LPD - Lean Product Development

Awarded: NOK 11.6 mill.

The manufacturing industry in Norway as well as Europe is facing increased pressure to reduce manufacturing costs. Automation along with advanced manufacturing systems and lean manufacturing concepts has to some extent preserved Europe as a key area for m anufacturing. Manufacturing cost cutting, however, is not enough, Europe must also intensify the development of sustainable, innovative, high value added products. This calls for research on how to develop the right new products effectively in a competit ive and global market place. A key in this connection is to establish product development tools, systems and working modes - applicable to people with different functions and at different levels in the organization - improving the value added productivity from all resources involved in taking a new product from idea to market distribution. Investments in new products should be made on those products with the highest potential in a Product Life Management (PLM) perspective based on technology, knowledge, r esources, marked, profit potential and business environment. However, such practical methods - involving tools and systems applicable to different parts of an organisation, making the development process of high added value products more effective - are n ot presently available. This KMB will establish new knowledge and develop new tools and methods to support product development. The KMB will develop and establish new metrics for productivity in product development as well as methods for use of existing manufacturing and product data in product development. New simulation tools will be established. The research will focus on the following tasks: 1. Performance metrics in product development 2. Data collection and re-use of product and manufacturing da ta 3. New holistic models of Product development 4. Methods for effective product development 5. Decision making support tools There will be 2 PhD scholarships in the project
