The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

Sjøisen i Arktis har minket drastisk de siste tiårene, og Polhavet forventes å være isfritt om sommeren mot slutten av århundret. Denne nedgangen har utsatt store havområder for vind, noe som har resultert i at det oftere dannes store bølger i Polhavet. Disse bølgene kan forplante seg over flere titalls til hundrevis av kilometer i sjøisen, knekke den og akselerere smeltingen. Disse fysiske prosessene – bølger som knekker sjøis og effekten dette har på sjøissmelting og vekst – mangler i modellene vi bruker for å forutsi klimautviklingen. Dette bidrar til store usikkerheter i klimamodeller. Effekten av bølger på sjøisen er heller ikke tatt med i prognoser for havets og sjøisens forhold, som brukes av skip som opererer i islagte farvann. I ForWArd ønsker vi å vurdere bølgenes innvirkning på sjøisens utvikling i det stadig røffere Polhavet. I dette arbeidet brukes en svært avansert modell som inkluderer sjøis, hav, bølger og deres interaksjoner. Vi skal først vurdere hvor godt den representerer forholdene i Polhavet sammenlignet med de få tilgjengelige observasjonene. Vi vil så bruke modellen til å undersøke hvordan bølgehøyden og arealet av ødelagt sjøis har utviklet seg de siste tre tiårene. Deretter vil vi kombinere modellen vår med forholdene i det fremtidige Polhavet gitt av klimafremskrivninger, for å undersøke hvordan betydningen av interaksjoner mellom bølger og is vil utvikle seg ettersom sjøis avtar i det 21. århundre. Vår modells estimering av "bølgepåvirkningen" vil tillate polarvitenskapsmiljøet å vurdere hvor usikre deres klimaspådommer uten bølger er. Til syvende og sist vil våre modellresultater og utviklinger legge grunnlaget for å legge til bølgeeffekter i hav- og sjøisvarsler i Arktis. Dette vil gjøre varslene mer nøyaktige og bidra til sikkerheten for menneskelig aktivitet i denne regionen.

Arctic sea ice decline under climate change has allowed waves to form and grow more easily in the Arctic Ocean. These waves propagate into the sea ice over tens to hundreds of kilometres, fragmenting it into small floes. This area of broken ice, known as the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), is a highly complex region where many interactions occur between the ocean, sea ice, and atmosphere. The action of waves strongly affects these interactions, with rapid feedbacks on the sea ice. However, climate models do not account for these wave-ice interaction processes, which likely contributes to the strong biases in their estimation of modelled sea ice extent and volume and their inability to capture short-term sea ice extent variability. Given the lack of observations available, numerical models remain the best way to estimate how wave-ice interaction processes can impact Arctic sea ice, but most wave-ice coupled models are still prototypes. In ForWArd, we will use one of the most advanced of these models to assess this impact in the context of climate change. To this aim, we will use the latest observations to calibrate the modelled wave-affected area and produce a 30-year-long hindcast of the MIZ extent evolution to analyse how it responded to larger wave height, delayed refreezing, and thinner ice. Then, we will assess the relative importance of the wave-ice interactions suspected to affect sea ice in the MIZ using well-documented events. Finally, we will estimate how waves will contribute to sea ice extent and volume variability in the coming decades, as large areas of open water will remain open until late in the autumn. The flexibility of our setup will allow us to test the sensitivity of our results to model resolution and assumptions, giving invaluable insights into the biases induced by misrepresenting wave-ice interactions. ForWArd will also pave the way for the integration of wave effects in sea ice forecasts, a requirement for safer operations in ice-infested waters.

Fangst- og håndteringstress påvirker fiskens kjøttkvalitet eller overlevelsesevne dersom den blir sluppet fri. I WelTuna er målet vårt å minimere disse stressorene i for å forbedre velferd, bærekraft og produktkvalitet av makrellstørje i det norske stangfisket.
Kystnært stangfiske etter makrellstørje fra mindre fartøy har økt raskt i omfang for rekreasjon-, kommersielle- og vitenskapelige formål. Stangfiske har betydelig potensiale som velferdsvennlig fangstmetode, da metoden i motsetning til andre påvirker fisken i relativt kort tid og hver fisk blir håndtert individuelt.
Prosjektteamet vårt bestående av forskere, fiskere, fiskeriforvaltning, fiskekjøpere, foredlingsindustri, dyrevelferdsgrupper og andre interesseorganisasjoner fra hele verden, vil bruke de nyeste metodene og teknologien til å overvåke velferdstilstand under fangst, håndtering og slakting og relatere dette til kvalitet på individnivå. Denne kunnskapen vil så danne grunnlaget for utvikling av fangst- og håndteringsmetoder som minimerer stress og opprettholder høy kjøttkvalitet forebygger utilsiktet slipping av makrellstørje samt reduksjon i bifangst. Vi vil også gjennomføre studier av struktur og aktivitet i hjerne hos makrellstørje for å utvikle humane bedøvelsesmetoder som reduserer stress under håndtering og slakting.
Tilslutt vil vi, i samarbeid med internasjonale eksperter innen makrellstørje biologi og kvalitet, utarbeide beste-praksis-retningslinjer for fangst, håndtering, slakting, lagring og kvalitetskontroll. Vi håper at vårt fokus på bærekraft, god velferd og høy kvalitet vil fungere som en inspirasjon for utviklingen av ansvarlige fangstmetoder med fokus på fiskevelferd både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

This project will improve animal welfare in wild-capture rod-and-line (R&L) fisheries for Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT; Thunnus thynnus). By improving welfare, the project intends to minimise the environmental impacts of fishing through improvements to sustainability and product quality.

