Kina - Bilateral cooperation on fish pathogens and antigen characterisation

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

Shandong province, China, more than 65 000 tons flat fish is produced per year. The production is estimated to grow to 200 000 tons/yr within a timeframe of 5 - 10 years. Bacterial diseases cause losses in flatfish farming. A long list of bacteria has bee n isolated, including vibriosis. The project aim is to develop, document and license vaccine(s) against particular diseases in flatfish that cause problems for the industry in Shandong Province. The specific cause(s) of the diseases need to be confirmed, the antigens need to be identified/ characterized, and attention has to be given to identifying and characterizing protective antigens. Clinical tools are needed (challenge and immunological methods) for evaluation of the efficacy of the vaccines. The vac cines will thereafter be documented and licensed, and implemented in the region. The entire project period, post establishment, is estimated to 5 years.
