Carbon dioxide storage in hydrate reservoir

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

The London Dumping treaty puts heavy constraints on options for CO2 storage that will be accepted according to this treaty. Storage of CO2 in natural gas hydrate reservoir is one of the safest options for storage of CO2 . Compared to ocean sequestration and reservoir storage this option is economically balanced by the value of the produced gas. Japan has a goal to start exploitation of a hydrate reservoir offshore the coast of Japan (at depths of 3000-4000 m). This hydr ate reservoir alone is estimated to provide Japan with energy for the next 100 years. Conversion of natural gas hydrate reservoir to carbon dioxide hydrate reservoir is the strategy in focus according to current research programs in Japan on these issues. In an international perspective an increased fundamental understanding of hydrate conversion can contribute to Norwegian industrial participation in this exploitation project. The CO2 from planned Norwegiangas power plants can be transported to Norwegian gas hydrate reservoir.
