Om Paris-avtalen skal oppfylles må 80% av verdens energiproduksjon ha null utslipp innen 2030, og all energi må ha null utslipp innen 2050. Teknologiene som behøves for å få til dette dramatiske skiftet avhenger av mineraler som kalles «kritiske materialer» (litium, kobber, sjeldne jordarter osv.). Hvis disse utvinnes i betydelig omfang i Arktis kan det endre regionens fokus fra olje og gass til gruvevirksomhet. Det vil kunne komplisere relasjonene mellom de arktiske statene og mellom dem og eksterne aktører som er interessert i disse ressursene. Frem til nå har kritiske materialer fått lite oppmerksomhet innen forskningen på arktisk geopolitikk, og ditto har forskningen om kritiske materialer globalt viet Arktis lite oppmerksomhet. NEXTRUSH-prosjektet skal fylle tomrommet mellom disse to forskningsområdene. 

Prosjektet er tverrfaglig. En ingeniør skal studere hvilke materialer som etterspørres for teknologier for ren energi, en geolog vil studere eksisterende data om arktiske mineralreserver, og samfunnsvitere vil analysere hva det de finner ut betyr for geopolitikk, internasjonale relasjoner, arktiske institusjoner og Kinas rolle i regionen. Prosjektet vil inkludere en analyse av hvilke land og produsenter som dominerer markedene for de forskjellige mineralene samt en scenarioøvelse.

Prosjektet vil produsere seks artikler i fagtidsskrifter, Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI), scenarier for arktisk gruvevirksomhet og dens konsekvenser, Svalbard-symposiet om gruvevirksomhet på havbunnen og fora for kritiske materialer og risiko.

Prosjektet utføres av noen av de forskerne som er mest aktive innen samfunnsvitenskapelig forskning på nordområdene i Norge.

To fulfill the Paris Agreement, the world needs to transition to 80% zero-emission energy by 2030, and 100% by 2050. The clean energy technologies needed to make this dramatic shift are dependent on the minerals known as "critical materials" (lithium, copper, rare earth elements etc.). If these are sourced from the Arctic, it might cause a shift in the interest in the region from fossil fuels to mining. This may complicate relations among the Arctic states and with the external actors interested in these resources. So far, research on Arctic geopolitics has paid little attention to this shift, and, conversely, the growing literature on the geopolitics of critical materials for the energy transition pays little attention to the Arctic. The NEXTRUSH project will fill the gap.

The project is genuinely interdisciplinary. An engineer will review the materials needed for clean energy technologies, geologists will review the data on Arctic reserves and compare them to global reserves, and, finally, social scientists will assess the implications for geopolitics, international relations, Arctic institutions and governance, and the role of China. The reviews of existing technological and geological data will be combined the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to measure the market dominance of supply sources and a Shell-style scenario-building exercise will be carried out. 

The project will result in six articles published in academic journals, the Arctic Environmental Responsibility Index (AERI) on oil, gas and mining in the Arctic (with its own website), a set of scenarios for Arctic mining and its consequences, the Svalbard Seabed Mining Symposium and Critical Materials Risk Fora.

The project team include some of the people who are most active in research on the Arctic in Norway and who have an exceptional track record and resources available for academic and public communication, see the section on dissemination.

Next Arctic Rush? Critical Materials for the Energy Transition

Vann husker klimaforholdene på sin vei gjennom vannsyklusen, og når vann fryser til snø og is, blir denne informasjonen bevart gjennom tidene. Så enhver snø- og isprøve har en klimahistorie å fortelle, og forskere lærer å knytte det kjemiske signalet i vannet til det tilsvarende klimasignalet. SnowDOGS-prosjektet vil studere hvordan et visst signal som vi finner i snøen, dannes og dermed identifisere hvordan klimaet har vært – omtrent som en hund, som snuser seg frem til begynnelsen av en sti når den følger løypa bakover; som ga oss ideen om å kalle prosjektet SnowDOGS.

