Effektene av fysisk og seksuell vold på ofre og deres familier kan være ødeleggende og vedvarende, med potensielt langvarige konsekvenser for fysisk og mental helse, utdanning, sysselsetting og bruk av velferdstjenester. Mens strafferettssystemet anses som en viktig del av offerets gjenopprettingsprosess, er det begrenset empirisk forskning på hvorvidt strafferettslige prosesser hjelper og/eller hindrer bedring langs disse ulike dimensjonene. I dette prosjektet vil vi adressere dette kunnskapshullet ved å bruke en kombinasjon av kvantitative og kvalitative forskningsmetoder. I de kvantitative analysene vil vi bruke administrative registerdata som dekker hele befolkningen sammen med kvasi-eksperimentelle metoder for å kunne trekke kausale slutninger. Vi vil også benytte maskinlæringsteknikker for prediksjon. De kvalitative analysene vil supplere de kvantitative analysene ved å gi kontekst til et komplekst felt av saker og ofre og ved å identifisere potensielle mekanismer mellom strafferettslige prosesser og utfall for ofrene. Samlet vil disse metodene gi en mer robust, representativ og nyansert forståelse av hvordan kontakt med strafferettssystemet påvirker offeret på tvers av flere viktige livsområder både på kort og lang sikt. Prosjektet ledes av Folkehelseinstituttet (FHI) med Frischsenteret og Universitetet i Oslo som partnere. Prosjektet har et rådgivende utvalg med medlemmer fra Nasjonalt kunnskapssenter om vold og traumatisk stress (NKVTS), ETH Zurich, Universitetet i Oslo, Frischsenteret, Universitetet i Bergen, og OsloMet. Det er også tilknyttet en brukergruppe bestående av personer og organisasjoner som er i kontakt med ofre for vold og overgrep.

Victims of sexual and physical violence is one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. The criminal justice system (CJS) serves a critical role in providing assistance to victims of these crimes, enabling them to seek justice, protection, compensation, and closure. Yet, knowledge about whether the CJS helps or harms these victims is extremely limited. This project aims to remedy this by providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of the CJS in supporting and providing restoration for victims of physical and sexual violence in Norway. We will utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods across disciplines to study outcomes across multiple important life domains, both in the short and long run. For the quantitative analyses we will use exceptionally rich longitudinal administrative register data with full population coverage combined with state-of-the-art quasi-experimental methods for credible causal inference and predictive machine learning techniques. The qualitative analysis will be based on narrative interviews with victims, providing context and insights into how interactions with the CJS shape life stories. The results will yield a robust and nuanced understanding of how the different stages of the CJS impacts victims. This is particularly urgent given how the current emphasis on legal responses to assaults has caused a sense of obligation and civic duty for especially women to report incidents, while the chances of legal closure remain small. In addition to advancing the methods for quasi-experimental designs and machine learning within quantitative criminology, this project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and practitioners working in the field of victim support and rehabilitation and may inform current legal reform efforts aimed at addressing these issues.

Helpful or harmful: The effects of criminal justice system contact on victims of sexual and physical violence

Dyrearter over hele verden har endret atferd og migrasjonsmønstre som respons på klimaendringer, og globalt opplever vi en økning i tap av biologisk mangfold. Flaggermus utgjør den nest største pattedyrordenen i verden. Likevel vet vi fremdeles relativt lite om hvordan individer og populasjoner påvirkes av klimaendringer. Flaggermus har lav reproduksjonsrate og trenger mye mat relativt til den beskjedne kroppsstørrelsen. Forskere antar derfor at flaggermus er spesielt følsomme for klimaendringer. For å kunne gi gode råd om forvaltning og bevaring, må vi først vite hvilke egenskaper som gjør en flaggermusart mer sårbar, og hvilke årstider som gir dem de største utfordringene ved nordlige breddegrader; selv om vinteren i nord er lang og kald kan sommeren vise seg å være en større utfordring for nattaktive dyr, med lyse og korte sommernetter som begrenser tiden flaggermus har til å finne mat. Gjennom dette prosjektet prøver vi å finne ut hva som driver atferdsmessige, fysiologiske, eller sesongmessige responser på klimaendringer hos nordiske flaggermus fra sør til nord i Fennoskandia. Vi forsøker også å identifisere mulige tidsperioder som reduserer overlevelse hos nordiske flaggermus i lys av fremtidige klima-scenarioer, der hver årstid har sine egne dilemmaer små flaggermus må overvinne for å overleve. Dette prosjektet er et teoretisk modelleringsprosjekt, og et 3-årig forskningssamarbeid mellom BatLab Norway (NMBU) og BatLab Finland (universitetet i Helsinki).

Climate change will continue to alter weather conditions, food webs and energy requirements for species globally over the next decades, with escalating rates of warming especially predicted in the north. Bats belong to the second most species-rich mammal group in the world and are believed to be particularly sensitive to future climate change; however, we still have little knowledge on the mechanisms behind behavioral, physiological, and phenological responses to climate change in bats.

Nordic bats live in seasonal environments and face particular energetic dilemmas each season, that ultimately impact their survival- or reproductive chances. Common for these energetic dilemmas is that Nordic bats can use energy-saving behaviours (torpor and hibernation) throughout the annual cycle, but face certain costs in return. However, the costs and benefits of using these behaviours depend on individual state and on current and future environmental conditions, which demands a certain level of environmental predictability in order for bats to optimise their decisions.

