Integrating Modelling and Remote Sensing for Algae Bloom Monitoring in Norwegian Waters, Dr.gr.stip.

Awarded: NOK 2.9 mill.

Currently major defficiencies exist in our ability to understand and describe algal bloom events and their influence on the environment. In this project we will contribute in: 1) defining the environmental conditions that lead to bloom of the harmful alga Chattonella, which has been a threath for the aquaculture industry in Norway since 1998;2) in assessing and developiong tools and techniques (remote sensing and ecosystem models), which will contribute to improve monitoring of aglal bloom events. In so doing, three main workpackages are defines: - Regional and historical study of HAB events in Norwegian waters;-existing ecosystem modelling system. There are strong two-ways links between each of these workpackages. The expected results should significant ly contribute to toe improvement of our ability to detect, monitor and predict algae blooms (potentially harmful) in Norwegian waters.