I jordas polare områder har snø samlet seg i hundretusener av år, og dermed inneholder iskjerner boret i Grønlandsisen og Antarktis uvurderlig informasjon om jordas klimahistorie. Denne informasjonen er avgjørende for å forstå det komplekse klimasystemet og prosessene som definerer den gjennomsnittlige klimatilstanden, men også svingningene rundt gjennomsnittet. Når vi først har forstått klimasystemet og kan bygge klimamodeller som kan reprodusere klimasignalet vi finner i iskjerner, kan vi ha tillit til klimamodellens spådommer om fremtidig klima. 
For øyeblikket klarer modellene ikke å reprodusere snøsignalet som er koblet til årlige og dekadale klimasvingninger. Derfor kan det hende at modellen ikke simulerer prosessene som danner klimasignalet i snøen – kanskje noe mangler i modellen?
Målet med SnowDOGS er å forbedre eksisterende modeller ved å ta med kjemiske prosesser som skjer i snøen etter at den har falt på bakken. SnowDOGS bygger dermed på ny forskning som har vist at disse prosessene kan være viktige. Den forbedrede modellen vil bli testet ved å sammenligne modellsimuleringer med snødata hentet fra forskjellige steder på Grønland og Antarktis. Vi håper at den forbedrede modellen vil forbedre våre muligheter å snuse frem opprinnelsen til klimasignalet i snøen, også for snøen som har falt for mange hundretusen år siden. Dette vil også forbedre våre muligheter å forutsi framtidig klima.

Ice core water isotope records from the polar areas are invaluable climate proxies providing information about the relationship between the climate mean state and it's variability. The secondary ice core water isotope "excess" parameters, d-excess and 17O-excess, are especially useful for climate reconstruction since they presumably contain climatic information from the precipitation source regions. However, when simulating excess records with state-of-the-art isotope-enabled climate models, simulated and observed records disagree in seasonal to decadal signal variability. 

Strikingly, the ability to simulate isotope variability in precipitation and isotope variability in ice cores is distinct, which suggests d-/17O-excess signal formation processes after deposition. Recently, it was demonstrated that post-depositional processes (PDP) can influence the snow isotopic composition, yet the impact of PDP on the ice core signal has not been quantified. Thus, PDP could be the missing link in our understanding of the transfer function between climate and ice core signal. SnowDOGS' hypothesis is thus that PDP, which are currently not implemented in climate models, define the ice core d-/17O-excess signals and overprint the original precipitation source region information.

SnowDOGS will quantify the impact of PDP on ice core excess signals by implementing multiple PDP in an existing snow model for the first time. Simulated d-/17O-excess records will be compared against observed ice core records from various locations on both ice sheets. SnowDOGS will clarify i) if PDP help in aligning simulated and observed isotope records, ii) to what extent PDP overprint the original source signal, and iii) what role PDP played in generating the high-frequency variability in d-/17O-excess records observed during both the current warm and the last glacial period. SnowDOGS will thus combine modeling and proxy records to improve the reconstruction and prediction of climate variability.

Snow D-excess OriGin Study

Man0EUvRE will improve energy system modelling across Europe and provide open research-based answers with ambitions to: 1. Develop robust pathways for the European energy system that meet climate targets towards net-zero GHG emissions and consider current policies 2. Provide feedback and advice to the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) of the individual EU countries. 3. Improve a set of models for conducting energy transition studies at European and national level,
which can support NECP generation, evaluation and future updates. 4. Publish consistent energy system modelling datasets and scenario projections at European and national level. 5. Strengthen coordination between national energy plans and EU-wide transition goals. Man0EUvRE will push the research frontier by: • Bridging the gap between academic energy system models and real-life applications that support the clean energy transition with model development, • New insights in
scenarios and pathways for Europe that lead us to a net-zero 2050 while incorporating the perspective of a secure energy supply described in the REPowerEU strategy and the Net Zero Industrial act, • Man0EUvRE will provide a pan-European perspective to the NECP development, enabling joint undertaking with lower costs. Man0EUvRE meets call module 1.1 objectives National vs European perspectives, Integrated energy system planning tools, Resilient planning and operation,
Market design and regulation and Energy-economy models.

