Design and Production of Planar SOFCs from Nanoparticles with Emphasis on Support and Sealing

Awarded: NOK 2.8 mill.

Project Manager:

Project Number:

176214

Project Period:

2006 - 2011

NANOSOFC will aim to manufacture and test a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) from nanoparticles, which were developed in an earlier project: MSOFC. Two urgent SOFC technology issues will also be addressed: support and sealing for planar cells. Two new nanopar ticle products were developed in MSOFC, both based on a sol-gel process using new (patented) organic precursors: 1) YSZ nanoparticles of control-lable size, and 2) separate NiO and YSZ nanoparticles produced in one single sol-gel process. In NANOSOFC, the se particles will be raw materials for anode-supported cells. Supports resistant to unavoidable chemical environment and thermal disturbances will be designed, and the perennial problem of sealing planar cells will be addressed. The project will result in a new, efficient and stable, marketable fuel cell type and in valuable know-how for the Norwegian energy industry, helping to establish Norway in the forefront of this energy efficient and environmentally friendly technology.
