Arms Against a Sea of Troubles: Ethics and the New Trends in Military Intervention

Awarded: NOK 2.4 mill.

The aim of this project is to chart the ethical issues raised by new trends in military intervention and to develop an innovative set of scholarly principles and methods in order to address them. Through an international collaboration between specialists in the fields of political science, philosophy, psychology, gender and ethnic studies, and history, it will unite empirical experience from the field with philosophical reflection on the reach and limitations of human rights and international law. It will thus seek to answer the emerging challenge of military intervention with a new understanding of the relation between those who undertake interventions and those undergo them, guided by the insight that objects of intervention are also ethical subjects, c apable of formulating their own ethical standpoints.