Energy System Modelling for Transition to a net-Zero 2050 for EU via REPowerEU

The aim of this project is to assess, control, and manage thermal storage potentials and flexibility at both building and district level to enable the complete renewable, smart, resource, and cost-efficient energy systems. Current district heating (DH) systems and existing buildings are huge free assets to store thermal energy and thereby enable bigger flexibility of the entire energy system. The flexibility can be used to make the heating system more resource efficient, and thereby economical and environmentally friendly. To scale up the proposed solutions, the project approaches will be tested on three case studies and several synthetic studies built on the real-time long-term measurements. The project concept is based on a unique smart control idea to optimize at the same time the demand side based on the variable energy prices and the supply side based on the resulting demand prediction and thereby to use renewables in resource efficient way for heating and cooling purpose. To fully utilize all possibilities for flexibility in energy systems, with the increasing deployment of electric vehicle (EV) and photovoltaic (PV) deployment in the residential sector, this project will also evaluate how EVs and PVs can be optimally coupled with DH (e.g., via heat pumps), as well as their potentials in balancing the demand and supply in both heating and electricity sector.
TRAINING will provide solutions to achieve a resource-efficient and sustainable distribution, storage, and utilization of heating and cooling. It also considers the coupling of the heating sector with other sectors and thereby increasing flexibility, resource-efficiency, and climate-neutrality. Further, TRAINING will also strongly focus on utilization of digital and smart technologies in buildings and DH systems.
TRAINING is a joint effort among partners from academy, research, and industry. Partners from Sweden, Germany, and Norway are involved in the project.

Thermal energy storing and digitalization in district heating to enable transition to renewable and resource efficient energy systems

Digitalisering står sentralt i norsk bærekrafts- og energiomstillingspolitikk. Forhåpninger til digitalisering handler blant annet om effektivisering og «dematerialisering». Samtidig blir løftene rundt digitalisering sjelden sett i sammenheng med ringvirkninger av digital infrastruktur, slik som energi-, materialbruk- og konsekvenser for lokalsamfunn – materielle og stedbundne aspekter av den virtuelle «skyen» vi stadig blir mer avhengige av. 

Limits to digitalization (L2D) studerer datasentre som fenomen i lys av både global bærekraft, norsk omstillingspolitikk, og ringvirkninger for norske lokalsamfunn. Ved å dokumentere dilemmaene, konflikter og usikkerhet rundt datasentre i og på tvers av disse nivåene, vil prosjektet bidra til å se digital infrastruktur ikke bare som et redskap for effektivisering, men også for tilstrekkelighet, ved å utforske ideer og former for nøysomhet i relasjon til digitalisering. 

Prosjektets forskningsspørsmål er: Hvordan kan begreper om nøysomhet brukes på digital infrastruktur, for å forstå og forbedre konsekvensene av digitalisering? Spørsmålet studeres av et forskerteam fra NTNU Samfunnsforskning, NTNU og Boston University, som i samarbeid med lokale og nasjonale aktører gjennomfører casestudier, analyserer etiske og samfunnsmessige avveininger og utfører internasjonal komparativ forskning i kombinasjon med modelleringsaktiviteter for driftsoptimalisering.

Kommunal- og distriktsdepartementet, Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet, Invest in Norway og Norsk Datasenter Industri deler kompetanse om nasjonale rammevilkår og hensyn. Kommunene Løten, Hadsel, Hamar, Skien, Vennesla og Vågå deler sine ulike erfaringer omkring datasentre sine implikasjoner for lokalsamfunn. Kunnskapsmålene er både ny og politikkrelevant forskning om næringen og dens rolle i relasjon til bærekraft, samt nye verktøy og modeller med relevans for drift og regulering i sektoren.

The energy transition tends to foreground the efficiency of energy-intensive industries over energy sufficiency. Limits to digitalization (L2D) will address this paradox by studying digital infrastructures (e.g., data centers) to explore the socio-environmental implications of digitalization. L2D will develop a conceptual framework for digital infrastructure sufficiency, thus contributing to the challenges outlined in the portfolio plan through addressing knowledge gaps around energy and material consumption and local impacts of data center establishments, seen against the beneficial prospects of digitalization through improved efficiency, de-materialization, and value-creation. Fundamentally, L2D asks whether these tensions imply a need for “limits” to digitalization, and what such limits might look like. 

L2D explores Twin Transition challenges through the lens of Norwegian data centers. We consider energy transitions’ impacts on society, climate, and nature, through the on-going attempt by Norway to become a global hub for digital infrastructure, justified by reference to digitalization’s environmental, climate, and societal benefits. Norwegian decision makers at all levels struggle to make sense of and govern the trade-offs around data center establishments. Through a novel partnership with Norwegian municipalities, national policy makers, and industry, L2D conducts local case studies, studies national governance in a cross-national comparative perspective, and helps shape the emerging frameworks around this nascent industry. The project’s unprecedented access to and collaboration with the notoriously secretive data center industry aims to hold Norwegian industry partners accountable to the highest international standards, and enable leading scientific partners to develop knowledge and tools for improved decision-making and transparency around energy and data center governance.

