LABCare er et forskningsprosjekt som skal bidra med kunnskap om hvordan kompetansen til helsefagarbeidere som jobber i eldreomsorgen kan styrkes gjennom gode læringsmiljø i og mellom utdanninger og kommuner. Helsefagarbeidere er en yrkesgruppe som utgjør nøkkelpersonell i omsorgen for eldre, men som i utgangspunktet har lav formell utdanning. Det er stort behov for kunnskap om betingelser for læring og kompetansebygging innen eldreomsorgen, spesielt blant denne yrkesgruppen. LABCare omhandler læringsmiljø, yrkesfaglig utdanning og omsorgsarbeid og har fokus på læringsmiljø i og på tvers av yrkesfaglige utdanninger og arbeidsplasser innen eldreomsorgen. Den består av dokumentstudier, feltarbeid og intervju i seks større bykommuner og mindre distriktskommuner på tvers av tre regioner i Norge og Danmark. En dokumentstudie ser nærmere på politiske styrende tekster og tidligere forskning på feltet. Forskningsprosjektet rommer også omfattende feltarbeid og intervju for å beskrive utdanningsinstitusjoner, kommuner, arbeidsgivere, elever, studenter, lærere og veilederes erfaringer. De ulike studiene vil sammen gi viktig kunnskap om betingelser for læring og læringsmiljø. Dette kunnskapsgrunnlaget vil kunne brukes i videre utviklingsarbeid, både strategisk, organisatorisk og praktisk, med mål om å sikre en kompetent og kvalifisert arbeidsstyrke innenfor eldreomsorgen.

Worker recruitment, retainment, and upskilling are interwoven challenges in the elderly care field. Although these are priorities in both Norway and Denmark, the complex demands and treatment of healthcare students and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) is complicating the fulfillment of such goals. A richer account of learning environments, vocational education, and experiences of care work will be necessary to provide a competent and reliable workforce for the future. Responding to the urgent need to attract and retain qualified elderly care staff, a core objective of LABCare is to explore, using appropriately boundary-crossing frameworks, how conditions for learning may be enhanced through collaborative arrangements between vocational education and municipal employers. Built around the concept of Expansive Learning Environments this project proposes an interdisciplinary, comparative study that extends across demographic and national boundaries. A multi-case-study design, which uses several data sources and methods, is employed for cross-site comparison. The key sites of the study are the learning environments in and across vocational education and elderly care workplaces, and the research, involving document studies, fieldwork, and interviews, will be conducted in 6 municipalities across 3 regions: Nordland, Oslo, and 1 Danish region. By utilising the Expansive-Restrictive Framework from Fuller & Unwin (2004), LABCare will newly identify policy and organisational elements that shape student/LPN motivation and learning, investigate synergies between the personal engagement of students/LPNs and the development of elderly care education and organisations, and ultimately provide a novel analytical framework for evaluating the quality of learning environments pertaining to care work. The findings will be of critical relevance to several development initiatives – strategic, managerial, practical – that endeavour to secure a competent and qualified elderly care workforce.

Learning across boundaries in elderly care (LABCare): Enabling expansive learning in and across vocational education and workplace practices

Bygninger er uregjerlige, de er i konstant forandring og involverer utallige aktører i fortid og samtid. Bygninger består av materialer med forskjellig levetid, deres opprinnelige funksjon kan bli utdatert, og de kan ikke (og bør ikke) behandles på linje med kunstverk eller arkeologiske artefakter. Til forskjell fra i kunsten og arkeologien kan arkitektonisk proveniens forståes som et dynamisk og fremtidsvendt fenomen, og anvendes som et redskap til å forstå bygningers tapte, aktuelle og fremtidige muligheter økonomisk, sosialt og materielt. Dette forskningsprosjektet overfører proveniens til arkitekturfeltet på tre radikale måter: Det tar begrepet opp i skala, det anvendes til å forstå objekter som normalt ikke flytter på seg, og det gir begrepet en ny temporal innretning ved å tenke proveniens som et instrument for endring snarere enn som en retrospektiv dokumentasjon og autorisasjon. En viktig dimensjon er å forstå historiske bygninger og bygningselementer som del av globale nettverk med vekt på materialenes opphavssted og tilvirkning, deres produksjonssteder, transport-ruter og miljøene som satte dem sammen og tok dem i bruk. 