With prospects of the weather becoming more unpredictable in the north, it has never been more urgent to identify potential bottlenecks for species living close to the border of their distribution limits, and to identify the traits that make them vulnerable to climate change.

In this project I will use stochastic dynamic state-dependent optimization models to identify the mechanisms behind responses to climate change in different Nordic bat species across seasons and latitudes. Such models evaluate costs and benefits of different behaviors, calculates the optimal decision under various conditions, and predicts the consequences of each choice, finally allowing us to simulate long-term population survival.

By combining the expertise of BatLab Finland and BatLab Norway I will be able to detect the seasonal limitations for survival and reproduction in Nordic bats across a latitudinal gradient.

Vulnerability of Nordic bat species to climate change: identifying seasonal bottlenecks across latitudes (NordBats)

Prosjektet har som mål å utforske og utvikle matematiske og numeriske metoder for å analysere stokastiske transportligninger. Disse ligningene er essensielle for å forstå hvordan tilfeldige fluktuasjoner (støy) påvirker dynamiske systemer som turbulens, vannbølger, geofysiske strømmer, og kompressibel væskebevegelse. Transportligninger er en type partielle differensialligninger som brukes til å modellere bevegelse og spredning av størrelser som masse, energi eller kjemiske stoffer i et medium. Disse ligningene tar hensyn til hastighetsfeltet, som beskriver retning og hastighet av bevegelsen i mediet. Ved å inkludere stokastiske elementer i disse modellene, kan vi ta høyde for tilfeldige påvirkninger eller støy som oppstår i systemet. Dette er avgjørende fordi mange naturlige og industrielle prosesser er utsatt for uforutsigbare faktorer, som kan ha innvirkning på deres dynamikk. Prosjektet fokuserer på gradientstøy, hvor hastighetsfeltene påvirkes av støy. Dette muliggjør energibevarende løsninger, noe som er ønskelig i fluidmekanikk. Energibevaring refererer til prinsippet om at den totale energien i et lukket system forblir konstant over tid, selv om den kan endre form. Konvensjonelle tilnærminger legger til såkalt Itô støy i kildeledd, noe som kontinuerlig tilfører energi. Gradientstøy krever avanserte matematiske verktøy for å håndtere dens komplekse påvirkning på systemene. Vi bruker Stratonovich- og Marcus-type fluktuasjoner for å representere denne støyen i hastighetsfeltene til transportligningene. Prosjektet har som mål å utvikle nye matematiske og numeriske teorier for å håndtere de spesifikke utfordringene som gradientstøy medfører. Vi fokuserer på å forstå superkritiske transportligninger, ikke-lineære bølgeligninger, og kompressibel Navier-Stokes ligninger. Viktige spørsmål er: (1) Har disse stokastiske ligningene en løsning? (2) Er løsningen entydig? (3) Er løsningen stabil ved endringer i inngangsdataene? (4) Hvordan kan løsningen beregnes numerisk?

Our project is at the cutting edge of numerical analysis of SPDEs affected by transport noise. Such equations have emerged as a focal point in mathematical research, due to their critical applications in areas like fluid dynamics, turbulence modeling, and geophysical flows. This heightened interest is driven by the need for deeper understanding and precise analysis of these complex phenomena, where SPDEs offer vital insights and predictive capabilities. What sets our research apart is its emphasis on transport-dominated systems driven by gradient noise operators. Prior numerical analysis studies have explored SPDEs with stochastic forcing, but the examination of gradient noise is still in its infancy. The complexity of gradient noise, involving anisotropic (integro-) differential operators due to stochastic calculus, presents unique challenges. There is a pressing need to develop methods that preserve the hyperbolic structure of these equations. Our project aims to pioneer this field by devising theoretically sound numerical algorithms and creating novel frameworks for stability and convergence. Our work considers supercritical transport equations, nonlinear wave equations, and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Research on stochastic transport equations is inspired by the famous Kraichnan turbulence model, which posits advection through a Gaussian velocity field. Yet, there is a growing consensus that noise in turbulent velocities might be better represented by a Lévy process with jumps. As the second main advancement of our project, we are breaking new ground by pioneering the analysis of SPDEs affected by Marcus-type gradient noise. This area is critically important yet hardly explored, with vast potential for groundbreaking discoveries. Marcus noise is distinct for adhering to the Newton-Leibniz chain rule, which is important in fluid dynamics, unlike the Stratonovich interpretation which fails to do so in the presence of jumps.

