Cross-Layer Optimization of Short-Range Wireless Sensor Networks

In this summary mainly the planned research of the Norwegian side is targeted. One important task will be the co-optimization of link adaptation schemes and node circuitry power consumption, for low-complexity energy-efficient transmission in short-rang e WSNs. The Finnish team will take the main responsibility for circuitry development and modeling, whereas the Norwegian team will exploit the resulting solutions to develop adaptive transmission schemes such that overall energy consumption is minimized. We foresee that link adaptation, if properly designed, will greatly decrease the total energy consumed in a sensor network. Modeling the joint power consumption of circuitry and transmission, and adding this to the overall power budget, we will formulate novel optimization problems which minimize network energy consumption while still fulfilling the given constraints. Specifically, adaptive transmission schemes for minimizing the overall consumed energy per transmitted bit shall be developed. The optimiza tion will be done based on a detailed dynamic power consumption model. Furthermore, QoS constraints such as demands on minimum throughput, minimum acceptable quality of received signals, maximum allowed latency, maximum allowed outage etc. will be taken i nto account when optimizing the adaptive schemes. Both coded and uncoded solutions will be studied. Another topic is efficient radio resource allocation and exploitation in short-range wireless sensor networks by means of opportunistic or cooperative tra nsmissions, under various QoS constraints. The Norwegian part of the work will concentrate on: opportunistic and cooperative multi-user scheduling, routing/relaying strategies, and joint multi-user detection and decoding algorithms. A final topic is mult i-user adaptive joint source-channel coding techniques for energy-efficient low-complexity transmission of analog sensor data in short-range WSNs with latency constraints and multi-hop possibilities.