Since the re-establishment of the Norwegian ABT quota, the traditional capture method (purse seine) has not been efficient or profitable. As purse seiners target aggregations of fish, animal welfare  and product quality are easily compromised. In 2022, only 48% of the 315-tonne purse seine quota was caught.

A rod-and-line (R&L) fishery using coastal powerboats has also developed. In 2022, ~100 ABT were caught by R&L for recreational, commercial and scientific purposes. R&L capture overcomes many of the issues associated with purse seine fishing. Catching fish one-by-one gives the opportunity to maintain welfare and quality at the individual level. Norwegian R&L fishing for ABT is therefore well placed to transition towards an animal welfare conscious and environmentally sustainable fish capture method. However, knowledge gaps exist that hinder this transition:

1.	Lack of knowledge of the animal welfare impacts of capture and slaughter;
2.	Sub-optimal handling practices and limited processing infrastructure
3.	Limited understanding of ABT behaviour and distribution
4.	Bycatch and escape rates are unknown

The project is organised into four scientific work-packages (“Capture”, “Stunning”, “Welfare” and “Quality”) and a management WP to coordinate activities and communication. Fundamental to the project design is that every fish caught will be used by each scientific WP, with each using specific methodologies to address their respective objectives. The project will also benefit from the input of various stakeholders, including fishers, fishery managers, fish buyers, fish processors, animal welfare agencies and NGOs.

Welfare conscious capture and slaughter of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) in the Norwegian rod and line fishery.

Den internasjonale sjøfartsorganisasjonen (IMO) har satt et mål om å redusere klimagassutslippene (GHG) fra skipsfarten med 50 % innen 2050 sammenlignet med 2008-nivået. For å oppnå dette, innfører IMO avkarboniseringsregler, inkludert bruk av alternative drivstoff og krav om å regne ut drivstoffets GHG-utslipp på en helhetlig måte. Livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff omfatter utslipp fra råvareutvinning og -behandling, drivstoffproduksjon, transport, distribusjon og drivstoffbruk om bord på skipet. Men det er vanskelig å spore livsløpsutslipp av drivstoff nøyaktig på grunn av de mange drivstoffproduksjonsveiene som fører til svært forskjellige utslippsintensiteter for drivstoff, selv om drivstoffene er kjemisk identiske. I tillegg er drivstofforsyningskjeden for maritim sektor svært kompleks, noe som bidrar til vanskelighetsgraden av oppgaven. I et så komplekst drivstoffproduksjons- og reguleringsmiljø er det avgjørende med åpenhet, sporbarhet og nøyaktighet av utslippsdata. Uten å dokumentere og verifisere drivstoffets GHG-utslipp nøyaktig, er det umulig å måle framgangen i maritim avkarbonisering. Det digitale drivstoffpasset (DFP) har som mål å løse disse utfordringene ved å vise at det er mulig å dokumentere, spore og verifisere GHG-utslipp av marine drivstoff på tvers av drivstofforsyningskjeden. Dette vil bli oppnådd ved å bruke teknologiske byggesteiner: Livsløpsvurderingsmetode, drivstoffmerkingsteknologi og blokkjedeteknologi. Disse teknologiene er tilgjengelige og allerede godt etablerte. Etter vellykket demonstrasjon av prosjektet, kan drivstoffprodusenter, rederier og myndigheter stole på nøyaktigheten av dataene som genereres og deles gjennom DFP-systemet for kommersielle, regulatoriske og rapporteringsbehov. Dette hjelper med å spore utslippsreduksjonsmål for alle parter. Det fremmer også åpenhet, ansvarlighet, samarbeid og handling for bærekraft.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) only regulates the greenhouse gas emission of fuels from Tank-To-Wake but in the coming few years it is set to include Well-To-Tank emissions as well. We anticipate that documenting and verifying Well-To-Tank emissions of fuels will be more difficult than Tank-To-Wake emissions, primarily due to the multitude of feedstocks, energy sources and fuel production ways used to supply fuels. The Digital Fuel Passport project aims to accurately document and verify emissions incurred in the entire fuel value chain from raw material sourcing to fuel use, incorporating both Well-To-Tank and Tank-To-Wake emissions.
The DFP fosters collaboration among stakeholders within the fuel supply chain. The project will be enabled through multidisciplinary convergence of LCA of fuel emissions, fuel marking and laboratory analysis, and the use of distributed ledger technology. This initiative aims to bridge the existing trust gap among fuel suppliers, fuel users, regulators, and society at large. By doing so, it seeks to establish transparency, accuracy, and a consistent methodology for measuring and reporting emissions throughout the entire fuel value chain.  
To accomplish this objective, the project has formed partnerships with shipping companies, fuel producers, certification bodies, and fuel marking companies, all of whom share a vested interest in achieving the project's objectives. Successful completion of the project will represent a pivotal milestone in the pursuit of the IMO decarbonization target. By documenting emissions incurred throughout the fuel value chain, the DFP project empowers stakeholders with the transparency and trust needed to help the shipping industry to decarbonize. Several R&D challenges will be tackled in the project including how to link fuel emission data efficiently and reliably with fuel marker properties and identification of suitable fuel markers for green marine fuels.

