Maritime Emission Mitigation

Awarded: NOK 2.1 mill.

Global warming, acidification and air pollution are environmental problems which are high on the international agenda. World shipping transports almost 2/3 of world global trade and although the contribution to global anthropogenic NOx and SO2 emissions a re significant, ship emissions have not previously been regulated. As a consequence of this a regulatory focus is now on shipping, since strict regulations for the land based sectors have reduced those emissions significantly. The objective of this proj ect is to assess the effect(s) of different innovative strategies to reduce ship air emissions and related environmental impacts generated by transportation of gods and passenger at sea. The mitigation strategies will be results of an evaluation taking in to account performance changes (reduced emissions, atmospheric changes and impacts) compared to costs (investment, operational and environmental) as well as potential benefit from fuel saving and trading of emissions etc. The proposed reduction strategies will include a portfolio of different reduction options and combinations of these. The portfolio will be simulated installed in ships/fleets operating the next 25 years only within Norwegian waters, in Arctic waters and on global scale. The different fut ure reduction scenarios will then be assumed to represent alternative options for emission reductions up to 2025, and will be compared against each other, and against the business as usual scenario. A policy maker future scenario will be based on a scenar io where implementation of the emission reduction portfolio within some regions and on global scale is included. This scenario will take into account growth in shipping activity and regime changes. A web based decision support system embedding technologi cal and economic state-of-the-art knowledge for various vessel emission mitigating options will be developed, allowing for cost optimum investment and operations decision by vessel operators and owners.
