Wave-Current Interactions and Transport Mechanisms in the Ocean

Awarded: NOK 2.3 mill.

The project aims to develop and apply a Large Eddy Scale ocean model capable of calculating the three-dimensional turbulent ocean flow from the bottom to the free surface, where the latter forms part of the solution. Such a solver will be able to resolve the large three-dimensional turbulent structures in the ocean. This facilitates predictions of flow phenomena which can not be predicted with present models. The project will study the wave-current interaction in the ocean with this model. Of particular i nterest is the interaction between the free surface and the flow deeper in the water column. This model also facilitates a study of e.g. wave-wave interactions in the sea with a current present.
