FUGE 2002 - Consortium for Advanced Microbial Sciences and Technologies

Awarded: NOK 26.3 mill.

Genomic science and related technologies have the power to revolutionize the field of microbiology, which will in turn improve the quality of life and provide unique economic opportunities. In order to fulfill this potential, strategic interventions are i mmediately needed to maintain and promote advanced prokaryotic sciences in Norway. This proposal reflects the joint efforts of six groups within the Oslo area to provide the scientific foundation and infrastructure for such a purpose. Members of CAMST hav e already initiated projects relevant to the FUGE initiative. In the process, significant contacts with leading groups ouside of Norway engaged in microbial genomics, bioinformatics and proteomics have been established. These collaborations represent a ma jor breakthrough for establishing networks critical to scientific exchange, education and development in Norway. Moreover, the research projects themselves are expected to generate new insights into the basic biology of prokaryotes an and contribute significantly to the development of new strategies for the reduction and prevention of disease as well as development of new drug targets.