NASTRAN: Numerical Analysis of Stochastic TRANsport

Utviklingen av havvind er et viktig element i det grønne skiftet og det forventes å ekspandere betraktelig, også i områder med sjøis i særdeleshet Østersjøen. Her er relativt grunt vann slik at det i hovedsak planlegges og bygges bunnfaste konstruksjoner. EU har mål om å produsere 60GW fra havvind før 2030, og mye av dette vil komme i Østersjøen. Tekniske løsninger for havvind er viktig ikke bare for EU, men svarer også på minst tre av FNs 13 bærekraftmål ((#7, #9, #13) og vil ha indirekte positiv effekt i forhold til fem andre ( (#3, #8, #9, #11 and #12).
Sjøis og is-krefter fra sjøis på havvindsinstallasjoner representerer en av de største usikkerhetene for design og operasjon av havvindsturbiner. De eksisterende standarder og retningslinjer er hovedsakelig gitt i IEC614000-3-1 and DNV-ST-0437, og disse er stort sett basert på "Arctic Offshore structures for the petroleum industry" i ISO19906. Det er to vesentlige forskjeller mellom installasjoner for havvind og for olje og gass. For det første er oljeplattformer større, stivere responderer mye mer statisk, mens vindturbiner er slankere og mer dynamiske. For det andre kan man vanlig vis i Arktis regne med tilnærmet uendelig store drivende krefter fra tung is, men i Østersjøen (og andre områder hvor det planlegges havvind) er det lettere isforhold (isen er mellom 0.3 m og 1.2 m), og de drivende kreftene (fra særlig vind og strøm) kan begrense is-kreftene. Usikkerhetene ligger både i etablering av fordelinger av, og korrelasjoner mellom de relevante is-parameterne (is-tykkelse, konsentrasjon osv.) og i de deterministiske og probabilistiske modeller for å beregne laster og respons. IceWise kommer til å adresse begge disse.

IceWise addresses sea ice actions on offshore wind turbines. Offshore wind is one of the vital renewable energies for the future and Europe wants to reach at least 60 GW installed in EU waters by 2030. This means more wind turbines in the Baltic sea where sea ice is on the the major uncertainties.

IceWise combines the competence of NTNU in ice mechanics and ice actions on offshore structures with competence within satellite remote sensing of sea ice at UiT to carry out world-leading research needed for Norwegian industry to reduce uncertainty in ice action estimations and to pave the way for improved operational planning and standardization of design method for offshore wind turbines.

WP1 Sea ice statistics, WP2 Ice state definition and WP3 Probabilistic modelling, address respectively the sea ice statistics and ridges statistics from satellite remote sensing data (WP1), defining an ice state based on multi-modal data product and calculate deterministic ice loads (WP2) and probabilistic modelling of ice ridge and level ice action (WP3).
The international  DTU-Space (Skourup) will co-supervise the PhD in WP1 (UiT) and we plan for with two full day scientific workshops per year (at NTNU and at Aalto) with the researchers and the PhDs.

Scientific papers published in high level international journals, high qualified personnel (PhD and master students) available for employment in Norwegian industry and development of better standards and guidelines for estimating ice actions on bottom-fixed wind turbines are three major results from the project.

A steering committee with member from all Norwegian partners will meet 4 times per year and ensure good progress. it will also be two full day physical workshop with all partners annually. The PhD students will meet and be challenged by the industry with their applied perspective.

DNV will be invited as observer to IceWise and Høyland is reviewing the new DNV-RP-C205 about ice actions to ensure that IceWise is complementary.

Ice, Wind and Structures

The project aims to develop a high-fidelity MVP of robotic furniture designed to optimize urban living spaces and enhance life quality. This initiative merges advanced robotics and AI with practical design to address space efficiency in densely populated areas.

Key R&D challenges include integrating robotics and AI to create adaptable furniture systems, ensuring safety through rigorous testing and third-party certifications, and applying real-world feedback to refine functionality. The project involves significant technical and regulatory hurdles in engineering consumer-friendly, safe, and responsive furniture.

Starting December 2024, a 2 + 6 months pilot phase with 2 selected Norwegian businesses will test the product's real-world application and collect operational data. Feedback from end-users will be gathered through qualitative interviews, informing iterative improvements to enhance design and functionality.

This project leverages existing scientific, technical, and business knowledge in innovative ways, aiming to develop a unique product that sets new industry standards. It is characterized as experimental development, pushing technological boundaries in furniture design.

By end 2025, feedback and pilot data will be used to finalize a market-ready product, ensuring it meets user needs for functionality and aesthetics. This initiative represents a pioneering effort to transform urban living, combining experimental development with practical application to create sustainable and adaptable living solutions.

Development of high-fidelity MVP of AI driven robotic furniture to be piloted in realistic environment with pilot clients.

I Nordsjøen finnes det organisk rike leirlag som har blitt begravd til flere kilometers dyp. Når slike leirlag blir begravd til flere kilometers dyp, blir de så varme at de begynner å generere olje og gass. Av all oljen og gassen som har blitt generert i Nordsjøen, har hele 98% lekket ut til havet over geologisk tid. Men hvor skjer dette? Hvor mye lekker ut? Hvilke miljøkonsekvenser har det? Hvordan påvirker det planer for CO2-lagring at væsker kan sive ut naturlig noen steder? Og kan det gi ny innsikt i hvor man bør lete etter olje og gass? Dette er spørsmål som InFluSe-prosjektet skal svare på. 

InFluSe står for "Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage". På grunn av de viktige konsekvensene hydrokarbonlekkasje i Nordsjøen har, er det mange som er interessert i dette prosjektet. Prosjektet ledes av Universitetet i Bergen, og har partnere fra industri, akademia og statsadminstrasjon, og disse partnerene inkluderer UiT, Equnior, Vår Energi, AkerBP, Aarhus Universitet, Geomar Kiel, Havforskningsinstituttet og Sokkeldirektoratet. 