Digital Fuel Passport

AQUASERV – RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE, FISHERIES AND THE BLUE ECONOMY

The overarching objectives of AQUASERV are to bring together, enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities (including facilities, instruments and expertise) and through the provision of transnational access (on-site or remote) and/or virtual access, to significantly further scientific advance and promote and facilitate the implementation of European Common Fisheries Policy, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy and the European Green Deal. 

AQUASERV will achieve these objectives by offering scientists from academia and business remote and on-site transnational (TA) and virtual (VA) access to an advanced set of European research infrastructures and its nodes related to research and management of marine and freshwater biological resources, food and biotechnology. These include the European Marine Biological Resource Centre ERIC (EMBRC), the Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems ERIC, The Aquaculture for Excellence for Aquaculture in Fish (Aquaexcel), and the Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition (METROFOOD), as well as the International Council for Exploration of the Sea, both a service provider and stakeholder. It also includes the Research Infrastructure for Science and Innovation Policy Studies (RISIS) to bring contributions from the social sciences and to bring results nearer to policy makers ensuring societal impact. 

To enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities, collaboration between partners and new pipelines to meet the objectives of the project will be developed during the first 3 years and will make available  to users.  To ensure these capacities will not be lost, a sustainability work package involving stakeholders will address the project legacy.  

To maximize impact, AQUASERV will build a communication network among the partnership and develop a dissemination and outreach programme. Furthermore, an advanced training programme will be developed to capture future users and will be updated during the p

Akvakultur er for tiden den raskest voksende matproduksjonssektoren globalt, men på grunn av utilstrekkelig avfallshåndtering i produksjonssystemene, har den en betydelig miljøpåvirkning. For å sikre at industrien kan vokse på en bærekraftig måte, er det avgjørende å dempe disse miljøeffektene, samtidig som det skapes en sirkulær økonomi.

SEA-CYCLE-prosjektet har som mål å utnytte avfall og avløpsvann fra havbruksnæringen ved å innføre sirkulærøkonomiske prinsipper i håndteringen av havbruksavfall som en del av produksjonsprosessen.

Hovedmålet med SEA-CYCLE er å utvikle kunnskap som vil bidra til flere bærekraftige tilnærminger i produksjonsprosesser og samtidig minimere forurensning i havmiljøet. Prosjektet foreslår teknologier for å bidra til de sirkulære tilnærmingene i akvakultursektoren, samtidig som miljøforurensningen reduseres via bærekraftig avløpsvannbehandling og ressursgjenvinningsteknikker. I tillegg vil SEA-CYCLE evaluere den økonomiske levedyktigheten til disse teknologiene fra et samfunnsmessig ståsted, med tanke på både miljøkostnadene og fordelene involvert.

Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing food production sector globally, but it also has the potential to leave a significant environmental impact due to inadequate waste management practices within its production systems. To ensure a sustainable expansion of this industry, it is crucial to make efforts to minimize or mitigate these environmental effects, while creating circular economy. The SEA-CYCLE project aims to utilize waste and wastewater from the aquaculture industry by implementing circular economy principles in the management of aquaculture waste as part of the production processes.

The project proposes creating value chain for aquaculture waste resulting from aquaculture production. The project will i) investigate the valorization options of aquaculture sludge through anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis, ii) assess the ability of biochar produced from aquaculture sludge for N and P recovery and heavy metal removal from aquaculture wastewater, iii) assess the potential of aquaculture wastewater enriched biochar as biobased fertilizer. The environmental and economic impacts of the proposed technologies in the project will be assessed by life cycle analysis (LCA) and social cost-benefit analysis. 

In this project, we have assembled a strong interdisciplinary team of scientists with complementary expertise in the valorization of aquaculture waste including anaerobic digestion, production and utilization of biochar for environmental applications, LCA and cost-benefit analysis. The project primarily supports the achievement of the SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 14 by proposing technologies to contribute to the circular approaches in the aquaculture sector while reducing the environmental pollution via sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery techniques.

