Planning and Organisation for improved Public Health (POPHEALTH)

Preventive public health (PPH) aims at reducing causes of health risks while strengthening the conditions contributing to improved better health. PPH implies efforts to improve health by influencing individual life styles as well as the general conditions of life facilitated by the physical environment. PPH also involves making efforts to improve psychical health by facilitating mastering and personal experiences, a positive self-conception, confidence, human dignity and respect. The public planning syste m can be developed as a strategic instrument to promote for public health policies, provided such polices are firmly anchored in the political and administrative leadership in municipal and county councils. The central research themes can be summarised u nder three main headlines: * To define causal relations between significant issues of public health and socioeconomic, cultural, political and environmental driving forces. Causal knowledge is needed to link public health problems, challenges and policie s to the tools, approaches and participatory procedures offered by the planning system to help promote public health visions * to produce knowledge on the characteristics of the institutional and organisational framework and the major actors in the publi c health sector. Such knowledge is needed to analyse and evaluate the ability, competence and capacity of different organisations - public as well as third sector organisations - to fully engage in the various substantive and procedural dimensions of plan ning * to improve knowledge on the implementation, impacts and consequences of public health policy measures, reforms and pilot projects aiming at the full integration of public health as a vital issue in public planning at all levels. Within each are a state-of-the-art documentation will be produced as a basis for theoretical and empirical studies to be defined in the subsequent years. An international network and arenas for dialoge will be established