I løpet av det første av fire år, skal vi ansette fire PhD-kandidater og gjennomføre et tokt på 20 dager med forskningsskipet G.O. Sars. Den første av PhD-stipendiatene skal bruke satellittdata til å undersøke hvor, når og hvorfor olje lekker i Nordsjøen. Den andre PhDen skal undersøke eksisterende brønn-, kjerne- og seismikk-data fra Nordsjøen for å finne ut hvilke veier hydrokarbonene migrerer under bakken. Den tredje skal samle inn og prosessere nye høy-oppløselige 3D-seismiske data over områder med mye lekkasje for å undersøke hvordan hydrokarbonene kommer seg gjennom takbergartene. Den siste skal undersøke geokjemiske og biologiske prøver fra hydrokarbonoppkommene for å finne ut hvor de kommer fra, hvor lenge de har vert aktive, og hvilke påvirkninger de har på miljøet.

In the Southern Norwegian North Sea (SNNS), analysis of satellite radar data supported by recent scientific cruise activity reveals a previously unknown pattern of natural oil seepage. This seepage pattern indicates the presence of a widespread and previously unknown hydrocarbon migration system. Combined with the extreme availability of subsurface data in the study area and our ability to conduct scientific cruises with state-of-the-art research vessels, the observed seepage pattern makes it possible to characterize and understand migration of fluids in sedimentary basins from source to seep, at a hitherto unparalleled level of detail. Through an integrated and cross-disciplinary research program, the InFluSe project partners will create a complete understanding of hydrocarbon migration and seepage in the SNNS through two scientific cruises, a comprehensive analysis and modelling program, and education of 4 PhDs and >10 MScs in the disciplines of geomatics, subsurface geology, geophysics and geochemistry. Firstly, we will determine the hydrocarbon migration pathways in the SNNS area and develop a baseline of natural hydrocarbon seepage in terms of distribution and rates that past and potential future well-related emissions can be evaluated against. Secondly, improved knowledge about distribution and rates of hydrocarbon seeps in the Norwegian North Sea will make it possible to assess the geological contribution of hydrocarbons, carbon and methane (the most important greenhouse gas after CO2) to the environment and atmosphere, something that is poorly understood from both a conceptual and regional perspective, and may be exacerbated by the shallow depth of seepage here. Thirdly, several CO2 storage licenses are in place in the SNNS and the impact of the observed seepage on the CO2 storage integrity in these areas will be addressed by InFluSe. Finally, understanding of pathways of hydrocarbon migration will help improve play models and de-risk exploration prospects.

Integrated study of Fluid Migration and Seepage in the Southern Norwegian North Sea - Impact on Hydrocarbons, Environment, and CO2 storage

Verden var i endring mellom det 4. og 8. århundre. Det var en tid da Romeriket hadde utfordringer. Gamle sannheter ble stilt spørsmål ved etter hvert som kristendommen påvirket alle nivåer av samfunnet. I denne verdenen sto Romas sentrale fora som selve legemliggjørelsen av romersk tradisjon med sine politiske, historiske og religiøse monumenter. Imidlertid måtte selv de gamle foraene endres. Dermed ble kristen graffiti ristet inn på et av templene deres tidlig på 400-tallet. Graffitiene var et slående resultat av områdets kristning og det tidligste arkeologiske beviset på denne prosessen. Til tross for dette finnes det ingen systematisk analyse av graffitien. Flere er fortsatt upubliserte, samtidig som de gradvis forsvinner på grunn av forurensing. De må dokumenteres nå for å unngå at de skal bli borte. FROG vil 1) digitalt bevare den kristne graffitien, 2) gi ny kunnskap om foraenes bruk og betydning i Roma i tidlig middelalder ved å analysere graffitiene i deres romlige og tidsmessige kontekst, og 3) styrke forståelsen av foraenes rolle i fremveksten av kristen pilegrimsferd og identitet ved å analysere graffitiene i deres kulturelle kontekst. Ved å bruke skriftlige, epigrafiske og arkeologiske kilder analyserer FROG foraenes kristne graffiti, bruk og rolle i Romas kristning gjennom menneskelige handlinger. Analysen er basert på en innovativ kombinasjon av kollektiv minneteori, resilience theory og activity spaces, som gjør det mulig å tolke samspillet mellom foraenes fysiske og mentale landskap. Denne tilnærmingen gir en unik mulighet til å forstå hvordan mennesker fra alle samfunnslag formet foraene for å reflektere deres identitet og behov. Dermed er FROG nyskapende i sitt studiemateriale, sin metode, sitt teoretiske rammeverk og sitt søkelys på et bredere spekter av Romas aktører utenfor eliten. FROG vil resultere i ny kunnskap om utviklingen av det romerske imperiets mest symbolske steder under en avgjørende periode med urban og religiøs forandring.

