i Jerusalem for påstandene om å inneha sann kunnskap, eller for oppfatningen av Birgittas hellighet og med det hennes autoritet som forfatter og som kvinnelig politisk agent. Kildematerialet knyttet til Birgitta tilbyr en unik mulighet for å studere hvordan pilegrimer i middelalderen opplevde helligdommene i kristendommens geografiske og religiøse sentrum, men også for å forstå hvordan de fysiske stedene fungerte som sannhetskriterier og som retoriske virkemidler i tidens teologiske debatter. I dette prosjektet har relevante tekster og bilder blitt analysert for å forstå hvordan, og ut i fra hva slags virkelighetsforståelse, opplevelsen av visse steder og bygninger kunne bekrefte at Birgitta hadde tilgang til gudommelig kunnskap. Et viktig mål for prosjektet har vært å kaste nytt lys over de legitimeringsstrategiene som ble anvendt for å bekrefte hennes åpenbarelser og dermed også Birgittas rolle som kvinnelig teolog og politiker i middelalderen». Resultatene fra forskningen har blitt presentert på internasjonale konferanser, deriblant "The Saints of Rome: Diffusion and Reception from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern Period", Accademia d'Ungheria i Roma (2017), på den årlige internasjonale tverrfaglige middelalderkongressen ved Leeds University i England (2018, 2019), på European Academy of Religion sin årlige konferanse i Bologna, Italia (2019) og på den internasjonale middelalderkongressen ved Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, USA (2019). Prosjektets resultater har også nådd et bredere publikum gjennom foredrag og seminarer blant annet på universitetskurs ved Institutt for arkeologi og ved Centrum för medeltidsstudier, Stockholms Universitet, og ved Svenska Institutet i Rom. Prosjektet har også ført til publikasjonen av to antologier: "A Companion to Birgitta of Sweden and Her Legacy in the Later Middle Ages" (Brill, 2019) og "Sanctity and Female Authorship: Birgitta of Sweden and Catherine of Siena"(Routledge, 2019) og seks vitenskaplige artikler.

International scholarly interest in the remarkable Birgitta of Sweden is currently being revitalized. New attention has been given to her religious and political authority, her texts - the Revelaciones - and the impact that the trial of the canonization had on how the claims of religious women were met by the Church in the subsequent period. Birgitta was known for having visited virtually all of the major Christian shrines. Although her travels have been explored to some extent, the significance of Birgitta's visit to the Holy Land for both her claims to divine knowledge and in the process for establishing her sanctity and thus her authority as a female theological agent, still awaits a thorough scholarly analysis. The present project proposes that the journey to the Holy Land was fundamental to Birgitta's notion of true knowledge, and, furthermore, that her experience of the sacred loci served as one of the principal arguments during the process for establishing the veracity of her Revelaciones. The textual sources and the earliest depictions of Birgitta will be analysed with the aim to uncover in what way and based on what rationale the physical place, its space and the matter of the holy sites were discussed in order to establish the truthfulness of Birgitta's claim to represent God. This will entail a rhetorical analysis of the visual and textual material in order to uncover the strategies whereby the holy sites were enrolled as rhetorical assets. A theoretical framework based on the medieval division of meaning into a literal and a spiritual level will be developed and employed in order to explore the medieval rhetoric of space, and the relation between place and knowledge. The results of the project will be highly relevant to Birgittine scholars, but they will also have bearing on the on-going study of historical conceptualizations of Jerusalem, medieval models of signification and for the development of theoretical perspectives in medieval studies in general.

The Locus of Truth: Birgitta of Sweden and the Journey to Jerusalem

Europeiske og amerikanske forskere har nylig oppdaget det uvanlige oppsvinget av kvinnelige forfattere og filosofer i det tidligmoderne Italia (1350–1700), et antall som langt overskrider kvinnelige forfattere i andre land i renessansen. I den samme perioden sirkulerte forfatterskapet til den hellige Birgitta av Sverige (d. 1373) rundt om i Italia. Latinske manuskripter av Birgittas Revelaciones (Himmelska åpenbarelser) ble kopiert i italienske skriptorier, oversatt til italiensk folkespråk, inkorporert i ulike boksamlinger, og trykket i latinske og italienske utgaver. Arven fra Birgittas omfattende litterære produksjon og dens mulige innflytelse på kvinnelige forfattere i renessansens Italia er hittil ikke blitt undersøkt. Hensikten med det NFR-finansierte prosjektet «The Legacy of Saint Birgitta of Sweden. Women, Politics, and Reform in Renaissance Italy», har vært å fylle dette tomrommet i forskningen.

