Materials for sensor and imaging applications

Awarded: NOK 6.0 mill.

The objective of the SUP is to establish UiO as an internationally leading institution with respect to research and development of sensor and imaging materials for selected applications. The project aims at integrating strong experimental and theoretical activities in chemistry, physics, materials-, micro- and nanotechnology. The proposed two main activities concentrate on respectively gas sensor materials and thermal imaging materials. In these two areas UiO has already demonstrated state-of-the-art resu lts. We will benefit from our strongholds in materials and thin film synthesis, semiconductor physics, mesoscopic physics, and polymer science, and thereby develop novel materials and concepts for gas sensing and thermal imaging, for the latter with objec tive to push present limits for resolution with orders of magnitude. In addition three subprojects (platforms) of generic importance are defined. These aim at providing a broad competence basis in materials of importance for future sensor and imaging syst ems. They concentrate on electroactive oxide nanoparticles, polymer materials and functional thin films. Resources for the latter sub-projects will to a large extent be financed outside this SUP. The SUP represents a genuine crossdisciplinary effort at Ui O. In this way the project holds and unifies competence in chemistry, physics, microtechnology, nanotechnology - experiment and theory.