In the 5th century, Christian graffiti were incised on a temple near the Forum Romanum – the heart of pagan Rome. They were a striking result of the area’s Christianisation - potentially the earliest archaeological evidence of this process. Rome’s Imperial fora and the Forum Romanum were essential cultural, political, economic, and religious centres used and adapted by the city’s inhabitants between the 4th and the 8th centuries. They are thus critical case studies of the Roman Empire’s Christianisation. Their graffiti offer a unique opportunity to examine this process from a non-elite perspective. Despite this, no thorough analysis of these graffiti exists. Several are still unpublished, while pollution is eroding them. They must be documented to avoid ultimate disappearance. FROG will 1) digitally preserve the Christian graffiti, 2) provide new knowledge of the fora’s use and meaning in early medieval Rome by analysing the graffiti in their spatial and temporal context, and 3) enhance the understanding of the fora’s role in the emergence of Christian pilgrimage and identity by analysing the graffiti in their cultural context. Using written, epigraphical, and archaeological sources, FROG analyses the fora’s Christian graffiti, use, and role in Rome’s Christianisation through human acts. The analysis is based on an innovative and ambitious combination of collective memory theory, resilience theory, and activity spaces, enabling the interpretation of the interplay between the fora’s physical and mental landscape. This approach provides a unique opportunity to look beyond elite monuments and understand how humans shaped the fora to reflect their identity and needs. Thus, FROG is innovative in its study material, method, theoretical framework, and focus on a broader range of Rome’s actors beyond the elite. This will result in new knowledge on the development of the Roman Empire’s most symbolically important sites during a crucial period of urban and religious change.

The Fora of Rome and their Christian Graffiti (4th-8th centuries)

Prosjektet vil bruke avanserte massespektrometriske teknikker for å utvikle testprotokoller som kan redusere usikkerheten i data fra såkalt spesiell kjerneanalyse (SCAL). SCAL er et samlebegrep for visse laboratorietester utført på prøver av reservoarstein (borekjerner) og fluid fra oljereservoaret for å bestemme viktige reservoartekniske egenskaper. Den mest grunnleggende egenskapen på poreskala er hvordan reservoarsteinen fuktes av reservoarfluidene. Dette styrer i stor grad mobiliteten til olje, vann og gass i porerommene og påvirker dermed utvinningsprosessen.

Et ideelt krav for representative og pålitelige SCAL-data er at kjerneprøvene har beholdt sine opprinnelige fuktegenskaper når de leveres til laboratoriet. Det kan være stor usikkerhet knyttet til dette. Vanlig laboratoriepraksis er derfor å rense ut alle reservoarfluider og mulige rester av borevæske fra kjerneprøvene med ulike løsemidler for så å forsøke gjenoppretting av opprinnelige fuktforhold i kjernene ved å mette dem på nytt under kontrollerte forhold med olje produsert fra reservoaret. Om opprinnelige fuktforhold kan gjenopprettes på denne måten skal undersøkes ved å sammenligne den massespektrometriske profilen av oljekomponenter ekstrahert fra poreoverflatene i kjerneprøvene med profilen til olje produsert fra formasjonen. De massespektrometriske teknikkene som skal anvendes tillater bestemmelse av molekylvekt til individuelle oljekomponenter med en oppløsning som er høy nok til å identifisere elementformelen til hver forbindelse i oljen. Sammenligning av komponentprofilene til adsorberte hydrokarboner og mobil olje kan indikere om observerte fukt-egenskaper til en reservoarkjerne representerer opprinnelig reservoarforhold eller er påvirket av hvordan kjernen er behandlet før SCAL-analysen.

Mer pålitelige laboratoriedata vil gi bedre operasjonelle beslutninger, mindre risiko for mislykkede investeringer og bedre sjanser for optimalisering, både med hensyn til utvunnet oljevolum og energibruk.

Special core analysis (SCAL) is a set of laboratory procedures to determine essential reservoir engineering properties like oil displacement, permeability and wettability by conducting various tests on reservoir material. These properties – wettability in particular – are important to assess the resources in place, estimate fluid flow characteristics and in developing optimal strategies for hydrocarbon recovery. More reliable laboratory data will lead to better operational decisions, less risk of failed investments, and better chances of optimization, in regard both to oil volumes recovered and energy expended. Wettability is the most basic rock-fluid interaction at pore level. It largely governs the mobility of reservoir fluids and their distribution in the pore spaces and thereby affects oil recovery processes. A fundamental requirement for representative and reliable SCAL data is that core samples retain their original wettability when delivered to the laboratory or that the original wettability can be restored. It is hypothesized that the most surface-active components in an oil, being minority oil components containing elements such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur, will adsorb on the rock surface and thus determine the wettability. If originally only present in small amounts these components might not be present in the mobile oil, and if they are removed during core preparation (by use of strong solvents) it will not be possible to restore original wettability. The uncertainties of SCAL related to wettability can be reduced by an increased knowledge about the minority oil components. The hypothesis will be tested on representative reservoir rock and fluid samples. Employment of cutting-edge high- and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry techniques will be pivotal to the project. Comparison of the compound profiles of hydrocarbons adsorbed to the pore surfaces and oil produced from the relevant reservoir formation will be a key element of the analysis.

Testing the foundations of special core analysis

Løsningene til disse ligningene tar form av geometriske figurer, som kan klassifiseres i grunnleggende byggeklosser.

Disse byggeklossene er kjent som Fano-mangfoldigheter, oppkalt etter den italienske matematikeren Gino Fano, som først påviste deres eksistens i geometrien. Forestill deg at du er en oppdagelsesreisende i et vidstrakt hav som representerer universet av matematiske former og geometrier. Dette havet er bestrødd med øyer, hver av dem unik i form, størrelse og egenskaper, som representerer forskjellige matematiske objekter. Fano-mangfoldigheter er som en særegen gruppe øyer med fascinerende egenskaper. De fungerer som grunnleggende elementer for mer komplekse øyer som ennå er uutforsket.