Prosjektet hadde et tredelt mål: 1) Ved å kartlegge de latinske og italienske manuskriptene og de første trykte bokutgivelser av Birgittas tekster søkte forskergruppen å få en systematisk oversikt over det tilgjengelige materialet som ble produsert og som sirkulerte i Italia i renessansen. 2) Ved å lage en database (som inkluderer bibliografier, kart, biografier og linker til manuskripter og tidlige trykte utgaver), ønsket forskergruppen å legge grunnlaget for en serie case studies. 3) Ved å undersøke nettverkene av mennesker som var knyttet til produksjonen og overføringen av tekstene (ved fyrstehoff, byer, klostre og trykkerier), hadde prosjektet til hensikt å utforske Birgittas omfattende intellektuelle arv i Italia. Et sentralt spørsmål var hvordan tidligmoderne kvinnelige forfattere og filosofer kom til å utforme sin autoritet i møte med Birgittas åpenbaringer. 

Forskergruppen besto av en kjernegruppe på fem personer: prosjektleder, en amerikansk forsker som var frikjøpt for ett år, en postdok i en treårs stilling, en PhD-student samt en vitenskapelig assistent. Etter hvert fikk prosjektleder ekstern finansiering for ytterligere tre postdoker (MSCA-stipendiater), hvorav to hadde direkte tilknytning til NFR-prosjektet. I tillegg var en rekke erfarne og veletablerte forskere knyttet til prosjektet (fra nordiske land, USA, England og Italia).

Den første internasjonale konferansen ble avholdt i Roma i september 2018. Da ble en sereie ingernasjonale forskere invitert til å bidra til prosjektet i en eller annen form. Samtidig startet forskergruppa arbeidet med databasen. Arbeidet med databasen, i form av møter, reiser og workshops, strakk seg frem til sommeren 2020. I løpet av denne tiden gjennomgikk kjernegruppa på systematisk vis bibliografier, bibliotekskataloger og arkiver, og inkorporerte deretter funnene i databasen. Databasen ble utstyrt med kartkoordinatorer, korte biografier, samt linker til biblioteker og arkiver hvor manuskripter og tidlige trykk var tilgjengelige. Slik fikk gruppa ikke bare en oversikt over alle manuskriptene og de tidlige trykkene som var knyttet til Birgittas navn. Materialet ble også lokalisert til de enkelte samlingene og bibliotekene rundt om i Italia.  

Databasen kom til å bli et svært nyttig redskap, både for kjernegruppa og for de eksterne ekspertene som var tilknyttet prosjektet. Den muliggjorde en systematisk analyse av omfanget av sirkulasjonen av Birgittas litterære korpus, av hvilke tekster som sirkulerte mest, i hvilke perioder de var særlig populære, og i hvilke miljøer de ble lest. Et uventet funn var antallet såkalte apokryfe tekster, og da særlig populære profetier (både i prosa og på rim) som ikke var skrevet av Birgitta selv, men som utga seg for å stamme fra hennes hånd. Et annet viktig funn var sirkulasjonen av Birgittas tekster i ulike reformmiljøer, hvor også kvinnelige forfattere og intellektuelle ofte hadde en sentral posisjon. Disse oppdagelsene fikk betydning for den videre forskningen, og resultatet er samlet i en omfattende antologi, hvor tolv av prosjektets deltakere har bidratt. Antologien er under utgivelse av Brill (utgis i 2023), og vil i tillegg som bok også komme som en open access-publikasjon.

