The impact of smoltification on salmon immune response

Awarded: NOK 2.1 mill.

Smoltification is generally thought to be a highly stressful period in the life cycle of Atlantic salmon effecting both the growth and quality of the fish. The hormonal changes associated with smoltification are also thought to result in an altered immune status that may leave the fish more open to infection by bacterial and viral pathogens. We propose to study the immune and hormonal status of pre-smolt, smolt and post smolt salmon. Two populations of salmon will be utilised: normal smolting salmon and a fresh water strain. These studies will provide valuable information as to the ability of Norwegian salmon to combat infection and respond to vaccines during this critical developmental period.
