Subatomic theory

Awarded: NOK 1.3 mill.

Present subatomic physics targets highly energetic, extreme forms of matter, which were present in the early universe and exists in neutron stars. Theoretical research shows the way for this research by predicting new states and properties of matter. When such are found, it takes a joint theoretical and experimental effort to describe them, and find their place in the hierarchy of our knowledge. Although it is not possible to foresee discoveries several years ahead of time, the directions of research are s et by the trends in the world, and most importantly by the experimental possibilities of the coming years. Thus, the start up of large accelera tors, particularly the CERN-LHC (2005) dominate setting our theoretical plans and predictions. In the field of extreme nuclear states important discoveries are expected in the whole grant period. The study of extreme nuclear states and reactions is promoting new technology such as advances in accelerator driven transmulation of nuclear waste, which may help to so lve our radioactive waste problem and reduce our energy shortage.