Proveniens kaster nytt lys på arkitektur som en vev av kulturelle, materielle, sosiale, teknologiske og geopolitiske praksiser. Med dette begrepet vil vårt tverrfaglige forskningsprosjekt undersøke transformasjon med vekt på materialsammensetning,  eiendomsforhold og historisk rekonseptualisering. Prosjektet er arkivbasert, men vi forstår også bygninger som levende arkiver, som depoter av materiell historie og levd liv, og som en kilde til å forstå opphavet, arbeidet, bruken, emosjonene og de offentlige debattene som utgjør bygningers proveniens. Arkitektonisk proveniens gir oss mulighet til å revurdere kulturelle og estetiske kjernebegreper som opprinnelse, forfatterskap, eierskap, legitimitet, autentisitet, patina, kollektivt minne, drama og kriser, bruk, misbruk og fornyelse.

The need to reuse and renew the existing building stock poses new challenges to the operations of an unsustainable building industry and an unprepared architectural profession. Situated in the distinctly multidisciplinary field of architecture, and involving leading experts from anthropology, art history, art, and digital humanities, our ambition is to theorize and demonstrate a new operative field through comprehensive studies of specific buildings and building materials.
With the architectural object placed center stage, an overall objective is to transpose debates on provenance into architecture based on the hypothesis that the concept is ripe to be rethought on a different scale, and that it can become instrumental in changing our attitude towards the obsolescence of buildings. Differently from art and archaeology, architectural provenance reaches beyond historical ownership records, and may be discussed as a dynamic process and as a creative instrument, applicable to understanding lost, present and future potentials of historical buildings that also involves the social trajectory of architectural works. A central hypothesis is that provenance may be understood as a cyclic and multi-trajectorial phenomenon rather than as a linear, retrospective documentation. This conceptual relocation will allow us to focus on materials and components rather than the completed work, and to establish useful tools for recycling the meaning and function of existing buildings. 
The complex relationship between thinking and doing that characterizes architectural practice defines the scope of the project. Provenance Projected will contribute new theoretical insight as to how material culture is distributed, appropriated, altered, reinvented and evaluated according to various ideals and ethics. We insist that changing the state of things is dependent on new knowledge, new concepts, new vocabularies, new perspectives, and importantly, authoritative examples.

Provenance Projected: Architecture Past and Future in the Era of Circularity

Promising Practices will develop new knowledge about holistic work inclusion practices for young adults. It aims to identify practices that mitigate the complex social problem of long-term work exclusion. We do this in genuine partnership with youth teams in local offices of the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Services (NAV). They will contribute with data production and interpretation of findings through a series of workshops. Moreover, they will play a key role in the dissemination of findings. The project adopts a mixed methods approach, combining register data, a factorial survey, ethnographic observation and qualitative interviews. Central to the project is a holistic perspective on work inclusion, recognising that work inclusion trajectories are rarely linear, that the labour and welfare system is fragmented and that it demands both inter-personal and labour market expertise that frontline workers often lack. Although work inclusion research increasingly identifies such challenges, research translating such insights into a comprehensive and systematic approach to practice is lacking. Promising Practices addresses this gap by identifying factors that promote or hinder holistic practices and by developing clear recommendations based on research created and conducted in collaboration with NAV. Expected outcomes from the project include: 
•	Nuanced and up-to-date description of typical work inclusion trajectories of young adults 
•	Understanding of frontline workers’ allocation of work inclusion measures to different groups of young adults
•	New knowledge of how day-to-day work inclusion practice is carried out in NAVs youth teams
•	Novel insights into service users’ experience of the work inclusion in NAV
•	Clear recommendations for future practice built on project findings generated in collaboration with youth teams in NAV
The project is interdisciplinary, involving researchers with backgrounds in social work, social policy, sociology, psychology and economics.

Promising Practices: Holistic Work Inclusion of Young Adults

Hva skjer med teknologisk kunnskap og praksis i tider med turbulens, sosialt stress og høy mobilitet? Gir stress og mobilitet håndverksmiljøer store utfordringer, eller kan det gi næring til kreativitet? ARCREATE drevet av et dypt ubehag over arkeologiens etablerte fortellinger om migrasjon, da særlig for ekspansjonen av Bantu-talende grupper fra det sentrale til det sørlige Afrika fra og med det første årtusen e.Kr. Disse etablerte tolkningene utelukker for en stor del nettopp de håndverkerne som laget materialet arkeologer er avhengige av for å konstruere historie. Dermed har en også oversett de vidt forskjellige kultur- og naturmiljøene som håndverkerne levde og virket i.

