This project focuses on the production, properties and performance of new materials and products in the iron- and steel industry in an effort to disclose the fundamentals of non-metallic dispersoids acting as catalyzers for the nucleation of the primary c rystals in liquid steel and the secondary precipitates in the solid. Emphasis is also on joining skilled and experienced people and on education of researchers for the industry. Due to the anticipated high costs and restrictions of green house gas emissions new or improved production and processing technologies will emerge in European iron- and steel industry: • “New” less carbon intensive iron making processes producing clean iron. • Near net shape casting techniques simplifying the processing chain. • Improved and increased Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) production/smelting of steel. Products based on Norwegian ferroalloys and natural gas have an important role to play for the successful development of the above processes through grain refining of as cast steel and “Disarmament” of harmful trace elements. On basis of current knowledge and proposed experimental work, this project will establish a better understanding of the relationships between processing, structure and characteristic properties of materials as well as its implications on industrial proces s design and operation.
