Abnormal waves

Awarded: NOK 40,000

The purpose is to strengthen the relations between the National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), Japan, and Department of Marine Technology, NTNU, by the proposed collaborative research on abnormal waves. The goal for the research project is to establi sh a model describing abnormal (rogue) waves valid for random ocean waves on shear flows. The project is divided into two tasks: 1. The propagation of ocean waves on shear flows will be considered. This is a theoretical study applying an asymptotic pertur bation method (WKB) on linear and non-linear regular ocean waves. 2. This method will be extended to stochastic processes valid for random ocean waves on shear flows. The proposed project will add to the understanding of the mechanisms concerning the gene ration of rogue waves. Moreover, the results may ultimately represent a useful tool for giving better estimates of wave loads and wave impacts of high waves on marine structures.