Akkurat som en øy som er lett å utforske fordi den har mange guider, er Fano-manfoldigheter, på grunn av deres “ampleness”-egenskap, mer tilgjengelige for studier sammenlignet med andre matematiske objekter. Fano-manfoldigheter kan betraktes som en omfattende kategori som inkluderer objekter vi allerede har en god forståelse av. De er knyttet til flere viktige konsepter innen geometri og tallteori, inkludert studiet av rasjonelle punkter, en sentral del av tallteorien.

Ruddats forskningsprosjekt har som mål å øke betydningen av Fano-mangfoldigheter i algebra, geometri og teoretisk fysikk. Prosjektet søker å klassifisere disse formene og lage en katalog, på lik linje med det periodiske systemet for grunnstoffer i kjemi. For å oppnå dette målet, vil nye teknikker fra speilsymmetri, logaritmisk og tropisk geometri bli brukt.

Systems of polynomial equations are extensively used in technology and science applications, ranging from basic chemistry and physics to economics and social science. The geometrical shape of the solution can be classified if one understands the fundamental building blocks. Mori Theory has identified these fundamental blocks as Fano manifolds. Building on prior work of successful ERC and EPSRC projects centered at the Imperial College London, Shape2030 will turn Stavanger in Norway into the center and knowledge base for the next imminent breakthrough in the foundational knowledge production of Fano manifolds and to complete the directory for Fanos of dimension three and four.
Fano manifolds and more generally log Calabi-Yau manifolds lie at the heart of the enumerative mirror symmetry conjecture (EMS), the homological mirror symmetry conjecture (HMS) and the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture (SYZ). Using novel cutting edge techniques from logarithmic and tropical geometry, Shape2030 will make substantial progress on these conjectures and aim to solve EMS and SYZ. Unique new information about wall structures and torus fibrations will lead to groundbreaking new discoveries that enable future generations of scientists and provide benefit Norway's scientific and skilled labor landscape. 
The project team consist of 16 diverse team members: 5 local in Norway and 11 at strategically chosen international centers. Thesis writing students will be equiped with unique skill sets in mathematical problem solving, artificial intelligence and advanced techniques in geometry and polynomial equations. 
The proposal is set out to enable the achievement of the United Nation goals on economic growths, innovation and quality education and it facilitates the green transition by advancing the understanding of fundamental mathematics, e.g., about solutions to polynomial equations which underlies – among others – fields like geometric modelling, clean energy and robust engineering.

Fano manifolds, wall structures and torus fibrations

Noen av de mest mangfoldige slektene på planeten vår finnes på øyer. Likevel er øyer ofte avsidesliggende og isolerte, og øyarter har små populasjonsstørrelser som gjør naturlig utvalg mindre effektivt og fører til høyere utryddelsesrater. Dette skaper et paradoks: hvordan kan vi observere så stort biologisk mangfold på øyer hvis forholdene tilsynelatende er ugunstige for diversifisering?

I dette prosjektet har vi som mål å utforske dette spørsmålet ved å sekvensere genomer fra tusenfryd (familie Asteraceae) på Galápagos. Vi vil fokusere på tre slekter som er hjemmehørende på Galápagos: Darwiniothamnus, Lecocarpus og Scalesia. Ved å analysere genetiske data håper vi å avdekke hvordan endringer i populasjonsstørrelse, artsdannelse, kolonisering av nye miljøer og populasjonsvekst har bidratt til diversifisering. Vi vil også identifisere genomiske trekk forbundet med diversifisering, med fokus på utviklingen av strukturelle varianter og pangenom-variasjon.

This proposal will study how isolated lineages generate and maintain genetic diversity. Three replicate radiations of the sunflower family on the Galápagos Islands – Scalesia, Lecocarpus and Darwiniothamnus will be investigated. Despite the constraints imposed by founder events, small population sizes, and inbreeding, these radiations exhibit remarkable ecological and phenotypic diversity, prompting the question: how do isolated lineages generate and maintain genetic diversity?

Understanding the mechanisms of genetic diversity generation and maintenance is crucial for predicting the ability of species to recover from human-induced population declines. Habitat fragmentation, habitat destruction, and climate change are rapidly diminishing species diversity worldwide, making it imperative to identify the factors that contribute to the recovery of genetic variation. In this context, insular lineages can serve as model systems as their outstanding diversity arises following a founder event. The findings of this research will directly inform conservation efforts by collaboration with the GalápagosVerde2050 project.

Our research will employ molecular and bioinformatic methods. This includes the ancestral recombination graph to determine the age of genetic variation of different genomic regions, comparing empirical to simulated data, and assessing the role of structural variants and pangenomes in local adaptation. We aim to produce three high-impact manuscripts that offer insights into the generation and maintenance of genetic diversity.

GCE NODE skal, sammen med bedrifter fra klyngen, delta på Norway Asia Business Summit (NABS) som holdes i Shanghai, Kina, fra 31. oktober til 2. november. GCE NODE er programpartner for NABS og skal, i samarbeid med GCE Ocean Technology og GCE Blue Maritime, arrangere et fire timers seminar med fokus på crossover teknologi fra olje&gass og inn i nye blå næringer. 

