2D- and 3D-models of the solar wind acceleration region

Awarded: NOK 1.4 mill.

During the change of polarity of the solar magnetic field the upper solar atmosphere is very active and the reversal of the solar magnetic field is believed to be closely connected to the acceleration of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). The CMEs may result in a large perpendicular component in the interplanetary magnetic field, and may interact with the earth's magnetic field causing large disturbences in the earth's magnetosphere. The doctoral project focuses on developing 2D and 3D magneto hydrodynamic ( MHD) models of the outer solar atmosphere. It is very important to include heat conduction in the numerical MHD models in order to give a self-consistent description of the energy balance in the transition region and the lower regions of the solar corona. e energy When the numerical code is developed it will be used to study the acceleration of the solar wind and the formation of CMEs. This study will hopefully lead to better understanding of the acceleration of the solar wind, and the processes causing C MEs.