Limits to digitalization: Exploring the transition challenges of Norwegian data centers

Det siste års sterke svingninger og raske økninger i energiprisene har satt søkelys på hvordan den pågående omstillingen av Norge til et lavutslippssamfunn kan slå ulikt ut for ulike samfunnsgrupper. Det har vist seg utfordrende å finne politisk og økonomisk gode grep som både kan kompensere utsatte forbrukere og samtidig sikre andre mål i klima- og energipolitikken. FAIRPOWER-prosjektet vil ta for seg dette dilemmaet. Det består av tre integrerte deler: 

Arbeidspakke 1 vil utforske modellscenarioer for hvordan kraftmarkedene vil kunne respondere på lavutslippsutviklingen. Kraftmarkedene vil bli påvirket direkte, men også indirekte via andre sektorer og internasjonale markeder. Et sentralt element i omstillingen vil være å gå over fra fossil energi til fornybar kraft. Scenarioanalyse er en måte å illustrere usikkerhet på; utfallene vil avhenge ikke bare av strategivalgene i Norge, men også i utlandet, ikke minst utviklingen i og samspillet med resten av Europa. 

Med scenarioene som bakteppe vil vi i arbeidspakke 2 analysere hvordan ulike husholdningsgrupper påvirkes av energiomstillingen. Virkningene forventes å være forskjellige avhengig av husholdningenes inntekt, hvor de bor og arbeider og hva slags teknologier og energikilder de benytter til oppvarming og transport. Til disse analysene vil vi utvikle en ny husholdningsmodell som kan koples til de økonomiske scenarioene. 

In arbeidspakke 3 vil vi bruke erfaringene fra de to første delene til å vurdere mulige tiltak som kan kompensere husholdningene for økte energipriser og motvirke uønskede fordelingsvirkninger av lavutslippsomstillingen. Som del av arbeidet vil vi gå gjennom kompensasjonsordninger som er blitt brukt i ulike europeiske land siden energiprisene steg betraktelig i 2022. Vi vil sammenlikne ulike utforminger med tanke på fordelingsvirkninger, samfunnsøkonomiske kostnader og utslag på sentrale energi- og klimapolitiske mål.

The recent energy price peaks have called attention to how an accelerating low-emission transition ahead may have undesired distributional impacts. A key challenge is to design compensatory policies that do not set the transition nor other energy policy goals at risk. FAIRPOWER seeks to advance the scientific knowledge base relevant to this policy dilemma through 3 research steps. Main outcomes of Work Package (WP) 1 will be scenarios for how the power markets respond to low-emission strategies. The case is Norway, who aims to substantially electrify the economy. The use of a multisectoral, multiregional macroeconomic model system will capture interrelated adaptations across all sectors, indirect power market feedbacks and Norway’s dependency on the EU’s low-emission strategy, given their partly integrated power markets and common climate policies. The scenarios will reflect the uncertainty about how these international political and economic relations will evolve. 

WP2 will investigate distributional impacts of the low-emission transition, both across income groups and across households distinguished by a variety of attributes within income groups, incl. region, job sector and heating equipment, household composition and residential characteristics. The research will methodologically go beyond state-of-the-art by building a microsimulation model with better data, more details and simultaneity. With the consistent macroeconomic scenarios as a backdrop, we will study distributional impacts of simultaneous changes affecting households through consumer prices, investment costs and income elements. 

WP3 will use the results from WP1 and WP2 to analyse compensatory schemes. First, we will survey and analyse European recent compensatory policies. Based on this insight we will investigate how various designs can balance fairness concerns against the low-emission transition and other energy and climate policy goals in the Norwegian setting and under different scenarios.

A fair low-emission transition of the power market (FAIRPOWER)

