MATPROG-Matprogrammet: Norsk mat fra sjø og land

Control of apple fruit moth (Agyresthia conjugela Zeller) by attractive volatiles emitted from rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.)

Awarded: NOK 3.0 mill.

An ongiong co-operation between the Norwegian Crop Research Institute and Chemical Ecology Group, SLU Alnarp has given some most promising results. The goal is to identify volatile compounds from rowan, Sorbus aucuparia, which guide mated females of apple fruit moth, Argyrestia conjugella, to oviposition sites. Volatiles from rowan are to be analysed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Antennal perception of these compounds by female moths will be studied and leading to behavioural studies. Lure s with synthetic or purified authentic compounds will be formulated for laboratory and field tests on female attraction. The knowledge will be used to develop a species-specific and environmentally safe control technique for apple fruit moth, the most imp ortant insect pest on apple. The work involves education of a PhD candidate in agricultural entomology at Agricultural University of Norway with Trond Hofsvang as supervisor.
