Functional genomics of phenotypic plasticity of cod: a national consortium.

Awarded: NOK 9.0 mill.

Project Number:

177034

Application Type:

Project Period:

2007 - 2012

Location:

Subject Fields:

The proposed project is submitted by the University of Oslo as such (through its rector) on behalf of the other members in the consortium consisting of strong basic research groups with a strong and long experience within the fields of genomics, ecology a nd evolutionary biology. Although we represent basic science we also have a strong tradition for performing applied research. Some of the participants have experience from commercialization and establishment of biotechnology companies. The main biological theme addressed is the functional genomics of phenotypic plasticity in Atlantic cod (i.e., the biological repertoire of responses to environmental variability, such as salinity, pollution, food availability or harvest regime). The project is developed ar ound three work packages being composed of a series of highly integrated sub-projects (tasks) and a set of resources. These resources include genomic sequencing (low-coverage) of cod, EST libraries and microarrays and stock assessment tools (cod, mitogen omic database). Together, this should boost functional genomics research on fish in Norway, as well put our country on the map internationally. The coordinating research group - the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) - houses scientis ts working on both ecological and molecular genetics, separately as well as within close interdisciplinary teams. As such the coordinating research group as well as the entire consortium represents a unique constellation of scientific expertise. The other groups represent core functional genomics at UiB (The Sars Centre), AKVAFORSK and the Norwegian Veterinary College. If successful, additional support will be allocated to these groups.