Sustainable aquaculture industry waste valorization through recycling

Global oppvarming fører til store endringer i Antarktis; isbreene, is bremmene og havisen smelter; det påvirker havstrømmer og dynamikk i Sørishavet som igjen påvirker de marine økosystemene og deres evne til å absorbere den økte atmosfærisk CO2 som er et resultat av menneskelig aktivitet. Sørishavet er har rike økosystemer hvor planteplankton og isalger effektivt lagrer CO2 gjennom fotosyntese. De nåværende og fremtidige endringene i den fysiske dynamikken i Sørishavet vil spille en stor rolle for fremtiden til marine økosystemer her og dermed evnen til å absorbere CO2.

Dette prosjektet har som mål å etablere et observatorium for biologisk mangfold og økosystemendring for det østlige Weddellhavet / Kong Haakon VII-havet. I denne regionen har det vært begrensede effekter av klimaendringer, men det er nå økende bevis økte miljøforvandling med betydelig innvirkning på biologisk mangfold og funksjonen til økosystemene. Det er begrenset data om økosystemet i dette området. Ved å etablere systematisk overvåkning av økosystemet, vil dagens status for økosystemet og det biologiste mangfoldet sammenlignes med antatte framtidige endringer. Dette vil bidra til å oppnå internasjonale mål for bevaring av marint biologisk mangfold og demping av klimaendringer.

This Biodiversa+ project aims to lay the foundation of a transnational Weddell Sea Observatory of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Change (WOBEC) for the Eastern Weddell Sea / King Haakon VII Sea (EWS) in the Southern Ocean. The Weddell Sea plays a key role for global ecosystem services, such as climate regulation and food provision, and hosts many species with conservation status. Acknowledging this unique ecological value, the EU and other members of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) are working towards a Marine Protected Area in the Weddell Sea (WSMPA). In the EWS, there is increasing evidence of a transition from a period of relatively muted climate change into an era of environmental transformation with significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Until present, however, the ecosystem of the EWS has remained notoriously under-studied. By laying the foundations of systematic ecosystem monitoring in the EWS, WOBEC will provide a baseline of the present state of biodiversity and ecosystems against which change can be measured and contribute to a number of transnational goals in marine biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and the post-global biodiversity framework.

Weddell Sea Observatory of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Change

BioBoost+-prosjektet vil fremme kostnadseffektiv høyfrekvent prøvetaking og identifikasjon av marine planter og dyr ved å bruke Artificial Intelligence (AI)-teknologi på fotografier og video. Disse metodene vil bli brukt på habitater (sjøgressenger, skalldyrsenger og makroalgekroner), indikatorarter av økologisk og økonomisk betydning (f.eks. fisk, hummer, strandfugl), invasive arter og plankton (grunnlaget for næringsnettet). Ved Nord universitet vil fokus være på automatisering av analyser av dyreplanktonprøver samlet inn årlig i over 40 år, og nyere etablert overvåking av havbunnsfauna og fisk på livestream undersjøisk video i Saltfjord.

Disse dataene er nødvendige for å gi rettidig informasjon om helsen til økosystemene og endringer i biologisk mangfold i sammenheng med fiskeri, klimaendringer og invasive arter. Dette prosjektet i europeisk målestokk involverer åtte organisasjoner og har studiesteder i Middelhavet, Nord- og Norskehavet, inkludert steder med aktiv habitatrestaurering og marine verneområder. BioBoost+ is designed to improve non-invasive, cost-effective, and high-frequency sampling and identification of marine plants and animals by applying state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology with digital imagery including real-time monitoring via camera networks and involvement of citizen science groups. These methods are applied to a wide range of taxa, from habitat-forming species (seagrass meadows, shellfish beds, and macroalgal canopies), indicator species of ecological and economic importance (e.g., coastal fish, lobsters, shorebirds), invasive species, and understudied groups (from microscopic, free-floating animals to rare fish). BioBoost+ enhances biodiversity monitoring within European regional seas from the Mediterranean, North and Norwegian Seas to support ongoing conservation interventions such as active habitat restoration projects and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Improved biodiversity monitoring will allow a better understanding of large-scale phenomena, such as thresholds, regime shifts and species invasions in vulnerable ecosystems, improve the capacity to predict the impacts of multiple stressors, and to develop better indicators of marine ecosystem health.

Prosjektets vitenskapelige formål er endret siden bevilgningen ble gitt. Formålene er nå å studere hvordan barns risiko for autismespekterforstyrrelser (ASD) påvirkes av følgende eksponeringsfaktorer: 

(1) Mors jodstatus i svangerskapet.
Jod er viktig for hjernens utvikling, spesielt i fosterlivet. I første halvdel av svangerskapet er embryoet/fosteret avhengig av tyroidhormoner fra mor, mens det i andre halvdel av svangerskapet produserer disse selv tyroksin så lenge tilgangen på jod er tilstrekkelig. Et adekvat jodnivå hos mor sikres kun via kostholdet, og gode kilder er meieriprodukter og sjømat. Alvorlig jodmangel i graviditeten er kjent for å gi alvorlige avvik hos barnet, som kretinisme og mental retardasjon. Mild til moderat jodmangel i svangerskapet er assosiert med lavere skår på verbal IQ, nedsatt leseforståelse og lesepresisjon, alvorlig forsinket språkutvikling, atferdsproblemer og redusert finmotorikk ved tre års alder, og med høyere ADHD-symptomskår ved åtte års alder. Dette er også typiske trekk hos barn med ASD. De siste fem årene har det kommet studier som viser at prevalensen av mild til moderat jodmangel er høy blant gravide norske kvinner: mellom 40 og 80% har et jodinntak under nedre anbefalte nivå. Jodmangel gir økt risiko for lavt tyroksinnivå, og lavt tyroksinnivå hos mor i første halvdel av svangerskapet er satt i sammenheng med økt risiko for ASD. Ingen har så langt studert jodinntak i første halvdel av graviditeten og risiko for ASD hos barn.

