When choice determines circumstances

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

New genetic methods allow parents to screen for certain undesirable traits and select away embryos with these traits. The same methods will, at least if they are developed, also allow positive selection. Parents could get the opportunity to select for tra its that they believed to be desirable. The possibility of genetic enhancement of embryos introduces some fundamental ethical questions. The focus in this research project, that we have named "When choice determines circumstances", is not primarily on the ethical permissibility of such manipulations, but rather on the implications for income distribution and distributive justice. As part of the research project, the research group plan to visit Harvard University for six months.
