The project «interorganisational complexity and risk of major accidents» aims at developing new knowledge about how interorganisational complexity influences safety in the petroleum industry. Up until now, there has been limited research addressing the safety implications of interorganisational complexity. The main objective of this project is describing how interorganisational complexity can contribute to safety challenges, and investigate and discuss how such challenges may be reduced. The knowledge resulting from this project can be utilized to inform safety practice in the industry, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidents due to the involvement of multiple companies.
Three studies have been completed in this project. The first study explored empirical research addressing interorganisational safety challenges in high-risk industries. The purpose was to investigate how interorganisational factors have been addressed in safety research as well as summarize the main tendencies in this research in order to better understand what interorganisational conditions may be related to safety challenges and major accident risk.  The study found that interorganisational complexity was related to issues pertaining to economical pressure factors, communication, coordination of tasks and competence, conditions that contribute to increase major accident risk. The study was published in Safety Science in 2016. 
The second study is a qualitative case study in which factors promoting and eroding safety was explored in a conventional drilling operation. The presence of high-quality relations seem to be an important premise for achieving a shared operational focus across companies. In this respect, long-term relationships between organizations as well as managers interactive role in the sharp-end are aspects that seem to be particularly important. Coordinating tasks and information across companies was regarded as a constant challenge. Managers reported increased administrative work load, which is concerning in this regard because it comes at the expense of time managers can spend in the sharp-end. The study was published in Cognition, Technology & Work in 2018.
The third study investigates how interorganisational factors have contributed to accidents and near-misses in the petroleum industry. The study involves a review of investigation reports issued by the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) from 2006-2016. Findings show that issues at the interfaces between companies have contributed to undesired occurrences in the petroleum industry, involving both occupational incidents as well as near accidents with major accident potential. Ambiguities in roles and responsibilities between companies, insufficient levels of competence as well as shortcomings in quality control and follow-up of operational processes were identified as the most salient factors contributing to undesired occurrences. The article is currently in review in Reliability Engineering and System Safety.