(2) Mors vitamin D-status i svangerskapet.
Hypotesen om en sammenheng mellom vitamin D og ASD kom i 2008 da en rapport fra Stockholm beskrev høy prevalens av ASD hos barn med somalisk bakgrunn. Samtidig ble en lignende hypotesen fremsatt basert på funn fra dyreforsøk og den økende forekomsten av D-vitaminmangel i befolkningen. Økningen i D-vitaminmangel er et resultat av økt bevissthet rundt soleksponering og risiko for malignt melanom. Det har siden kommet en rekke artikler som sannsynliggjør en sammenheng mellom lavt D-vitaminnivå i svangerskapet med utviklingsforstyrrelser som ASD og schizofreni. En rekke artikler har også vist at D-vitaminnivå hos barn med ASD er signifikant lavere enn hos normalutviklede barn, samt at det er funnet lavere D-vitaminnivå ved fødsel hos barn med ASD enn hos normalutviklede søsken. En studie har vist at lavt D-vitaminnivå midt i svangerskapet er assosiert med økt risiko for ASD hos barnet. Denne studien var liten (68 tilfeller av ASD), men hadde fordelen av tilgang på målte verdier for vitamin D fra blodprøver i svangerskapet. I Mor og barn-undersøkelsen er D-vitamin målt hos et underutvalg av mødre. Disse resultatene kan brukes til å predikere D-vitaminstatus hos resten av mødrene. Med over 800 identifiserte ASD-tilfeller kan MoBa gi et viktig bidrag til å studere sammenhengen mellom vitamin D i svangerskapet og ASD-risiko hos barnet.

The project will utilize data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study and the Autism Birth Cohort study to investigate the associations between (1) maternal iodine status during pregnancy and children's risk of autism spectrum disorder and (2) maternal vitamin D status during pregnancy and children's risk of autism spectrum disorder.

INFECTION, FEVER, IMMUNE SIGNATURES AND ANTIBODY PROFILES IN MOTHER-CHILD PAIRS WITH AND WITHOUT AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.

This is a tribute to the exceptional contributions of the Nordic Countries to psychiatry and in particular psychiatric genetics over the last decades. From early twin studies to studies in genetic isolates, research based on population registries or birth  cohorts, sophisticated biobanking initiatives, and comprehensive next generation sequencing studies, the Nordic countries have been at the forefront of modern complex genetic research for many years. The particular achievements in neuropsychiatric resear ch have fostered a host of long-term international collaborations such as with the multinational Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. 

This meeting features prominent researchers from all 5 Nordic countries presenting on the current state of the art of each  country's research activities in the field of biobanking and health registry research. They will discuss challenges and opportunities with leading experts from Europe, America, and Asia. A major focus of this symposium will lie on the development of strat egies to best exploit the available resources within the context of national and international funding activities. Specifically, presenters and the audience are expected to discuss opportunities of the upcoming HORIZON 2020 framework that will put resourc es such as the registries and the biobanks of the Nordic countries in the spotlight of future neuropsychiatric research.

The meeting will be coordinated with the XXII World Congress of Psychiatric Genetics (WCPG) 2014 which takes place in Copenhagen from  October 12 - 16, 2014. This is the first time the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics, which attracts up to 1000 participants each year, will hold its annual meeting in Scandinavia. Leading psychiatric geneticists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland , Norway, and Sweden take a leading role in organizing this important event. 

We will use this opportunity to increase the research in this field in Norway - and facilitate EU grant proposal.

Neuropsychiatric genetics meeting - facilitate international research collaboration in Norway

Lifebrain aims to establish a solid foundation of knowledge for understanding how brain health and cognitive function can be optimized in response to the enormous societal challenges with the ageing of the European population. Our main objective is to ide ntify and validate trends and determinants of cognitive decline by creating a large database of detailed information about health, cognitive function, genetics and brain imaging. This is central to understanding health, ageing and disease, as called for i n Horizon 2020 and PHC1-2014. We will achieve our objective by integration and standardization of four major longitudinal European studies ? Betula (Sweden), Whitehall II (UK), the Berlin Aging Study (Germany) and Cognition and plasticity through the life span (Norway) ? yielding a total number of participants approaching 10.000. By linking this information to additional national databases and biobanks, including birth registries, national and city archives and conscription data, we will be able to address  life-long risk and protective factors, mediators and moderators, of brain health and cognitive ageing throughout the life span. Brain imaging measures are central to all studies. We will study both cross-sectional differences and longitudinal changes, to  identify and validate pathways through which these risk and protective factors work in affecting cognitive function. The final part of the study will be to test pathways and mechanisms for brain health and cognitive changes experimentally in specific sub -samples. This approach of pooling large and unique datasets from different countries will increase the validity and generalizability of the findings, and lay a foundation for earlier diagnosis of brain disorders and cognitive decline, as well as future p reventive and therapeutic strategies. This project cannot be realized without close collaborations involving both small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and several of Europe?s major brain research centres.

