Young people, Television and New media: Interactivity and Aesthetics in Cross-media Productions - application for outbound mobility grant

Awarded: NOK 0.24 mill.

In my PhD-project, titled "Interactivity and aesthetics in cross-media productions", I study how television for children and youth is influenced by media convergence and the subsequent divergence. The research questions are; (1) how are different media us ed in cross-media productions, (2) how do the aesthetics, including design for interaction, develop and (3) how do young people respond. The project is included in the umbrella project "Television in Digital Environments" (TiDE), at the Faculty of Televis ion Production and Film Studies, Lillehammer University College, which aim is to analyse the consequences of digitalization, convergence and new media for television. The project is funded by The Research Council of Norway. I have been invited to become a Visiting Scholar at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and a stay would be of high value to my research. Summing up, the scientific purpose and value added of a stay at UCSB is to: Do theoretical studies of relevance to my research questi ons, and make use of the highly qualified professionals and research projects at UCSB. Follow relevant courses and seminars in film, television and new media theory, media history and textual analysis. Do empirical research, including a comparative case s tudy of an American and a Norwegian cross-media production (which is of high value for the research project because while television is by far the leading media among youngsters in Norway, Internet has become more popular than television among young adult s in the United States). UCSB has also funded a Centre for Film, Television and New Media, which is very interesting for my interdisciplinary project. I will also have unlimited access to their library resources. As a Visiting Scholar I have a unique oppo rtunity to make connections and build network that hopefully also will result in future collaboration between UCSB and Lillehammer University College.
