VOC Emissions Reduction from Transport of Petroleum

Awarded: NOK 0.77 mill.

Recovery of VOC emissions from the cargo tanks of a ship requires an active recovery system that is large, complicated and expensive. On the other hand, reducing the release of VOC from the cargo can be achieved by passive design features and optimised lo ading procedures. The use of passive design features is attractive because it requires no maintenance and is always available, while optimised loading procedures is a low cost measure that can be implemented on most ships. Some procedures and passive de sign features for VOC reduction have been developed. One notable example is the optimised drop line called KVOC developed by Knutsen OAS. However; although experts agree that emissions will be reduced by optimised handling and design, there is still muc h to be done in part of: 1. developing procedures for low VOC emissions and evaluate safety implications 2. developing passive design features to limit VOC release 3. developing new technological solutions to limit VOC release 4. quantifying effect s of the above measures This project aims to adress the above points in a three stage proces: 1: Fundamental research Improve fundemental understanding by analysis of emission data, making new experiments and implementing new capabilities into a VOC si mulation model 2: Concept development: Using the improved fundamental understanding and simulation model to evaluate procedures, passive features and active means to reduce VOC release such as alternative blanket gas technology. The concepts will be eva luated in contecxt with realistic scenaros that take changes in oil production into account 3: Validation The results will be thoroughly validated to document the efficiency of the designs and procedures and to ensure that they may be used without compro mising safety.