ARCREATEs hovedmål er å lage en syntese av to regioner i Afrika: Det sentrale Afrika gjennom tusen år (500-1500 e.Kr.) og det sørlige Afrika i et hundreårsperspektiv (1700-1830 e.Kr.). Migrasjon har ført til at regionene har dype historiske forbindelser, på tross av stor geografisk avstand. ARCREATE-teamet søker svar gjennom et nytt langtidsperpektiv på utvikling av teknologi og samfunn. Prosjektet kombinerer arkeologiske, arkeometallurgiske, historiske og lingvistiske data for å øke forståelsen av hvordan håndverkere utvant og brukte mineraler. For å få til dette har teamet utviklet en ny metodologi for tverrvitenskapelig feltarbeid som gjør det mulig for ARCREATE å identifisere og tolke håndverkeres kunnskap i kontekster preget av turbulens og høy mobilitet.

ARCREATE vektlegger likeverdig samarbeid med lokale interessenter og samarbeidspartnere. Prosjektet utfordrer forutinntatte moderne oppfatninger av mobilitet, kreativitet og overføring av kunnskap i afrikanske samfunn. ARCREATE setter søkelyset på håndverkernettverk dominert av kvinner og vil arbeide fram et nytt nedenfra-perspektiv. Dette vil utgjøre en viktig motvekt til mer tradisjonelle ovenfra-perspektiv som primært har søkt å spore (mannlige) eliters bevegelser og interaksjon.

ARCREATE offers a novel approach to understanding technological and social change during turbulent times in central and southern Africa. Archaeology’s grand narratives about Bantu migrations, largely derived from studies of ceramics, ignore the creative knowledges of the artisans who made the ceramic objects that the archaeologists studied. ARCREATE will work closely with local stakeholders to excavate these technological and sensorial knowledges and the networks that transmitted them across space and time. Cognisant of recent re-thinking about mobility, creativity, learning and households, ARCREATE highlights local agency in its emic investigation of technological knowledge, seeking to understand the social, conceptual, ecological and mineralogical factors that guided craftspeople's choices of specific materials and techniques.

ARCREATE is ground-breaking in its integration of archaeological and linguistic data and in its research design, which connects micro-scale dynamics, such as gendered cross-craft interaction, and supra-regional processes. It combines comparative geochemical and statistical analysis with micro- and meso-scale studies of single households and communities in two case studies with different temporal trajectories – a millennium (in current-day Zambia, an under-researched part of central Africa) and a century (in what is now South Africa and Botswana). As such, ARCREATE is able both to explore the pace of change and to overcome the difficulty of developing archaeological, anthropological and linguistic datasets on commensurable scales. Reconstructing learning networks and sensory modalities through Africans’ own words and gestures, the project will offer new narratives of technological inventions and related social changes in a long durée synthesis.

ARCREATE. An Archaeology of Creative Knowledge in Turbulent Times

Internasjonal politkk er et gjennomført kjønnet felt. Dette gjenspeiles i nyheter og dagligliv og har blitt påvist gjennom en rekke feministiske analyser. Og dess mer «alvorlig» politikken er, dess sterkere er det maskuline preget. Nest etter militæret, er diplomatiet det feltet der maskulinitet har stått sterkest. Diplomatiets maskulinitet er allikevel noe av et paradoks. Den arketypiske kjønningen av sosialt liv fremstiller en motsetning mellom en mannlig kriger og en kvinnelig ikke-stridende. Diplomatiet har videre trekk som typisk assosieres med det feminine, som samtale heller makt, lytte heller enn snakke og fingerspissforståelse av normene for sosial omgang. Ikke-voldelig omgang, lyttende nærvær og sosial kapital er sentrale for diplomatisk samhandling. Den sterke koblingen mellom maskulinitet og diplomati er enda mer paradoksal når vi tar med i betraktningen at det inntil slutten av 1700-tallet ikke fantes noe samlebegrep for «diplomati», mens kvinner var aktive og anerkjente deltagere i forhandlinger, kommunikasjon og representasjon. Disse funksjonene har senere blitt regnet som diplomatiets kjernefunksjoner. Mellom midten av 1700-tallet og midten av 1800-tallet ble kvinnene imidlertid skjøvet ut at offisielt diplomati. Diplomatiets fokus på fredlig konfliktløsning, lytting og sosial forståelse og kvinnenes historiske rolle i internasjonal samhandling reiser et åpenbart spørsmål - hvorfor og hvordan ble diplomati kjønnet maskulint og praktisert utelukkende av menn? Dette er kjernespørsmålet for REGEND. Dette spørsmålet er viktig for vår historiske forståelse av diplomati, men også for hvordan vi forstår den samtidige kjønningen av diplomati og hvordan kvinner har blitt re-integrert i diplomatiet. Ved å reise dette spørsmålet bringer prosjektet feministisk analyse til det historiske studiet av internasjonal politikk, samtidig som det historiserer feministiske studier av internasjonale politikk og diplomati.

