Project Number:

Application Type:

Project Period:

2007 - 2008

Subject Fields:

Biobanking, i.e. storage of biological samples or data emerging from such samples for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes, has been going on for decades in many European countries and elsewhere. However, it is only since the mid 1990s that these activities have become the subject of considerable public attention, concern and debate. The aim of the present proposal is firstly to realise the publication of a book on the ethics of research biobanking requested by Springer Verlag. What makes this w ork distinctive from previous studies is its analogical approach (see description below). Besides, it represents the first attempt at giving a content full account of the particular ethical, legal and social challenges raised by research biobanking. Furth ermore, it aims at clarifying the institutional nature of research biobanks. The second aim is to provide a report on the original project on research biobanking, i.e a report aimed at informing the general public in a comprehensive and transparent way about the institutional nature of research biobanking and the ethical, legal and social challenges raised by research biobanking.