Samtidig som innovative offshore-teknologier for fornybar energi blir stadig mer og mer populært, er driften av dem i et tøft miljø til havs en kompleks og utfordrende prosess. Det betyr altså at potensielt vitkig teknologi for våre fremtidige genrasjoner kan bli holdt tilbake på grunn av miljøet vi opplever utenfor vår kyst. Wave Energy Conversion (WEC)-enheter er dynamiske strukturer med komponenter utsatt for flere typer belastninger og nedbrytningsmekanismer som alle kan virke sammen. Derfor kan de være utsatt for noe vi kaller for multi-degraderingsmekanismer, som per nå ikke er godt nok forstått til å ha gode løsninger lett tilgjengelig. Denne mangelen på grunnleggende kunnskap og mangelen på laboratorietester som er i stand til å simulere de komplekse multi-nedbrytningsmekanismene er en av hovedårsakene til at utviklingen og implementeringen av WEC-enheter bremses.
MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) foreslår å etablere av en ny robust metodikk med nye og forbedrede verktøy for materialvalg. Målet vil være å opprette forenkle testprosedyrer som er i stand til å generere og validere neste generasjon av materialer for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) enheter, å overkommne dagens energi- og miljøutfordringer. Gjennom den kombinerte effekten av korrosjon og slitasje (tribokorosjon) og multi-degradering (tribokorrosjon akselerert av utmatting) kan man potensielt oppnå en bedre forståelse til å nettop velge ut de best egnede materialene til et slikt formål. Nyskapningen til MORE-prosjektet er basert på harmoniserende små- og storskala multi-degraderingsrigger, for å skape et raskere forløp for validering av materialer, for å muliggjøre industriell bruk av nye metoder, og forbedre systemenes pålitelighet og levetid. MORE vil demonstrere en valideringsvei gjennom testing av multi-degradering for materialer og komponenter som skal brukes i den voksene fornybare energisektoren offshore.

MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) proposes the creation of a new robust methodology with improved tools for material selection and validation to harmonize testing procedures capable of generating the next generation of materials for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) devices, to overcome the present energy and environmental challenges.
This will be achieved by considering tribocorrosion (wear accelerated by corrosion) and multi-degradation (tribocorrosion accelerated by fatigue) in a field highly affected by these degradation mechanisms. This is a brand-new material selection methodology for the renewable energy sector compared to the current incomplete conventional material selection and validation process (DNV Guidelines1). This project will allow the offshore renewable energy sector to reach their milestones in a more resilient and realistic way, giving it an edge against its current fossil fuel competitors like the Oil and Gas (O&G) sector.
MORE’s methodology incorporates the functionality of small-scale testing, up to scaled-up devices. This approach is expected to contribute significantly to directly solving the ORE sector's challenges, making a step change improvement in the reliability, performance, lifetime predictability and longevity of their equipment.

Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices

En gammastråleglød er en røntgen- og gammastråling som genereres i tordenskyer, som varer fra sekunder til flere minutter. Denne energiske strålingen produserer (1) kjemiske effekter som modifiserer ozonlaget og endrer aerosolinnholdet i stratosfæren; og (2) elektriske effekter, dvs. modifiserer strømmer som flyter mellom jorden og himmelen som er delen av den såkalte globale elektriske kretsen. Målet med prosjektet vårt er å teoretisk og kvantitativt studere disse effektene og deres forskjell fra effektene av kosmiske stråler, som er strålingen som kommer nedover fra himmelen. Vi vil bruke ulike numeriske metoder, inkludert modeller for forplantning av energetisk stråling, modeller for utvikling av kjemiske bestanddeler og aerosoler, og modeller av elektriske felt og strømmer i atmosfæren. De nye modellene utviklet i løpet av prosjektet vil være tilgjengelige for andre forskere som jobber med fysikk av atmosfære og tordenvær. Prosjektet vil produsere handlingskraftig kunnskap gjennom vitenskapelige publikasjoner, webinarer og et dedikert nettsted.

A gamma ray glow (GRG) is a long-lasting x-ray and gamma radiation generated in thunderclouds. It may last from seconds to several minutes and contain photons with energies exceeding 5 MeV. The brightest GRG may be one or two orders of magnitude higher than the background due to cosmic rays.

Energetic x-rays produced by GRG and emitted upwards from the thundercloud may strongly affect the chemical-physical conditions of the stratosphere through additional ionization. The ionization has several effects that we plan to quantify in this project by theoretical modeling:
1. It interacts with the atmosphere to produce nitric oxide, a powerful agent which reduces the ozone layer.
2. The ions serve as seeds for condensation, which leads to an increase in stratospheric aerosol content.
3. The increased ionization leads to increased conductivity in stratosphere. This affects currents flowing in the global electrical circuit (GEC).

