During the last decade, the use of mobile telephones has increased dramatically in large parts of the world. It has been hypothesized, that children should be more vulnerable to radio frequency electromagnetic field exposures from mobile telephones than a dults, but no epidemiological studies of the relationship have as yet been performed. In some countries, it is advised that children and teenagers restrict their use of mobile phones while in other countries this recommendation is not regarded necessary. The lack of knowledge causes conflicting recommendations from decision-makers, leading to anxiety and insecurity in the population. The possible health effects, discussed by the public, include the increased risk of developing brain tumours. This is why we wish to establish a Nordic case-control study of the association between the use of mobile telephones and the risk of brain tumours among children aged 7-19 years. In Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, cases and control persons will be i dentified through a combination of registry data and information from the wards treating the patients. The responsible Scandinavian PI?s have earlier participated in several Nordic scientific collaborations regarding exposures to electromagnetic fields an d risk for cancer. As a part of the Interphone study, they have established an extended collaboration with neurosurgical clinics in their respective country. During a two-year period, all incident cases of brain tumour in this age group will be identifie d through a close collaboration with the clinics treating this type of malignancies. In addition to this, cases diagnosed up to two years prior to the date of start of study, will be included retrospectively, irrespective of vital status of the date of ac tual recruitment. In total, the study will include 645 cases of brain tumours in the participating countries. For each case, two control persons will be randomly selected from the general population, matched on