Healthy brain and cognition from 0-100 years: Prognosis, preservation and plasticity

Everywhere in Europe suicide represents an epidemiological and a socio-economic burden. A number of projects, including European projects, have investigated suicide and related-disorders prevention and provided guidelines for strategies on suicide prevent ion including e-health programmes and awareness raising strategies. However, mHealth interventions for suicide prevention in the general population are not yet available at the European level. The overall objective of this project is to build and assess e ffectiveness, economic benefits and economic impact of an innovative and unprecedented mHealth based intervention for suicide prevention that include a mHealth application promoted by cities involving or not general practitioners (GPs) . This intervention  will aim at helping self-recognition of suicidal risk and associated depressive state in the general population as well as informing users regarding the places where they can seek help in their local area. It will be based on best practices and will be i mplemented in real life settings in X European countries. It will encompass both primary and secondary prevention. Research outcomes from the SPRING project will support stakeholders in making sound policy decisions on the provision of suicide prevention  programme and in making better use of limited financial and manpower resources.

Suicide Prevention mHealth-based Intervention in General Population

The main ambition of this proposal is to reduce the burden of mental health problems of young children and adolescents in Europe. This is important for the children themselves and for their families, but also for the societies they belong too, in view of  all COSTs involved and loss of productive working lives. The identification of risk factors, trends and determinants of developmental trajectories in mental health problems, forms the core objective. 

Many mental health problems of adults, already emerge  during childhood. Studies starting to follow developmental trajectories from pregnancy to infancy, early and middle childhood into adolescence and young adulthood, are definitely needed. The data of existing cohorts will be used, through a combination of  seven longitudinal studies on in total 22,000 children and their families living in five European countries, Norway, Spain, Cyprus, Belgium and The Netherlands. Data were collected on temperament, personality, behaviour problems, cognitive functioning, f amily and socio-economic background,as well as on pre- and peri-natal risk factors. Some studies also included data on genetic make-up, neuro-imaging, neuro-physiology,eye-tracking studies, mother-child interaction, attachment, parental personality and ne uro-psychological or developmental tests. The developmental periods covered, vary from pregnancy, infancy, early and middle childhood, to adolescence. New data will be collected in attunement between the studies. 

All of in total six work packages build  upon the first, containing results of the combination of the different datasets. Four work packages focus upon the developmental trajectories of mental health problems, with the inclusion of different potential mechanisms that might explain the onset, cou rse, and outcomes of mental health problems. Another work package focusses on the design of screening instruments that include the characteristics found to differentiate the trajectories of mental health problems.

