MATPROG-Matprogrammet: Norsk mat fra sjø og land

Novel nutritonal products for improved metabolic health.

Awarded: NOK 2.7 mill.

Project Manager:

Project Number:

179440

Project Period:

2007 - 2010

Location:

The importance of nutrition for metabolic health has been the subject of a growing interest both from the scientific community and the public in recent years. Obesity and obesity-related disorders, often referred to as the metabolic syndrome, is a serious condition with the presence of a number of risk factors like overweight, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and insulin resistance/type II diabetes. On this background there is obviously a need for more focused research into the possible role of dietary chang e in combating this increase in lifestyle related diseases. This dietary change may be facilitated by the development of novel nutritional ingredients and products which have improved beneficial effects on human health. This is the rationale behind the development of functional food. Recent scientific work focuses on the proteins and water soluble components as important components for human health and recently the cholesterol lowering effect of hydrolyzed fish protein has been demonstrated. It is kno wn that a range of lipid mediators are able to improve dyslipidemic states and to modulate the inflammatory response. In this respect, the objective of this project is to identify bioactive compounds of marine origin. Such data will contribute to lay t he foundation for preparing functional food and feed products, and thereby to increase the value of marine resources by developing large scale separation and purification of bioactive compounds.