Andre viktige resultater av forskningsprosjektet er to vitenskapelige monografier (skrevet av prosjektets forsker og prosjektets ene postdok), en populærvitenskapelig monografi (skrevet av prosjektleder), en rekke vitenskapelige artikler skrevet av de enkelte medlemmene av kjernegruppa, samt en PhD-avhandling om Francesca Romana (d. 1440), som var en sentral arvtager av Birgitta av Sverige i Roma. Avhandlingen er den første omfattende vitenskapelige studien av Francesca Romana, og slikt et sentralt bidrag til forskningen.

What is women's contribution to European textual cultures and knowledge production? The main objective of this pioneering research project is to approach this question by offering new, profound understandings of a period in European intellectual history when women played a significant role as cultural agents for the very first time.
European and American scholars have lately uncovered the extraordinary surge of women writers in early modern Italy, a number that by far surpasses that of women writers in other countries during the Renaissance. In the same period, Birgitta of Sweden's literary oeuvre circulated widely in Italy. Latin manuscripts of Birgitta's work Revelaciones (Celestial revelations) were copied in Italian scriptoria, translated into Italian vernacular, incorporated in compilations, and printed in Latin and Italian editions. Yet, the legacy of Birgitta's extensive literary production and its impact on female writers in Renaissance Italy has hitherto not been explored. 
By mapping the Italian and Latin manuscripts and early print editions of Birgitta's work, and by integrating this information in a rich database (including bibliographies, maps, biographies, links to digitalized manuscripts and early prints, etc.) the project will investigate the extensive legacy of Birgitta of Sweden in Italy. A central question is how Renaissance female writers may have fashioned their authorial voice on Birgitta's Revelaciones. To achieve this, the project will include international leading scholars as well as a network of Scandinavian expertise. The method is to employ digital humanities supported by network theories and textual and philological analyses. Moreover, the approach will consist of both interdisciplinary and diachronic investigations. The general impact of the project is a groundbreaking contribution to the on-going and highly innovative international research on women's political and intellectual agency in the shaping of Early Modern European culture.

The Legacy of Birgitta of Sweden. Women, Politics and Reform in Renaissance Italy

We have collected data on our previous visits to Beijing where we also have reported our results at the yearly International Conference 
And at the Norwegian embassy. 
Data collection, workshops and presentations have been the aims of these travels. 
This year we will have a symposium with several presentations at the conference as well as collaborative meetings with our colleagues in China from bayi and CRRC. This has been approved and accepted.

Gjennom hele kristendommens historie har forestillingen om Jerusalem, både den fysiske byen i Midt-Østen og Guds himmelske by med perleportene, vært bestemmende for hvordan kristne har forstått seg selv, sin tro og sitt forhold til andre grupper. Referanser til Jerusalem og Det hellige land har påvirket det religiøse språkets struktur, ikke bare i religiøs praksis, kirkearkitektur, bildekunst og litteratur, men også i politisk tenkning og lovgivning. Forestillingene om Jerusalem har gjennomsyret den vestlige kristenheten på en slik fundamental måte at man kan snakke om en kode til kristen kultur. Forskningsprosjektet "Tracing the Jerusalem Code", forankret ved MF Vitenskapelig høyskole i Oslo, undersøker hvordan Jerusalem-forestillingene har hatt strukturerende innflytelse på skandinavisk historie. Prosjektet er tverrfaglig og undersøker Jerusalem-referanser i kulturen på tvers av kildegrupper og historiske perioder. I tre underprosjekter undersøker vi hvordan forestillingen om Jerusalem opptrer og transformeres i perioder preget av religiøse endringer: 
1) Jerusalem i middelalderens Skandinavia(ca 1100-1536)
2) Jerusalem i de lutherske kongedømmene Danmark-Norge og Sverige (ca. 1536-1750)
3) Pietistenes og orientalistenes Jerusalem (ca 1750-1950) 
Prosjektet har vist at forestillingene om Jerusalem spiller en større rolle på flere områder enn vi hadde forutsett. Omkring 60 forskere fra inn- og utland bidrar med undersøkelser i en eller flere av de tre underprosjektene. En trilogi som presenterer resultatene av deres undersøkelser vil publiseres i 2019.

