Processes of change in urban environments: cultural heritage, urban development and regionalisme

Awarded: NOK 13.0 mill.

The developmental growth of cities and towns in the past 20 to 25 years has become both the object of continual social focus and a multidisciplinary and sector-comprehensive political field. It is of vital importance that cultural heritage is analysed and included as assets and resources for the development of viable and sustainable cities, towns and villages. In order to fulfil this, knowledge about cultural heritage and its role in urban developmental processes must be intensified and expanded. The basi s of knowledge must be strengthened and implemented into the processes of planning and decision-making. Methods for such impartation of knowledge and for the follow-up of results must be developed. The strategic programme is based on the necessity that h as been revealed for identifying the driving forces and processes of change facing present-day urban environments. In order to strengthen NIKUs ability to provide specialised input concerning the challenges that confront the cultural heritage management s ector, three programme areas have been formulated towards which research efforts will be directed: - The transformation of urban areas and older urban structures will provide increased knowledge about the consequences that the intensification of change have for the cultural heritage in urban environments. - The role of the cultural heritage sector as producers of ideology, value and identity will look more closely at how this sector participate as actors in urban planning processes. - Integrated manage ment of cultural heritage in urban environments will stress the importance of methodological development. The programme is formulated as a five-year programme and includes commitments as to scientific publication by all participants. It will extend the multidisciplinary collaboration that already exists in NIKU, while also emphasising researchers obligations for cooperating with other relevant institutes and partaking in international research networks.
