Nature and science in politics and everyday practices

Awarded: NOK 2.9 mill.

The project will investigate the production and mediation of "nature" and "the natural" in scientific, political and everyday practices. It will focus on science as an important producer of material realities and naturalised power. By examining the creati on and reshaping of nature-relevant boundaries between the human, the animal, the technical and the biological, one will map variations and stabilities in these boundaries. The project will do so across time and at different levels of scale, focusing in p articular on the role of science, its practices, and its political and social materialisations. The project will use tools recently developed in the cultural analysis of science and technology (STS), and will explore and develop these through three case s tudies in Norway: a history of veterinary politics and practice; contemporary changes in understandings and practices of Alzheimer's disease; and changing discourses and practices about the wolf.