The ionization effect of GRG is different from cosmic-ray-induced ionization, not only because the flux of x-rays in GRG may exceed that in cosmic rays by orders of magnitude. Unlike cosmic rays, GRG are localized both in time (last seconds to several minutes) and in space (only exist in the vicinity of a thunderstorm), which may lead to new effects. Preliminary estimates also show that the production of nitric oxide (item 1 above) may be of the same order as the strongest source of this chemical in the stratosphere, namely oxidation of nitrous oxide which diffuses upward from the Earth's surface.

Gamma-ray-glow Effects on Atmospheric Electricity and Chemistry

Den atlantiske omveltningssirkulasjonen fører varmt, salt vann til høye breddegrader og er en nøkkelkomponent i den globale havsirkulasjonen og klimasystemet. Dannelsen av tungt vann (høy tetthet) på høye breddegrader er avgjørende for å opprettholde omveltningen. Tidligere har man antatt at denne produksjonen av tungt vann skjer gjennom dyp konveksjon i Labrador- og Grønlandshavet. Nyere observasjoner og modellresultater tyder imidlertid på at hovedkilden til tungt vann er atlantisk vann som gradvis forvandles til kaldere og tyngre vann på sin vei gjennom de Nordiske hav og Polhavet. Mens transformasjonen av atlantisk vann i de Nordiske hav er mye studert, er lite kjent om dannelsen av tunge vannmasser og omveltningssirkulasjonen i Polhavet.

Det arktiske klimaet endrer seg raskt, og er i ferd med å gå over til en varmere og isfri klimatilstand. Dette kan få store konsekvenser for den arktiske omveltningssirkulasjonen. Den pågående tilbaketrekningen av havis langs randen av Polhavet har gjort det atlantiske vannet eksponert for atmosfæren om vinteren, noe som muliggjør ytterligere modifisering og produksjon av tungt vann. Etter hvert som overgangen mot et isfritt Polhavet fortsetter kan det forventes økt konveksjon, noe som kan føre til en mulig styrking av den arktiske omveltningssirkulasjonen. Den arktiske omveltningssirkulasjonen kan derfor være en stabiliserende faktor i en svekket global havsirkulasjon. Dette understreker viktigheten av å forstå hva som driver den arktiske omveltningssirkulasjonen og hvordan den reagerer på klimaendringer.

Dette prosjektet (ArMOC) vil gi ny, grunnleggende kunnskap om sentrale prosesser i den arktiske omveltningssirkulasjonen og dens følsomhet for klimaendringer. ArMOC vil dermed føre til redusert usikkerhet i framskrivninger av arktiske klimaendringer og en forbedret forståelse av Polhavets rolle i den globale havsirkulasjonen.

The Arctic overturning circulation involves the production of water masses that are key to the global ocean circulation associated with the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Arctic climate is, however, rapidly changing, and it is currently not known how the Arctic overturning circulation is responding. Dense-water formation that is a requirement to sustain the AMOC has canonically been thought to take place through deep convection in the Labrador and Greenland Seas. However, recent observations and model results suggest that the main source of dense water to the lower limb of the AMOC is Atlantic Water (AW) that gradually transforms to denser waters on its path along the Atlantic Water Boundary Current (AWBC) in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean. The recent sea-ice retreat along the margins of the Arctic Ocean has partially uncovered the AWBC, exposing it to the atmosphere in winter and, hence, allowing further modification of the AW. As the transition towards a seasonally ice-free Arctic continues, more years of enhanced convection can be expected, leading to a possible strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation. The Arctic overturning circulation could therefore be a stabilizing factor in a weakening AMOC, highlighting the importance of understanding its drivers and its response to climate change. ArMOC will accordingly provide:
- A step-change in our understanding of the Arctic overturning circulation in present and future climates by providing a first quantification using the approach of thermohaline streamfunctions.
- A comprehensive understanding of the entire AWBC system around the Nordic Seas and the Arctic Ocean from observations, including new, unique wintertime data from Argo floats, and high-resolution models.
- Novel insights on AW pathways and transformation within the Arctic Ocean, and whether these are expected to change under future global warming, through Lagrangian analysis with high- and low-resolution models.

Overturning circulation in the new Arctic

I den siste tiden før døden inntreffer er det vanlig at pasienter mister evnen til å gi uttrykk for hvordan de har det. I denne perioden er det derfor vanskelig å vite hva pasienten opplever. Siden god kunnskap om pasientens bevissthetstilstand er avgjørende for å kunne gi riktig behandling, vil ethvert tegn til vedvarende bevissthet være verdifullt. Både for pleierne, pårørende, og ikke minst pasientene selv. 

