Effects of energetic electron precipitation on the upper atmosphere

Awarded: NOK 2.1 mill.

The main objective of this project is to study the effects of the electron precipitation on the upper atmosphere, such as changes in the chemical composition with focus on changes in the NO concentration, NO plays a crucial role in the lower thermosphere and in the upper mesosphere, and can destroy parts of the ozone layer if transported down to these altitudes. This project will use data from several spacecraft, POLAR, SNOE, TIMED and UARS, as well as ground based observations from ALOMAR and EISCAT in N orthern Norway. The project is central in relation to two new extensive international research programs: The ILWS (International Living With a Star) program, which ESA is involved in, and the SCOSTEP program CAWSES (Climate and Weather of the Sun Earth S ystem).
