Oxide nanomaterials - phenomena and applications; focus on basic understanding of semiconductor components for hydrogen production by PEC

Awarded: NOK 3.6 mill.

Center for materials science and nanotechnology (SMN) at the UiO aims to establish a genuinely interdisciplinary program within the general field of oxide nanomaterials, having focus on understanding of materials and phenomena required to develop photoele ctrochemical (PEC) water splitting cells that, on a long-term, may become the ultimate technological solution for ?clean? hydrogen production. SMN holds a unique position providing interdisciplinary competence at a high international level, specifically a t the interface between chemistry and physics, to launch a complete, comprehensive study on PEC splitting of water. Strong interaction is foreseen between the following fields of expertise: semiconductor physics; photovoltaics; electronic structure calcu lations; nanoparticle and thin film growths; catalysis; metal-organic chemistry. The activity will also give SMN/UiO significant advantageous even on the international arena. Since the requested budget for the SUP is limited a particular effort is made to provide strong synergy between the specific objectives in the present SUP and a number of ongoing projects at SMN/UiO funded from other sources.