In light of the role Jerusalem has played in the fundamental structure of Christian visual and literary language since antiquity, it can be designated a "code" to the Christian culture.
     We will trace the historical roots and multiple applications of the idea of Jerusalem. We have chosen the context of Scandinavia as our test case, and, in three subprojects, will deal with formative periods of religious change: 

1)	Jerusalem in Medieval Scandinavia (ca 1000-1500) Main foci: the process of Christianization (100-1200), Birgitta of Vadstena (1303-1373).

2)	Jerusalem in the Lutheran kingdoms of Denmark-Norway and Sweden (ca. 1500-1800). Main focus: the transformation of the "Jerusalem code" during the Protestant Reformation and confessionalization.

3)	Jerusalem in the eyes of Scandinavian revivalists and travellers (ca 1800-1920). Main focus: the Christian claim of Jerusalem as spiritual heritage, and new access to the real Jerusalem.

The changing interpretation of Jerusalem is expressed in theological and literary texts, religious practices, material artefacts, architecture and visual culture. By interdisciplinary and diachronic investigation, we will trace a vast variety of Jerusalem representations and interpretations, and investigate diverse ways in which the application of Jerusalem and its significations have been in use and transformed in different historical contexts.
     The special relevance of the project lies in the constant challenge of conflicting religious and historical identities, also in modern society. By tracing the role of Jerusalem in the Christian cultures of Scandinavia, we aim to develop historical understanding as an important resource, both in a national and international context.

Tracing the Jerusalem Code: Christian Cultures in Scandinavia

Omkring seksti alterskap produsert i Antwerpen, Brussel, Mechelen og/eller i det nordlige Nederland befinner seg i dag i Skandinavia. I tillegg til å gi oss kunnskap om verkstedpraksis og handelsmønster, er disse også gode kilder - for ikke å si gode bilder - på samtidens religiøs praksis. Prosjektet "Image, Imitation, Indulgence" har avdekket hvordan lokale framstillinger og lokal forståelse av St Maria Magdalena, St Gertrude av Nivelles og St Clara av Assisi endret seg i takt med endringer på kontinentet gjennom import av nederlandske alterskap; og funnet nye sammenhenger mellom de utenlandske verkstedenes arbeidsmetoder og oppdragsgivernes ønsker med utgangspunkt i Antwerpen-alterskapet i Ringsaker kirke. Prosjektet har også undersøkt den apokryft forankrede scenen hvor den gjenoppståtte Kristus viser seg for Jomfru Maria. Dette motivet er sjeldent å se i det europeiske materialet, men bemerkelsesverdig ofte inkludert i alterskap som ble eksportert nordover. Dette kan skyldes den fremtredende plassen møtet mellom mor og sønn har i den hellige Birgittas Åpenbaringer og lokal kjennskap til denne teksten.

The proposed project offers a contextualization of objects hitherto only studied in order to catalogue imported altarpieces according to style and stylistic development or by way of their physical appearance. Therefore, embedding them in liturgical rituals and devotional practices, does not only contextualize the object themselves, but also widen our understanding of how they acted as transmitters of religious culture from a centre of religious reform (the Netherlands) to areas in the European periphery (Denmark-Norway). In particular, the altarpieces will be examined as possible transmitters of ideas influenced by the devotio moderna, founded in 1374 as a movement calling for apostolic renewal through the rediscovery of genuine pious practices such as humility, obedience and simplicity of life. Followers of the movement favoured a more intimate and affective devotion and the trade in indulgence letters increased dramatically. The main hypothesis is that through their displayed imagery, carved altarpieces imported to churches further north were both active and incidental catalysts for the development of liturgical rites and devotional practices acted out in their vicinity. In order to get a more thorough understanding of these practices, the project combines an innovative approach with a diachronic perspective. The former is conceived by accessing the conglomerate of image (altarpiece), imitation (devotion) and indulgence (the care-taking of one's afterlife) as a single unit, drawing on the concept of hierotopy (sacred + place, space). The diachronic perspective is achieved by an examination of traces of devotio moderna also in Lutheran and Calvinist theology and the re-use of medieval sculpture in the early Protestant church room, arguing that the presence of certain saints and visual dogma in the altarpieces were a pretext for preserving or re-using them in the church room notwithstanding reformatory iconic strifes.