Developmental trajectories of mental health problems in young European children

Fra tidligere forskning vet vi at internasjonalt adopterte barn og ungdom har større risiko for å utvikle psykiske problemer sammenlignet med jevnaldrende som ikke er adopterte. Likevel har flertallet av adopterte god psykisk helse på tross av en vanskelig start på livet. Det har blitt foreslått at dette kanskje kan forklares av resiliens, dvs. evnen til å håndtere stress og negative livshendelser, hos adopterte, men ingen studier har til nå undersøkt resiliensfaktorer blant adopterte og sammenhengen mellom resiliens og psykisk helse. Prosjektets mål er å undersøke psykisk helse og resiliens blant internasjonalt adopterte sammenliknet med ikke-adopterte jevnaldrende, og å beskrive utvikling i psykisk helse over tid. Prosjektet vil gjennomføres ved å koble det Norske Adopsjonsregisteret til befolkningsundersøkelsene ung@hordaland og Helseundersøkelsen Nord-Trøndelag (HUNT3). Ved å bruke det Norske Adopsjonsregisteret vil vi med stor sikkerhet identifisere de adopterte som har deltatt i undersøkelsene, noe som tradisjonelt har vært vanskelig i adopsjonsforskning. Første artikkel fra prosjektet omhandler psykiske helsevansker og resiliens hos internasjonalt adoptert ungdom og ble publisert i Journal of Adolescence i juli 2015. Resultatene er basert på ung@hordaland-undersøkelsen, som er fjerde runde av Barn i Bergen studien. Vi fant at internasjonalt adopterte ungdom rapporterte flere symptom på depresjon, ADHD, OCD og perfeksjonisme sammenliknet med ikke-adopterte jevnaldrende. Det var derimot ingen forskjeller i beskyttende faktorer (resiliens); adoptert og ikke-adoptert ungdom skåret like høyt på personlig kompetanse, sosial kompetanse, sosial støtte, samhold i familien og personlig struktur. Ungdom med høyere resiliensskårer rapporterte færre symptomer på psykiske helsevansker, men det var ingen interaksjonseffekter mellom adopsjonsstatus og total resiliensskåre på psykiske helsevansker. Dette, og senere funn fra prosjektet, kan bidra til bedre tilrettelegging av hjelpetjenestene som tilbys adopterte og deres foreldre, og kan også danne grunnlag for forebyggende intervensjoner rettet mot adopterte barn, unge og voksne. Andre artikkel fra prosjektet fokuserer på bruken av alkohol og ulovlig rusmidler blant samme utvalg av adoptert ungdom. Denne artikkelen ble publisert i American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, og fant at internasjonalt adoptert ungdom rapporterer mer problematisk alkohol og rusbruk, selv om det ikke var forskjeller i bruksmønster. Forskjellene i problematisk alkohol og rusbruk var i stor grad knyttet til symptomer på psykiske vansker. Tredje artikkel i prosjektet er en meta-analyse av publiserte studier på mental helse hos internasjonalt adopterte ungdommer. Artikkelen ble publisert i JAACAP, og viste at selv om de fleste adopterte fungerer fint, har de som gruppe større psykiske vansker, spesielt eksternaliserende vansker, sammenlignet med sine jevnaldrende. Disse tre artiklene inngikk i Kristin Gärtner Askelnad sin doktorgradsavhandling, som ble forsvart i januar 2017. Den siste artikkelen ble innsendt til publisering i slutten av januar 2017, og benytter HUNT3-data koblet med adopsjonsregisteret. Denne artikkelen fokuserer på nasjonalt adopterte voksne, og undersøker nivå av både fysisk og psykiske helse sammenlignet med både stebarnsadopterte og ikke-adopterte.

Adoption can be viewed as an intervention for children with a difficult start in life, with a goal of improving their potential for positive development. Prior studies report major improvements in children's early development following adoption, however,  adoptees are considered to be at risk for developing mental disorders. They also show poorer school performances than their non-adopted peers, though their cognitive competence is similar. We suggest that mental health problems can be one of the factors u nderlying these differences. There is little information available on mental distress among adoptees, and the possible relationships between mental distress, resilience and educational outcomes.  The aim of this project is to examine these relationships,  and how they develop over time. 
This project has the advantage of identifying adoptees by utilizing the Norwegian Central Adoption Registry, ensuring that adoptees are correctly identified, which has traditionally been a challenge in adoption research. T he adoption registry will be linked to several large population-based health surveys. Four of the papers will be based on data from the longitudinal Bergen Child Study (BCS). The first waves of BCS include about 7000 participants, while the fourth wave (a lso called ung@hordaland) include 10 200 participants. Data from BCS will also be linked to official data on school absence and grade point averages provided by Hordaland County. Two papers will be based on data from the two most recent waves of the Nord- Trøndelag Health Studies, including about 74 000 participants in HUNT2 and 48 289 in HUNT3.
Findings from this project could help improve educational and health related services given to adoptees and adoptive parents, and form the basis for preventive int erventions aimed at helping adopted children. In addition, it can shed light on some of the factors that promote positive development in adopted children through the study of resilience.

