Strong Turbulence in Magnetized Plasmas.

Awarded: NOK 2.3 mill.

Project Number:

166775

Application Type:

Project Period:

2005 - 2007

Funding received from:

Location:

The proposed project involves a theoretical, numerical and empirical investigation of nonlinear waves in plasmas. Both analytical and numerical tools will be developed and used to explore mechanisms of wave-wave and wave-particle interactions in modulatio nally unstable waves. A core part of the project comprises the development of a generalized fluid model of strong turbulence. The project is relevant to phenomena in plasma torus experiments, as well as to a wide range of plasmas in Nature. The model deve lopment and predictions will be linked with measured data from toroidal plasma laboratories, in particular the Blaaman Experiment in Tromso. Also, the project will be linked with data from the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere, obtained with the EISCAT radar experiment, as well as with the Freja, Cluster II and STEREO satellite. Apart from publishing results in international science journals, the fellowship applicant wishes to present points of interest to the general public through popular science ma gazines, popular talks, etc.
