Compute Ecology - Computational Modelling of Phytoplankton Growth in Stratified Fjord and Coastal Waters, Postdr.. NN

Awarded: NOK 2.9 mill.

Prosjektsammendrag: In fjords and coastal waters the freshwater from rivers may often give a mixed upper layer separated from the lower layers by a pronounced density difference. The upper layer, with its largest solar radiation, is the living domain for the phytoplankton, the basis for the food chain. Eventually the phytoplankton growth is limited by the supply of nutrients from the layers below. This flux is normally very small. The behaviour of the upper mixed layer, with its stratified boundary towa rds the lower layers, will therefore be important for the ecology processes. The objective of the proposed project is to improve and validate computational methods for modelling of phytoplankton growth in the upper mixed layer in stratified fjords and coastal waters. High international quality of the mathematical and numerical research is to be achieved through strongly focused PhD-research topic backed up by research and software development performed by senior scientists.