International politics is thoroughly gendered, as demonstrated by feminist scholarship over the last three decades. And the “higher” the politics, the stronger the masculinization. Diplomacy is second only to the military in degree of masculinization. This masculinization of diplomacy is paradoxical, insofar as an archetypical gendering of societal relations posits a dichotomy between the male warrior and the female non-combatant. In fact, considering insights from gender studies, diplomacy appears closer to traits that have historically been associated with femininity. These include conversations over violence, listening rather than talking, and attention to norms of proper social interaction. Indeed, non-violent interactions, listening and social skills are at the core of diplomatic protocol. The strong association of diplomacy with men is even more paradoxical when we acknowledge that until the 18th century, not only was there no established collective term for “diplomacy”, but women were active and acknowledged participants in negotiations, communication and representation, practices later considered at the core of diplomacy. Between the middle of the 17th century and the middle of the 19th century, however, women were forced out of official diplomacy. Given diplomacy’s concern with peaceful interactions, listening and sociality, and given women’s historical importance in such international interactions, why and how did official diplomacy become masculinized and practiced only by men? This is the core question motivating REGEND. This question is important for our historical understanding of the institution of diplomacy, but it is also central for our understanding of the contemporary gendering and re-inclusion of women into diplomacy. In addressing this question, the project brings feminist scholarship in a systematic way to Historical International Relations, while also historicising feminist studies of international relations and diplomacy.

Re-gendering diplomacy

Kunstig intelligens brukes stadig mer på en rekke områder i samfunnet. Dette berører i økende grad også læring og undervisning i skolen. Fremtidens utdanning og arbeidsliv vil trolig være preget av at vi arbeider med programmer som tar i bruk kunstig intelligens (KI) på ulike måter.

Læring i algoritmenes tid (LAT) studerer læringsprosesser i dagens skole der elever bruker programmer med elementer av kunstig intelligens. Målet er å utvikle didaktiske modeller som kan bidra til at lærere kan legge til rette for læringsprosesser for å styrke elevenes forståelse og utbytte av slike programmer.

LAT-prosjektet skal oppnå målet gjennom tre ulike delprosjekter. Det vil gjennomføres studier i klasserommet, der lærere som medforskere kan utvikle kompetanse om KI med Asker kommunes modell - læringsløyper. Det skal gjøres en litteraturgjennomgang av tidligere nasjonal og internasjonal forskning om KI i skolen, og det skal kartlegges hvordan kommuner kan styre og lede utvikling av skolenes teknologibruk, hva gjelder organisering, etiske og juridiske forhold og elevens personvern.

Prosjekteier Asker kommune, med Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) som forskningspartner, har særlig ansvar for å synliggjøre arbeidet med elevenes personvern. Forskere fra UiO vil undersøke tidligere forskning om KI i skolen, og i samarbeid med kommunen undersøke elevens læring i klasserommet.

Innovasjonen skal gi nytte for kommunen og verdi for samfunnet. For å utarbeide didaktisk bruk av KI, bygger derfor LAT-prosjektet på forskning i klasserom, samt nasjonal og internasjonal forskning. Et viktig punkt er å videreutvikle de kritiske perspektivene på digitalisering generelt og bruk av KI spesielt. Denne didaktikken integreres i den etablerte strukturen for kompetanseutvikling av lærere i Asker kommune, og disse erfaringene vil formidles gjennom en nasjonal satsing. Dette er i tråd med hvordan “Strategi for digital kompetanse og infrastruktur for barnehage og skole” legger opp til Kompetanseutvikling.