Selv om evnen til å kommunisere vanligvis sammenfaller med bevissthet har fremskritt innen bevissthetsforskningen de siste tiårene gitt god grunn til å tro at mange ikke-kommuniserende pasienter er ved bevissthet. Med andre ord er det tilfeller der pasienter som ikke er kontaktbare, og som lett kan antas å være bevisstløse, høyst sannsynlig fremdeles har bevisste opplevelser. For eksempel har studier vist at så mye som 70% av forsøksdeltagere i narkose kan rapportere drømmer (nøyaktige tall er avhengig av stoff og dosering), og 40% av hjerneskadede pasienter i såkalt “vegetativ tilstand” har vist tegn til vedvarende bevissthet. Dette kan også være tilfelle hos noen pasienter som ligger for døden, og har mistet sin evne til å kommunisere.

I vårt prosjekt ønsker vi å bruke nyere verktøy basert på oppdatert kunnskap fra forskningsfronten om bevissthet for å studere omfanget av vedvarende bevissthet hos ikke-kommuniserende pasienter som ligger for døden. Ved hjelp av kvantitative og kvalitative metoder ønsker vi å utvikle verktøy som kan måle tegn til bevissthet direkte fra hjerneaktiviteten til slike pasienter, slik at pleierne kan være i bedre stand til å ivareta pasientenes velferd i deres siste tid. Vår gruppe, bestående av leger, etikere, og eksperter på hjernemåling vil jobbe i nært samarbeid med pleiere, pasientorganisasjoner, og pårørende for å forstå hvordan kunnskapen og verktøyene vi utvikler best kan brukes i klinisk praksis, til pasientenes beste.

In the terminal stage before death, patients often become partially or completely unresponsive and unable to communicate coherently with caretakers. Although unresponsiveness is often associated with unconsciousness, recent research has shown that a surprisingly high proportion of unresponsive patients retain consciousness in some patient populations (e.g. as much as 43% of unresponsive patients suffering from disorders of consciousness have been shown to be misclassified as unconscious). This may also be true for dying patients, meaning that they may suffer from symptoms such as pain, thirst, and anxiety, that are not recognized and treated. However, this potential issue has been largely ignored, and would benefit from being addressed using state-of-the art methods. Our cross-disciplinary team of experts on brain-based measures of consciousness, clinical palliative care, and medical ethics aims to contribute to solving this issue. 

Specifically, we will assess how the best brain-based measures of consciousness can be used in palliative care, to understand when and how often unresponsive dying patients retain consciousness covertly. In phase 1 of our project, we will select, adapt, and test theoretically and empirically sound candidate measures that are likely to be useful for detecting consciousness in unresponsive patients. These measures will be evaluated for use in the palliative care settings in control experiments with healthy volunteers and patients. In phase 2, we will apply the most promising candidate measures in unresponsive, dying patients, and evaluate their clinical value and apparent capacity to detect covert consciousness. 

Importantly, the project will be conducted in close collaboration with patients, their next of kin, interest organizations, and clinical staff, to ensure our tools can be used in ways that improve care for the dying and maintain dignity in a difficult time, rather than just adding to the interventional load at the end of life.

Forum for marin fornybar energi (FFMFE) er dannet av Norske kraft- og oljeselskaper som ønsker at fornybare energikilder til havs blir tatt i bruk. Forumet består per i dag av Statoil, Shell Technology Norway, Statkraft, BKK, Lyse Produksjon, Agder Energi  Produksjon, Fred. Olsen & Co, Hafslund og Trondheim Energiverk.

IEA OES ble dannet i oktober 2001. Målsetningen er å forsterke det internasjonale samarbeidet for å gjøre havenergiteknologi til et viktig energialternativ i et mellomlangt tidsperspektiv. Gjennom å fremme forskning, utvikling og demonstrasjonsprosjekter, samt deling og spredning av informasjon, skal havenergiteknologier drives mot kommersialisering. Prioriterte teknologier i dag er utnyttelse av energi fra bølger, tidevann og havstrømmer. Canada, Danmark, Irland, Storbritannia, Portugal, USA, Japan og EU er medlemmer.

Basert på Norges naturressurser og kompetanse innenfor offshoreteknologi og kraftproduksjon har vi alle muligheter til å bli en stor produsent av fornybar energi fra havet, samt mulighet til å bygge opp ledende teknologileverandører
