Progressive, modern production of juvenile Atlantic cod

Awarded: NOK 9.1 mill.

High throughput, reduced generation time, rapid development, high energy diets, intensive feeding scheme (rotifers), high densities, heated water and photoperiod control, with constant light to enhance growth and accelerate development, are becoming key r equirements for successful season-independent intensive Atlantic cod juvenile production. An effective exploitation of intensive land-based production facilities calls for detailed knowledge on the impact of key rearing factors on fundamental production c haracteristics such as growth performance, food conversion efficiency, definition of quality parameters, optimal live feed production, efficient logistics and fish welfare. The proposed project will therefore focus on these key parameters. The overall obj ective is to optimise production of juvenile cod applying a multidisciplinary approach to solve central bottlenecks related to juvenile quality, rotifer quality, water quality and fish welfare under intensive production. The project will focus on challeng es related to commercial scale production of larval and juvenile cod and will integrate, biological, water chemical, logistical and technological challenges where the overall aim is propose solutions for the problems addressed in the project. It is inten ded to carry out a series of production experiments in small scale as well as under conditions similar to those in modern production of juvenile Atlantic cod. Laboratory experiments will be applied to study interactions between chosen factors as an effect ive way of clarifying interactive effects. Large scale studies will be performed at Marine Harvest production facility at Smøla and at SagaFjord SeaFarm production facility at Stord, with emphasis on studying chosen production parameters under realistic d ensities and in real scale. Real-life transport studies will be performed using truck and well-boat in cooperation with industrial partners J. Tveiten Transport and Rostein AS.
