BIGCO2 Phase II. CO2 Management Technologies for Future Power Generation.

Awarded: NOK 80.5 mill.

The proposal represents the second phase of a knowledge building project (KMB), "BIGCO2. CO2 Management Technologies for Future Power Generation". It is a continuation of the first phase (2005-2006). The project is organized in eight specific tasks: Ta sk A: High temperature oxygen and hydrogen membranes: fabrication and sealing technology for planar and tubular ceramic membranes, and the use of the technology for production of membrane modules. Task B: Post-combustion CO2 capture: Absorption processe s and working media, as well as the environmental impact of amine-based absorption and related solvents used in post-combustion capture cycles Task C: Pressurised combustion of enriched fuels: Fundamentals of hydrogen and oxy-fuel combustion, design and validation of hydrogen and oxy-fuel combustors and their integration in gas turbine engines. Task D: Power cycle integration: Gas-fired power plants with CO2 capture and their ability to reach the targets of BIGCO2, evaluation of novel capture technolog ies and candidate power cycles with capture against technical, economic and environmental criteria Task E: CO2 chain analyses: Definition of the relevant CO2 chain(s), their main elements and the evaluation methodology in technical, economic and environm ental terms aiming at realistic scenario analyses of the entire chain. Task F: Enhanced oil and gas recovery with CO2 and safe storage of CO2: Evaluation of CO2 storage as a safe, economic and large-scale reduction option. Several knowledge areas are req uired, from geology and chemistry to economics, law and politics. Task G: Chemical-looping combustion: Development of 2nd and 3rd generation versions of a novel CLC reactor and structured oxygen carrier materials resulting in novel processes for power cy cles with CO2 capture. Task G is transferred to BIGCLC (176059) Task H: Academia. This task aggregates all academic actions linked with formal Ph.D. theses and post-doctoral fellowship