I dagene før NABS, planlegges det et besøk til Qingdao og miljøet i/rundt Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNML). 

Reisen er godt forankret i GCE NODEs strategi og et samarbeid med kinesiske institusjoner vil være vesentlig i klyngens arbeide med å 1) opprettholde og styrke deltagerbedriftenes globale konkurranseposisjon i dagens kjernemarkeder og 2) overføre kompetanse og teknologier til nye markeder. GCE NODE har siden 2018 arbeidet med å styrke samarbeidet med Kina og det ble bla arrangert et besøk hos QNML høsten 2018 for å identifisere mulige samarbeidsområder. GCE NODE er nå, sammen med NORCE, i ferd med å etablere en MoU med QNML for videre FoU-samarbeid. Qingdao er vennskapsby med Kristiansand og det arbeides målrettet med å etablere et økt samarbeid mellom næringsliv og akademia i disse to byene. Det planlegges en signeringssermoni for MoU’en mellom QNML, GCE NODE og NORCE i forbindelse mellom et offisielt møte mellom de to byene.

Etablering av norsk-kinesiske samarbeidsprosjekter innen havteknologi.

GCE NODE reiser, sammen med flere bedrifter fra klyngen og NORCE, til Houston i uke 18 og 19 for å delta på/arrangere Agders/N2OTC OTC program og for å stå på GCE NODEs felles-stand under OTC-messen. Flere av de planlagte møtene/arrangementene under oppholdet har som hovedmål å legge grunnlag for nye samarbeidsprosjekter mellom norske og amerikanske aktører, bla: 

- NorTex Data Science Seminar: Harnessing Energy – Trends, opportunities, challenges and needs (3. mai)
- Agder Business Networking Reception (5. mai)
- GCE Subsea valley's  og GCE Ocean Technology's Technology Breakfast (7. mai)

I tillegg vil det bli en rekke spontane/uformelle møter underveis ifm N2OTC-programmet og messen.

GCE NODE har, sammen med bedrifter fra klyngen, deltatt på OTC hvert år siden 2009 og hatt en fellesstand med økende deltakelse på messen siden 2015. Reisen er således godt forankret i klyngens strategi.

Etablering av norsk-amerikanske samarbeidsprosjekter innen digitalisering, nye forretningsmodeller og energiproduksjon

GCE NODE reiser til Japan i uke 23 sammen med representanter fra Teknova, IRIS og Christian Michelsen Research. Følgende møter planlegges gjennomført: 

5. juni: Workshop med fokus på å konkretisere mulige samarbeidsprosjekter mellom Nippon Foundation og GCE NODE, IRIS, CMR og Teknova.

6. juni: Presentasjon av samarbeidet med Nippon Foundation under Joint Committee møtet mellom norske og japanske myndigheter

7. juni: Mottagelse hos ambassadør Rimestad. Både GCE NODE, CMR, Teknova, IRIS og Nippon Foundation er invitert

I tillegg vurderer GCE NODE å delta på en workshop som NTNU Ocean arrangerer i Kobe på temaet Deep Sea Mining den 28. mai 2018. Møtene i juni vil bli fulgt opp gjennom en ny workshop i løpet av høsten 2018 der målet er å jobbe fram helt konkrete prosjektforslag innen de ulike fokusområdene. 

Reisen er godt forankret i GCE NODEs strategi og et samarbeid med japanske institusjoner vil være vesentlig i klyngens arbeide med å 1) opprettholde og styrke deltagerbedriftenes globale konkurranseposisjon i dagens kjernemarkeder og 2) overføre kompetanse og teknologier til nye markeder. GCE NODE har siden 2016 arbeidet med å styrke samarbeidet med Japan og det ble bla arrangert et besøk hos Nippon Foundation høsten 2017 for å identifisere mulige samarbeidsområder.

Etablering av norsk-japanske samarbeidsprosjekter innen offshore og blå vekst

Increasing energy efficiency is a real challenge for society and the industry and the subject of advanced functional materials is recognized as a top priority in providing technological solutions for a sustainable energy future. Functional materials constitute  already a significant element of worldwide research efforts in a number of areas of activity including solar energy materials for converting solar radiation into electricity and chemical fuels, hydrogen storage materials and materials for thermoelectric (TE) energy harvesting via the direct recovery of waste heat and its conversion into useful electrical energy. In particular, the prospects for industrial applications of TE materials are generating increased activity in this field by demanding materials with sustainable scale-up potential.

EuroTEG is fully committed to contribute to this important R&D endeavour and it will deliver new, affordable, robust and transformational thermoelectric technology for real-world industrial applications. This will be achieved by investigating the extended in-service life of advanced thermoelectric materials with demonstrated enhanced performance and that are relatively cheap, widely available, non-toxic, lightweight, practicable in size, vibration-tolerant and scalable.