Mental health outcomes in adopted children - a longitudinal register-based study

Hovedmålsettingen  med denne studien var å kartlegge psykiske og kroppslige plager hos rammede av terrorangrepet 22.7 og og deres foreldre. En bedre forståelse av hvordan psykologiske og somatiske reaksjoner og plager kan utvikles over tid, samt hvilke forhold som bidrar til å forverre eller mestre plagene er av stor betydning for utforming av effektive hjelpetiltak og råd til rammede. Undersøkelsen omfatter datainnsamling på tre tidspunkt; 4-5 måneder, 14-15 måneder og 30-32 måneder etter katastrofen. Alle ungdommer og voksne (over 12 år) som var på Utøya ble invitert til å delta. I den første runden deltok 325 overlevende (gjennomsnittsalder var 19 år) og 463 foreldre. I den andre runden deltok 285 overlevende og 435 omsorgspersoner, mens 261 overlevende, og 377 omsorgspersoner deltok i tredje runde. Deltakelse var frivillig og informantene kunne når som helst trekke seg.  Trenet personell (de fleste var leger, psykologer og psykiatriske sykepleiere) gjennomførte strukturerte intervju med de overlevende, inkludert et validert hodepineintervju. Ved slutten av hvert intervju vurderte intervjueren de overlevendes behov for helsetjenester, og ga hjelp til å kontakte de aktuelle ressursene hvis nødvendig. Alle deltagerne i studien fikk tilsendt en kort rapport med noen utvalgte resultater etter hver datainnsamling og før resultater ble gjort kjent i pressen eller i vitenskapelige publikasjoner.
Vi spurte alle informanter om samtykke til å samle inn data fra ulike fra kriseteam, sykehus og praktiserende lege, samt om tilgang til ulike offentlige registre.
Resultater
Studien har vist at de som var direkte berørt av terrorangrepet på Utøya hadde betydelige psykiske og fysiske reaksjoner på hendelsen og de utfordringene de møtte i etterkant. Ved det første intervjuet rapporterte nesten halvparten av de som hadde vært på Utøya sannsynlig posttraumatisk stressforstyrrelse (PTSD), dvs symptomer på klinisk nivå (antas å ha betydning for funksjon i hverdagen). Majoriteten (7 av 10) rapporterte også betydelige nivå av angst, depresjon eller somatiske plager. På både det andre og tredje intervjuettidspunkt ble symptombelastningen noe redusert, selv om det fortsatt var langt høyere enn det som forventes i  i befolkningen generelt.
Ungdommens og foreldrenes mentale og fysiske reaksjoner ga en betydelig økning i behovet for hjelp, over flere år, både fra kommunal- og spesialisthelsetjenesten.
Deres egne fortellinger om opplevelsen
Vi ønsket å få mer kunnskap om ungdommenes opplevelser og posttraumatisk stress. Dette kan bidra til å identifisere ungdom som har fortellinger som kan gjøre dem mer utsatt for posttraumatiske stressreaksjoner etter skremmende hendelser. Postdoktor i prosjektet (1,5 år), Petra Filkukova, har analysert fortellingene og funnet ut at det var sammenheng mellom hvordan ungdommene forteller om hendelsen og psykisk helse 14 til 15 måneder etter terrorangrepet på Utøya. Fortellingene til ungdom med få posttraumatiske stressreaksjoner hadde et mer internt fokus med flere beskrivelser om tanker og følelser enn fortellingene til de med høyt symptomnivå. Filkukova fant også at mange overlevende hadde opplevd langvarig frykt lenge etter at de var reddet fra Utøya. Ungdommen som opplevde slike "forlenget frykt" hadde også betydelig høyere nivå av posttraumatiske stressreaksjoner.
Rammede av traumatiske hendelser rapporterer om ulike smerter etter hendelser, men det finnes overraskende lite systematisk kunnskap. I denne studien har vi undersøkt forekomst og etiologi blant unge overlevende som var utsatt for terrorangrepet.  Postdoktor Synne Øien Stensland har gjort to studier om tematikken; den første har anslått risikoen for hodepine etter terror i en sammenliknet kohortstudie. Vi fant at flertallet av overlevende rapporterte migrene eller spenningstypen hodepine i etterkant av terrorangrepet; unge overlevende hadde tre ganger høyere sannsynlighet for å oppleve alvorlig og hyppig hodepine sammenlignet med kontroller. Tidsskriftartikkelen som beskriver denne studien er for til trykking i det anerkjente (nivå 2) tidsskriftet Neurology, og kunnskapen vil dermed spres til fagmiljøer i nevrologi og andre medisinske spesialiteter og bidra til å øke kunnskapen og bedre behandlingen av denne tilstanden hos rammede. Den andre studien er i sluttfasen og klargjøres for innsending ila sommeren 2018. I dette arbeidet analyses det longitudinelle forløpet av psykiske og somatiske helseplager over tid (tre tidspunkt). Målsetningen er å undersøke om tidlig smerte og andre somatiske plager som går langt utover den akutte kan prediktere senere funksjonsnedsettelse og hvordan disse plagene relaterer seg til psykiske symptomer over tid.  Studien benytter avanserte statistiske analyser og denne typen kunnskap er svært etterspurt i fagfeltet. Resultatene kan få stor betydning for oppbygging av type hjelpetiltak som anbefales etter katastrofer.

Background
Societal response to terrorist attacks include care and support for the victims. Previous research has clearly demonstrated that victims of terrorism may carry a burden of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and somatic health problems f or years following a terrorist attack. However, predictors of long-term courses and the temporal development of symptoms are largely unknown.
   
Objective
The current study aims to  identify predictors of long-term health development in adolescents and y oung adults following exposure to a terrorist attack. More specifically we will a) analyze aspects of trauma narratives and identify their relationship with long-term development of posttraumatic stress symptoms, b) examine the developmental trajectories  of ill-health and resilience, and their predictors, and c) investigate comorbidity and the temporal development of mental health, somatic health problems and social support.
 
Methods
A unique opportunity for investigation of longitudinal health trajector ies following a terrorist attack is offered by our study of survivors and their parents following the 22. July terrorist attack at the Utøya Island in Norway. This interview study includes repeated measurements of several health outcomes, as well as narra tives bringing forward the survivors' own voices. We will use a mixed methods approach, mixed effects models, and structural equation modeling.

Scientific importance
This study will address scientific gaps in our understanding of long-term health develop ment following terrorism and disasters. This empirical investigation will guide theory development related to the longitudinal interplay of mental and somatic symptoms, social support and narratives. Identification of pathways of ill-health and factors re lated to resiliency will contribute to develop more evidence informed response programs to disasters and terror, including early outreach and treatment.
