To ensure the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) they are subjected to risk assessment prior to release into the environment and use in e.g. food production. Such known GMOs are considered to be as safe as conventional varieties. GMOs for whi ch publicly available descriptions are unavailable may be classified as unknown GMOs, and are per definition non-authorised. Lack of appropriate risk assessment implies that unknown GMOs pose a considerably higher risk to health and environment than known GMOs. This project will develop a novel approach, based on high-density microarrays and innovative probe design for detection of unknown GMOs in selected plant, bacterial and fungi species.
