IPY-Det internasjonale polaråret 2007/2008

IPY Overview

Awarded: NOK 1.3 mill.

The IPY Overview will present research from the International Polar Year as an overview. The process in which the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) presented their overview in 2004 will serve as a model and template for the process and the IPY Ove rview. The overall goal is to compile research results and findings from Norwegian IPY projects on climate change and present them in a holistic manner in order to make them more accessible to a broader public. The European Arctic will be the main focus for the IPY Overview, but research results from other parts of the Arctic and from other research programmes than IPY will be included when necessary to achieve the overall goal of the IPY Overview. The IPY Overview will also include climate change in th e Antarctica, but not as broad and detailed as for the Arctic. A team of selected IPY project participants will act as an editorial board or integration team who will supervise the writing process. A science writer will be engaged to write the text. The editorial board will be responsible for collecting and integrating the scientific findings and communicate these findings in a dialogue with the science writer. The IPY Overview will provide detailed information on the Norwegian IPY projects. Still, the idea is to present climate research in a way that makes it easy to communicate with a broader public. This requires both a skilled science writer who supervises and edits the writing process - and the presentation of good photos and graphics. Target grou p for the final product will be the interested and informed public with a certain background. The Overview will be excellent for educational purposes and background information for media people. The IPY Overview will be written and printed in English. If funds are available the IPY Overview will be translated into Norwegian.