Asker kommune er en av Norges største kommuner der de fleste elever har arbeidet med Google Workspace for Education med Chromebook siden 2017. Kunstig intelligens er innebygd i flere av disse programmene for å tilrettelegge søk, utvikle elevenes språk, sjangerforståelse, oversette og gi tilbakemelding på ord og setningsnivå. Dette gir didaktiske muligheter, men skaper også utfordringer. Det er derfor avgjørende å både opparbeide en didaktisk bruk og en kritisk tilnærming til bruken av kunstig intelligens, med særlig vekt på kunnskap, læring og elevens personvern. Gjennomtenkt didaktikk for programmer som bygger på kunstig intelligens kan skape nye former for læring, men slikt arbeid bør også skape refleksjon hos elever om hvordan kunstig intelligens påvirker utvikling av digital identitet, medborgerskap og dermed morgendagens demokrati.

Innovasjonsprosjektet Læring i algoritmens tidsalder (LAT) er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom Asker kommune og forskere ved UiO. Prosjektet skaper en forskningsbasert innovasjon som i første omgang tilbyr 12000 elever og 1200 lærere i Asker en didaktikk for bruk av elevenes programmer som bygger på kunstig intelligens. Kunnskap om dette er relevant på tvers av tjenesteområder og knyttes til Asker kommunes lokale planer med FNs bærekraftsmål.

Hovedmålet med LAT-prosjektet er å belyse muligheter som kunstig intelligens (KI) i grunnskolens programvare kan gi for lærerens undervisning og elevenes læring. Gjennom å syntetisere forskning, vurdere etiske og personvernrelaterte problemstillinger for bruk av KI og studere elevers læringsarbeid med programvare som bygger på KI. Dette gir LAT-prosjektet et solid forskningsmessig grunnlag for virksomhetens innovasjon, som til slutt skal spres nasjonalt.

LAT-prosjektets har en bredt sammensatt referansegruppe med representanter fra universiteter, kommune-Norge, IKT-Norge, samt forlagsbransjen for digitale læremidler. Slik sikrer LAT-prosjektet nasjonal spredning og verdiskaping for samfunnet.

Læring i algoritmenes tidsalder (LAT) – En innovasjon for didaktisk bruk av kunstig intelligens.

Vellykket integrering av flyktninger er en viktig oppgave. Mens det er en relativt stor litteratur om hvordan ulike arbeidsmarked- og utdanningstiltak virker, vet vi langt mindre om viktigheten av hvor flyktningene bosettes. Siden bosetningssted ved ankomst bestemmes av myndighetene og potensielt påvirker livsbanen til flyktninger og deres barn, har troverdig kunnskap fra en norsk kontekst direkte politikkrelevans. På et mer generelt plan, kan analyser av bosetning av flyktninger generere kunnskap om nabolagseffekter som også vil være politikkrelevant for eksempel for lokasjonen til kommunale boliger. 
Forskningsspørsmålene vi ønsker å besvare i dette prosjektet er viktige og politikkrelevante, og de empiriske og teoretiske kunnskapshullene er store. Prosjektet vil la oss besvare hvordan det aller første bosetningsstedet flyktningene får i Norge påvirker arbeidsmarkedsutfall, integrering, tillit, mental helse og holdninger til likestilling. Ved å studere et spekter av utfall, vil vi dekke dimensjoner av sosial integrering utover sysselsetting og lønn. Et presserende spørsmål vi vil studere, er hvorvidt økonomisk og sosial integrering går hånd i hånd, noe som ofte antas i den norske integreringspolitikken. 
Prosjektet fokuserer mest på kvoteflyktninger/overføringsflyktninger fra FNs høykommissær for flyktninger (UNHCR). Siden disse flyktningene får tildelt et nabolag for bosetting før ankomst til Norge, og ikke velger bosetningssted selv, vil plasseringen være mindre relatert til andre konfunderende faktorer for integrering og vi forventer at resultatene blir generelle nok til å gi viktige politikkimplikasjoner. Først av alt utgjør kvoteflyktninger størstedelen av flyktninger til Norge nå, ettersom antallet som søker asyl har falt drastisk de senere årene. For det andre kan resultatene generaliseres til andre flyktninger. For det tredje, vil noen av resultatene sannsynligvis kunne generaliseres til hele befolkningen.

