The project consists of three main types of activities: - Execution of field experiments in Svalbard - Joint analysis of data from Svalbard and elsewhere - Exchange of researchers and graduate students There will be two field seasons, winter/spring 2007 and winter/spring 2008. The main experimental technique will be to use turbulence instrument clusters (TIC) suspended from the ice, in combination with other ocean and ice measurements. TIC techniques have been pioneered by Miles McPhee and provided much of the data base for what is presently known about turbulent ice-ocean interaction. Existing instrumentation will be upgraded and used. While the data base is sparse, and experimental techniques have evolved over the years, the availability of comparabl e data sets from different environments provides opportunities for comparison and putting measurements in context. Also recent data from Antarctica may be useful, particularly since the sea ice cover in Antarctica may resemble a future Arctic ice cover. T he Norwegian collaborators have various ancillary ocean and sea ice data which need to be combined with the TIC data from the same experimental areas to address scientific goals in joint analyses. Starting out with new M.Sc. and PhD students during the A IO project, the combined UNIS, GFI, Bjerknes group now includes several PostDocs and recruits who can contribute significantly to research on a high international level. In order to enable the further development of this potential, travel, exchanges and e xposure to US colleagues and international meetings is planned.