The core concept of the EuroTEG project revolves around investigating the extended in-service life of thermoelectric materials with characteristics of sustainable scalability for integration into proof-of-concept TE modules. This class of functional materials would have the following characteristics:
-Demonstrated TE performance for both n-type and p-type doped material;
-Abundant with low abiotic depletion potential (ADP);
-Non-toxic and potential compliance with REACH and RoHS obligations;
-Operational in the temperature range 300-550ºC, important for waste heat recovery;
-High chemical stability, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength;
-Low raw material cost combined with low manufacturing cost

Extended in-service life of scalable functional materials for sustainable energy harvesting with thermoelectric technology

Omlag 60 % av all energi som produseres går i dag tapt som spillvarme. De største tapene er innen energiproduksjonsektoren, men både transportsektoren og industrien følger tett etter. For eksempel utnytter en bil kun i underkant av 40 % av energi en som tilføres gjennom drivstoffet, resten tapes som varme i eksos- og kjølesystemet. 
Termoelektrisitet er en kommende teknologi for omdanning av spillvarme til elektrisk kraft. Takket være fordeler som fravær av bevegelige deler, høy pålitelighet og la vt vedlikeholdsbehov, er denne teknologien lovende innen mange områder, som f.eks. gjenvinning av eksosvarme i biler og lastebiler, gjenvinning av spillvarme i landbasert industri, skip og off-shore anlegg og energiproduksjon innen luft- og romfart.
TEGmas visjon er å bli en ledende leverandør av høytemperatur termoelektriske materialer og moduler til bruk i termoelektriske generatorer for varmegjenvinning. For å kunne oppnå dette, må TEGma utvikle effektive og holdbare material- og modulløsninger samt industrielt skalerbare produksjonsprosesser for disse. På material-siden har vi allerede lyktes med å utvikle et meget effektivt termoelektrisk materiale og vi har også identifisert og påbegynt utprøving av lovende konsepter for metallisering av disse og sammenkobling av elementer til en modul. Videre hovedfokus i prosjektet vil ligge innen optimalisering av material, metallisering og sammenføyningsmetoder, produksjon av prototype termoelektriske moduler og pålitelighetstesting av både enkeltkomponenter og sammensatt modul. Arbeidet vil bli utført i nært samarbeid med ledende spesialister ved Sintef og Universitetet i Agder.

As an example, more th an 60% of the energy that goes into an automotive combustion cycle is lost, primarily to waste heat through the exhaust or radiator system.

Thermoelectricity (TE)is a promising source of electric power, thanks to its ability to locally scavenge energy by  converting a heat flow into electricity when placing a thermoelectric device (TEG) in a persistent thermal gradient. Even with a modest conversion yield, this would have huge benefits. As a consequence, many applications are being imagined for local ener gy production by the thermoelectric effect thanks to local heat leakages. Examples are exhaust heat recovery in cars and trucks, waste heat recovery in land based and off-shore industry and power generation in aeronautic and space applications.

TEGma AS  was established as a subsidiary of Scatec in 2012. The vision of TEGma is to become a leading supplier of high temperature TE materials for use in TEGs for waste heat recovery applications in the automotive and process industry. To achieve this, TEGma nee ds to develop high efficiency and high durability material solutions. On the material side, TEGma already works closely with the German Aerospace Center to develop high efficiency bulk TE materials and industrially scalable processes for the production of  these. However, the thermoelectric materials also faces challenges related to thermal stability and issues related to the thermal and electrical connection of the elements into the finished thermoelectric generator. These challenges will be the main focu s of this R&D project which will be carried out in close cooperation with highly skilled experts within the relevant disciplines at Sintef Materials and Chemistry and the University of Agder.

TEGma AS is a new company, established by Scatec AS in 2012. The business idea of TEGma is to produce high temperature thermoelectric materials of high efficiency and by thi s to bring a new generation of thermoelectric generators to the market. Through this project, TEGma aims to develop a industrially scaleable process for production of thermoelectric materials to the new emerging waste heat recovery technologies within aut omotive and process industry.

TEGma's team with expertise in the field of industrial development in the relevant technological fields will cooperate with Sintef and the University of Agder as research partners in the project. The project will also collab orate with other national and foreign research institutions as University of Oslo (Dept. of Chemistry) and German Aerospace Center in Cologne.

Thermoelectic material production

Through this project Norsk Titanium Technology AS (NTiT) aims to develop a direct production process for titanium metal via electrolysis with oxycarbide anodes. The expected metal powder product from the process is perfectly suited for making wire feedsto ck to the new titanium component production process developed by Norsk Titanium Components AS (NTiC). This new processing route from raw material to titanium components is representing a game changing opportunity for the titanium industry. It allows for t he use of low-grade titanium ores, and it can eliminate several processing steps upstream and downstream and thereby reducing energy consumption, production cost and production time for titanium components significantly.

The fundamentals of the electroly tic process have already been identified in cooperation with SINTEF in a previous BIP project sponsored by NFR, and the objective of the current project is to develop and document process understanding further, to the extent that pilot production of titan ium can be implemented.

The process must produce titanium powder of sufficiently large particle size to allow for it to be extracted without reacting with oxygen or other reactive species. The challenge is therefore to describe the process mechanisms for  all sub-processes, and use the knowledge to design and demonstrate a process capable of producing titanium of sufficient quality. NTiT's team with expertise in the field of industrial development in the relevant technological fields will cooperate with U iA, Teknova and SINTEF as research partners in the project.

The current initiatives by NTiT and NTiC are driven by Scatec which is a Norwegian based think-tank and innovator in the materials industry. Scatec is utilizing Norwegian resources and internati onal networks to grow new sustainable industry, within the areas of renewable energy and advanced materials, and has previously successfully launched REC, PhotoCure and several other ground-breaking ventures.