The project outlines an ambitious and bold research agenda, addressing empirical challenges related to the study of refugee integration and neighborhood effects. The main objective is to identify causal effects of neighbourhoods on labor market outcomes, social integration, education, trust, mental health, and attitudes. Causal evidence is hard to establish since people typically self-select into areas of residence. Therefore, the project focuses mostly on UNHCR resettlement refugees (which we call quota refugees). As this group are placed in a neighborhood before arriving to Norway, placement is unrelated to potential confounders, something we have also confirmed in previous research.  

The project is innovative as we can combine the natural experiment of refugee placement to neighborhoods with both register data and a large survey data collection to credibly identify effects and mechanisms. The project will enable us to answer whether the initial placement of refugees affects a wide set of outcomes. By studying a range of outcomes, we cover dimensions of social integration beyond employment and earnings.

The project is policy relevant. How to successfully integrate refugees is an important task for governments, for which efficient policy solutions are in high demand. Since initial location is decided by policy, credible evidence from a Norwegian context has direct policy relevance. We also believe that our results are relevant for other groups and for neighborhood effects more generally.

The project is interdisciplinary and draws on theories from different fields of the social sciences. The ultimate goal is to push the research frontiers of political science and economics. The project team consists of top national and world leading international scholars from these disciplines and the project leader actively publishes well in both disciplines. We expect that the project will produce top publications.

Refugee Settlement Locations and Long Run Outcomes

Skandinavia og USA fremstilles ofte som kontraster, preget av ulik og adskilt historisk utvikling. Særlig synes Skandinavia å skille seg fra det amerikanske samfunn med etterkrigstidens utvikling mot en regulert kapitalisme og stor velferdsstat. De skandinaviske landenes sterke arbeiderbevegelser gis gjerne en stor del av æren. Kontrasteringen av USA og Skandinavia skygger imidlertid for den betydningsfulle kontakten og utvekslingen som fant sted mellom arbeiderbevegelsene på hver side av Nord-Atlanteren i tiårene etter andre verdenskrig. Faktisk kan fremveksten av de skandinaviske samfunnsmodellene ikke fullt ut forstås uten å ta med i betraktningen de kraftfulle impulsene som strømmet til Skandinavia fra USA i denne perioden. Og inspirasjonen var gjensidig.
Labor Entanglements across the Atlantic (LEA) belyser de viktige forbindelsene mellom de organiserte arbeiderbevegelsene i USA og Skandinavia fra avslutningen av andre verdenskrig til Ronald Reagans innsettelse som amerikansk president i 1981. LEA undersøker et transatlantisk nettverk av arbeiderledere som aktivt utvekslet ideer, kompetanse og kapital i sammenheng med den kalde krigen. Et særlig søkelys rettes mot arbeiderbevegelsens utforming av en særegen transatlantisk identitet og visjon – et Arbeidernes Vesten.
Fagforeningsarbeid var i de første tiårene av etterkrigstiden dominert av menn. Til tross for dette var kvinnelige arbeiderledere og aktivister innflytelsesrike aktører på den internasjonale arena. LEA fokuserer på kvinnelige arbeiderlederes påvirkning på kjønnspolitikk på arbeidsplasser og hjem på begge sider av Atlanteren. LEA vil undersøke en sammenvevd transatlantisk arbeiderhistorie preget av diplomati, samarbeid og gjensidig utveksling av samfunnsvisjoner og politiske løsninger mellom innflytelsesrike amerikanske og skandinaviske arbeiderledere. LEA fyller derved betydelige kunnskapshull og bidrar til den fruktbare og mangfoldige transnasjonale vendingen i internasjonal arbeiderhistorie.

Within modern Scandinavian political history, organized labor routinely plays a foundational role in establishing the political structures and values today described as a Scandinvian model. Nonetheless, large gaps remain in our knowledge about Scandinavian labor’s transnational history and influences during this period, in particular its connections with the United States, the dominant western superpower of the mid-twentieth century. This project aims to expand the boundaries of both US and Scandinavian labor history by investigating the networks that Scandinavian and American labor leaders forged from 1944 to 1981 and the way that this served to affect societies on either side of the Atlantic. By using a digital map to explore the nodes, edges, and structures of Scandinavian-American connections, this project demonstrates that labor actors, more than just concerned with domestic affairs, were crucial to transnational reciprocal exchanges that facilitated ideational transmission and helped establish common visions of the future. Engaging in hitherto ignored comparisons of Scandianvian labor movements' transnational contacts with the US labor movement, including examining the role of women as participants and founders of their own labor networks, we unravel the agency of unions and labor officials to push global social change within a Cold War system. The project draws upon a rich and largely untapped pool of material to expose a complex system of exchange, cooperation, and rivalry that led to both solidarity and misunderstandings, as labor networks transferred ideas and images in the context of diverse situations and audiences. Understanding the dynamism and fluidity of transatlantic networks presents the opportunity to re-examine narratives of the Cold War and high modernity while at the same time highlighting their centrality in the development of unique transnational visions of Labor’s West.

Labor Entanglements across the Atlantic: US-Scandinavian Activism, Networks and Visions for Society in the Twentieth Century

Vi trenger alle verktøyene vi har til rådighet i kampen for klimarettferdighet ettersom sivilsamfunn over hele verden, fra Norge til Brasil, tyr til domstoler og menneskerettighetsinstanser for å kreve klimahandling. De gjennomgripende effektene av miljøskader og klimaskader, og deres kompliserte årsakssammenheng, medfører store utfordringer i bevisføring, sammenliknet med det som er tilfelle for de fleste menneskerettighetsbrudd. Prosjektet CLIMATE RIGHTS (CR) vil undersøke bevis og bevisføringsmetoder i klimasaker gjennom et tverrfaglig program som kombinerer arkitektur, miljødesign, GIS, kunstnerisk forskning og internasjonal rettsvitenskap. For å utforske bevishull i klimasaker i og utenfor Norge bruker prosjektet skala som et avgrensende narrativt verktøy, for sømløst å bevege seg mellom medier, steder og perspektiver, i kombinasjon med metoder for involvering av deltakere fra sivilsamfunnet. Klimakrisen stiller oss overfor stadig større risiko og skaper et påtrengende behov for en utvidelse av forestillingsevnen. Spørsmål om ansvar, årsakssammenheng og verifisering – som er nøkkelen til å utvikle kunnskapen som trengs for Norges overgang til et nullutslippssamfunn – er i stor grad ubesvarte. CR’ primære mål vil være å utvikle bevisføringsmetoder som trengs for å kunne fremlegge tekniske bevis for miljøskader og klimaskader i og utenfor rettssalen. Prosjektet vil dokumentere hvordan bevis brukes i rettighetsbaserte klimasaker; bedre forstå og utvikle visualisering av klimaattribusjonsvitenskap; og gjennomføre en rekke høyprofilerte undersøkelser for å bistå i klimasaker og i nye saker som involverer ecocide-jus. CR vil utvikle forskningsmetoder for å utforske rollen til visuelle bevis, bildeskaping og digital teknologi i klimarettighetsdokumentasjon. Dette vil åpne nye muligheter for forskning innen humanistiske fagområder som visuell kultur, mediefag og miljøhumaniora, og innen samfunnsvitenskapelige fagområder som politisk økologi og kritisk rettsvitenskap.

To achieve climate neutrality, reducing emissions is essential for Norway and the rest of the world. Keeping oil in the ground and forests intact are key parts of that equation, as well as mitigation and adaptation efforts. Recently, a new wave of climate cases brought by civil society from both the global North and the South are seeking climate policy changes from the bottom up by claiming in national and international courts and tribunals that government policy and corporate activities, such as the sanctioning and extraction of fossil fuels and deforestation violates their fundamental human rights to a healthy environment and the rights of future generations. However, despite advances in legal theory and scientific research around attribution, the success of climate litigation cases is still rather low impeding climate action. 

The CLIMATE RIGHTS project draws upon architecture, environmental design, geospatial science, artistic research and international law to critically investigate the spaces of probative visibility in rights-based climate litigation, not only in technoscientific terms but also in their material and social dimensions. Using geospatial visualizations and modelling combined with participatory methods, this research will enable us to close the evidentiary gaps in climate cases by addressing critical questions around responsibility, causality and legibility of climate harm. 

Through case studies on rights-based climate litigation challenging extraterritorial emissions and deforestation in the frontlines of climate change, the project will demonstrate how visual-spatial research can transform the way environmental damage and climate harm is presented in legal processes and will propose ways of opening new imaginaries for climate rights in Norway and beyond.

CLIMATE RIGHTS: Designing Visual Evidence for Climate Cases

ACTIONABLE er et prosjekt som kombinerer flere fagfelt, samt kunnskap fra lokal- og urbefolkningssamfunn for å forstå bærekraftig forvaltning land og hav i kystområder.
Den første hovedideen i ACTIONABLE er at det å jobbe sammen i samarbeidsbaserte bærekraft-prosjekter som oppmuntrer lokal deltakelse kan bidra til bærekraftig forvaltning av natur og naturgoder. Men det å etablere samarbeid- og deltakelsesbaserte metoder for å forvalte natur og naturverdier på en bærekraftig måte kan være vanskelig fordi det er mange krav knyttet til enkelte steder, f.eks. langs kysten. Det er bevist at «runde bord»-organisasjoner, altså organisasjoner som fører sammen forskjellige aktører og sektorer, kan bidra til å navigere rundt og koble sammen uforenelige interesser, og på denne måten hjelpe til med bærekraftig kystforvaltning. 
Den andre hovedideen som undersøkes i dette prosjektet er at naturen dekker menneskers behov, velvære, kultur og identitet. Natur og kultur er sterkt sammenkoblet. Denne nære koblingen kan sammenfattes gjennom ordet “biokultur” – f.eks. hvordan fisk, kyst og fiske har formet identiteten til mennesker langs den norske og samiske kysten, og hvordan disse menneskene har formet havet. Ettersom ulik verdisetting og ulike bruksmåter kjemper om plass i et begrenset område, og konflikter om bruk av kystområder blir mer vanlig trenger vi en bedre forståelse for samvirke og avveininger mellom ulik naturbruk.
Vi er en prosjektgruppe bestående av forskere, samfunnsorganisasjoner og forretningsvirksomheter (UNESCO Chair for bærekraftig arv og miljø, Senter for bærekraftig arealbruk, LoVe utvikling, Nordhordland UNESCO biosfæreområde, SAMAS, SINTEF og University of Saskatchewan). Fra et akademisk perspektiv vil vi undersøke våre spørsmål med ulike natur- og samfunnsvitenskapelige forskningsmetoder, fra et «bakkenivå»-perspektiv vil vi jobbe med lokalbefolkning gjennom våre samfunnspartnere og konsultasjoner, men også gjennom kreative film- og kunstprosjekter.

ACTIONABLE works to translate global sustainability imperatives and policies to local and regional coastal and marine realities through a transdisciplinary approach that facilitates exchange and learning between local and global institutions and stakeholders. ACTIONABLE will consider the changing social-ecological outlook of biocultural diversity and ecosystem services in three coastal regions in Norway, addressing the role of collaborative platforms and bridging institutions as pathways to localize Agenda 2030 (UN 2015). ACTIONABLE’s partners work together to understand adaptive co-management of coast and sea as enabled by round table institutions and sustainability designations in the coastal and marine areas of Nordhordland UNESCO Biosphere, Lofoten UNESCO Biosphere Candidate and Sápmi Finnmark.  ACTIONABLE advances current understanding of adaptive co-management effectiveness to achieve regenerative and fair development, investigating its potential to manage ecosystem service trade-offs triggered by different coastal and marine area uses, navigating disparate stakeholder interests and values. ACTIONABLE actively addresses these issues from a social-ecological perspective, through a biocultural approach that considers the complex relationships between coastal biological and cultural diversity. ACTIONABLE takes an explicitly transdisciplinary approach with societal impact as a core pillar and vision, co-producing knowledge to generate policy-relevant and solution-oriented research that helps identify place-based approaches to coastal sustainability challenges sensitive to local cultural narratives and biocultural perspectives. ACTIONABLE promotes resilient ecosystem service management by drawing on Indigenous and local knowledge to disentangle complex social-ecological interdependencies. Co-developing a monitoring and evaluation framework ACTIONABLE will inform sustainable management practices that support coastal identities and biodiversity.
